I have only watched one or two of these but I think DS1 would enjoy them. He is 14 and loves horror, fantasy and dark comedy. He has a strong stomach for gore and general creepiness.

However he has zero tolerance for any sexual references and I know some episodes refer to sex / abuse / incest which he would not be ok with!

Can any fans recommend an episode or two that might be suitable for him?

THIS is a good overview of the episodes. I really like

A Quiet Night In
Twelve Days Of Christine
Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room
Nana's Party
Private View
The Bill
The Riddle of the Sphinx
Diddle Diddle Dumpling
Tempting Fate

Buttercup72 · 10/08/2021 23:12

Twelve days of Christine is the best bit of telly I’ve ever watched.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 10/08/2021 23:20

The riddle of the Sphinx is your best starting point.

How do you plead
Tom and Geri
Tempting fate
The stakeout
Simon says

Twelve days of Christine is the best 30 minutes of telly ever made. I don't think any of them have overt sex? Not really their style

BraveBananaBadge · 10/08/2021 23:26

It really is up there, Buttercup. I've only ever watched it once and still tear up when I remember it. It's really unforgettable.

Wasn't there an episode based around Hitchcock's Rope? Maybe the Crackers and Cheese ep, or the one with the guys trying to rob the house? This is useless, obv as I can't remember the names Hmm

Riddle of the Sphinx is very unsettling, might have a bit of a father/ daughter thing that might be an issue you describe iirc?

The Christmas Krampus episode still gives me the creeps good style and will forevermore!

KingofQueens · 11/08/2021 01:30

Riddle of the Sphinx definitely has shades of incest. It doesn't sound like a good one for him.

MegBusset · 11/08/2021 07:19

Yeah not just actual sex, but sexual undertones / references make him very uncomfortable.

Twelve Days of Christine was so good but I can't watch it again it was so upsetting

WorriedmumNo1 · 11/08/2021 22:48

Christmas Krampus has overt sex, Riddle of the Sphinx is a bit incesty, Referee’s a Wanker has loads of sex references, Thinking Out Loud is abuse themed… I’m sure there are a few more he would feel uncomfortable about.

But! Loads of episodes that would be suitable and are also gory/great:

The Harrowing
Seance Time
The Trial of Elizabeth Gadge
Once Removed
La Couchette

Are some of my favourites that are also fairly gruesome. Happy watching (mwahahaha)

WorriedmumNo1 · 11/08/2021 22:52

Tbh there’s quite often a little pun or gag about sex in each episode, Reece and Steve do like the occasional end-of-pier style double entendre. Some of it may go over his head; the ones I’ve suggested don’t have long conversations about sex or have anything like that as an overarching theme, but there might be the odd blue gag.

FireandBrimstone · 11/08/2021 22:56

Adding in a wee nod to the first episode of the latest season.- Wuthering Heist. So clever.

Quiet Night In, as already recommended, is an absolute masterpiece.

FireandBrimstone · 11/08/2021 23:00

Incidentally something else that might make watching a few episodes interesting - they always have the same statue of a hare, somewhere in every episode. I only discovered this latterly when listening to the Inside Inside Number 9 podcasts. But I'm tempted to watch every episode again just to hare-spot.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 11/08/2021 23:24

The Devil of Christmas (Krampus) is probably the only overt one you should definitely avoid - which is a shame as it is very good. The Referee’s a Wanker you might wish to swerve too.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 11/08/2021 23:35

Inside No.9 is what television was made for, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith are utter geniuses. ALL of the episodes, without exception, are masterpieces but some are just beyond sublime. A Quiet Night In, The Twelve Days of Christine, Cold Comfort, Diddlers Diddle Dumpling, Zanzibar, Once Removed and Simon Says are probably the best. I particularly love Death be Not Proud as it references their previous series Psychoville (another bloody good watch) and is hilarious.

BraveBananaBadge · 11/08/2021 23:48

It is fantastic isn't it. Saying that I haven't even watched the latest series! Sometimes episodes affect me so much it such a long time before I can even face tuning in again at all - I didn't dare try the live ep.

You never know what you're going to get, and that's the joy of it - but you know it will be a cast and crew at the absolute top of their game. As I said above Twelve Days of Christine will never leave me - in just 30 minutes of storytelling. TV at its absolute best.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 12/08/2021 21:07

i rewatched part of an excellent Inside no 9

Once Removed.
