Is anybody else going to give this a go tonight?

Me.

butterpuffed · 18/07/2021 20:32

Yes, me too, Ben Miller's given a couple of interviews and it sounds promising.

Chrysanthemum5 · 18/07/2021 21:07

Watching it now

SunSeaSurfGin · 18/07/2021 22:05

I really liked that. Will watch again

Clawdy · 18/07/2021 22:30

Got it recorded as it clashed with Baptiste and Handmaid's Tale!

OytheBumbler · 18/07/2021 22:34

I enjoyed it too.

I'll have to catch up on Handmaids tale tomorrow.

Mollypolly2610 · 18/07/2021 22:57

It wasn’t great but will watch again

PerhapsCarriageGreen · 18/07/2021 22:59

It really unsettled me for some reason. I think I'll watch it again though. It did make me want to visit Cambridge though!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 18/07/2021 23:08

I'll watch again, although I'm hoping the next one is a brighter in terms of the lighting! The first one always has to set the scene a bit as well I suppose, which affects the pacing a bit.

I'm waiting for somebody to pop up online saying "you shouldn't keep a goldfish in a bowl like that".

I thought it was dreadful no character explanation jutted about all over the place and they kept on leaving that poor girl who was raped alone! Will probably watch again to see how it goes, Alan Cummings was in a similar American programme called institute equally dreadful 😳

Mrsjayy · 18/07/2021 23:31

was called instinct!

SCMocha · 19/07/2021 09:19

I watched it too. Not sure about it. It all seemed to end very quickly with the professor just telling them the right things that happened to match their suspect, no real detective work or police procedural or anything, so I found it a little dull in that sense.

Lots of fairly random things that were supposed to tell you that characters had history (professor T and Christina?) but not then developed (maybe this will come in future series) as well as some really exaggerated characterisation (i.e., his mum). I didn't think Dankers (?) really showed herself to be an intellectual equal of the professor, even though that's what some of the reviews/trailers had said.

I liked the scenery and views, but it always annoys me slightly that lectures are always shown like theatrical performances (in Morse too) and the college/university life is so made-up, yet people then believe that's how it really is.

I'll watch next week's and see how it goes.

flapjackfairy · 19/07/2021 09:40

It is the usual formula isnt it ? Brilliant man ( usually ) but full of inner demons that result in OCD and rude behaviour to all and sundry.
There wasnt much in terms of challenge in the case solving though so a bit like murder in paradise ( Ben Miller playing the same character basically in that as well ) but without the sunshine and scantily clad female detective.
Plenty of stereotypes for the American market. The UK is always portrayed as being full of eccentric old people ( His mother ) and most people live and work in old mansion houses or chocolate box villages and are insanely wealthy Americans must get a right shock if they ever visit here ,!
But I enjoyed it for what it was and will.watch again .

LotLessBovver · 19/07/2021 19:44

The original Belgian series was brilliant. Koen de Bouw was fantastic as Professor T, and the cases were often as complex as Jasper Teerlinck himself. If it's still on 'Walter Presents' I would really recommend giving it a go.

The Ben Miller version was dire. It was like a very watered down version of the original. The whole point is supposed to be that the Professor sees everything in a different way to most people, and combines that with his knowledge to help to solve cases - not attempt some dodgy version of hypnotism. Confused

Xmasbaby11 · 19/07/2021 19:46

I watched the first episode of the Belgian one and hated it! So I don't feel tempted to try this one.

SeasonFinale · 19/07/2021 19:54

The Belgian one gets better. Are they the same cases because of so I won't bother with the Brit version

midsomermurderess · 19/07/2021 21:37

I really liked the Belgian one too. It's a bit reductive to say the UK one has been made for the US market when it is so faithfully based on the original, together with occasional surreal interludes.

ShanghaiDiva · 19/07/2021 22:51

Absolutely dire: caricatures rather than characters and a plot so basic it reminded me of Jessica Fletcher and Murder she wrote. Watch out everyone: the big clue has just been revealed.

Rhannion · 24/07/2021 11:25

Absolutely awful , the storyline, the casting, the whole tone of it was just appalling.

Rhannion · 24/07/2021 11:27

What a mess of a programme. Shouldn’t have ever made it to the screen.

Clawdy · 24/07/2021 11:34

Didn't like the juxtaposition of dreadful rape scenes, then quirky, almost comedic moments. Won't be watching again.

mum2jakie · 25/07/2021 20:33

Hmm. Was a bit odd. Surely they would have had DNA evidence from the rapes so his confession wouldn't have been needed anyway? Was a bit of an anti climax when the killer was revealed. The ending and subject matter was a bit grim though. Think I'd give the next episode a go and see if it improves.

SCMocha · 25/07/2021 21:28

Even more odd this week.

It's hard to figure out what time it's meant to be set in. They have mobile phones, but the students aren't using laptops etc which they would be.

The hospital looks like it's decades old but yet doors are opened with key cards and fobs.

They are imessaging and yet don't seem to have dna technology.

And the weird reflection thing in the corner of his office is creepy. Or maybe I just don't know what it's meant to be.

Just all strange combinations of things in the whole show. But not quirky in a good way somehow.

Christinayangtwistedsister · 25/07/2021 21:48

It feels like a poor mans Sherlock

CheerfulBunny · 25/07/2021 21:52

Precisely @Christinayangtwistedsister There's just nothing to it. It's weirdly empty, there's no complexity.
