Have any of you watched it, and what do you think ?

OP posts:
Mountaingoatling · 06/07/2021 10:39

I also think the sightings are very relevant. This was a highly distinctive person spotted twice afterwards once very locally and then in the next town along.

AdoptedBumpkin · 06/07/2021 10:40

I saw it, something not quite right about the Dad in particular.

Mountaingoatling · 06/07/2021 10:44

I didn't find the Dad odd. I'm from that part of the world and honestly he reminds me of my uncle, who is a character but not as far as I know capable of hurting a fly.

I'm sure I'd seem very odd if bereaved and accused of murder.

But who knows...

Hotcuppatea · 06/07/2021 10:44

I thought they were innocent too. People reacting differently to ourselves or being more emotionally restrained doesn't make them murderers.

Tlollj · 06/07/2021 10:49

But where is he? People do not just vanish. It might not be unbelievable that he walked home from the toilets on his own but I can’t believe the mum didn’t check.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 06/07/2021 10:51

I think the sightings are relevant too.

MissMissTorrance · 06/07/2021 10:59

I don't believe the toilet block was actually that close to their home.
Another thing that struck me was near the end of the tv show the Dad said something about them just wanting to know where he was and to bring him home but stated it was no longer important if he was dead or alive. Something like that.

Mountaingoatling · 06/07/2021 10:59

@Tlollj I wonder if he might be being kept as slave labour. The reason this crossed my mind was a recent Channel 4 show where a man had gone missing for years. It was a murder investigation.

He had escaped his captors but then hid for years in the woods as was so traumatised.

Obviously the police are hardly calling out for my Miss Marple skills but I think he walked off. I think there was a disagreement. I think he then was or is held against his will.

Slave labour stories are in the news every week and are more often men and usually vulnerable men.

Soubriquet · 06/07/2021 10:59

Where can I watch this? It sounds interesting

MissMissTorrance · 06/07/2021 11:05

I also think the Dad bribed the pal from the pub to say he had seen him in Redcar.
Dad, if a police officer, will have had social standing in this community and I believe his drinking pals would have gone out of their way to please him and do what he asked.
When things became investigated further this pal got cold feet and changed his story and admitted to his wife he hadn't even spoken to Stephen despite earlier in the police investigation telling them he'd had a conversation with him.

Crimeismymiddlename · 06/07/2021 11:19

I think the parents are lying. There was ether an accident at home after they got back and they covered it up-I have had the impression that his difficulties made him hard to live with and it is possible things went to far and they used the trip to town as a cover or by the loos they had a row and he went on his own volition but the parents had reasons to say he just disappeared. They had something to do with it and they know far more than what they are saying.

Tlollj · 06/07/2021 11:48

Had an argument and walked off sounds plausible. Or mum walked off and left him somewhere after an argument.
But I assumed the family were quite well known in the area and someone would have seen him or her.

Celandines · 06/07/2021 11:50

@Soubriquet

Where can I watch this? It sounds interesting
It's on itv hub
DinaofCloud9 · 06/07/2021 11:54

I believed them and I didn't find them cold at all.

Pinot4evs · 06/07/2021 12:03

I think I believe them too. I think a maybe they had a row, he stormed off, didn’t go home hence the sightings and then came to harm, maybe of his own intention.

Tlollj · 06/07/2021 12:06

That makes sense @Pinot4evs but where’s his body?

jay55 · 06/07/2021 12:21

Someone I was at school with was murdered, but his body wasn't identified for 15 years. It had been found(other end of the country), but the police didn't know who it was until they were tested the dna of old cases.

Sometimes the dots are not joined up for a long time.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 06/07/2021 12:23

I think the parents are slightly odd but that doesn't mean they killed him.

I think he was seen by someone near his home after walking back from the toilets on his own - that made the witness suspect his parents had something to do with his disappearance.

He was starting to gain confidence and be more independent. He was dating someone and socialised at a local pub. He was disabled but with only mild learning difficulties. He walked with a limp but was able to walk fairly well. His arm was more damaged. He was in a coma for a month after his accident at 2 years old.

He had a £1000 award for doing well with an apprenticeship which he didn't collect. He didn't take his wallet - so I never believed he left home voluntarily.

His father supposedly argued with him about wanting him to pay for his own football ticket on the day he disappeared. There are questions about why he was suddenly being asked to pay for himself but he would have had money from his benefits. He didn't go to the match with his father because he didn't want to pay for his own ticket. I wonder if he finally decided to pay for it himself and tried to get to the match on his own. He disappeared at 3 which is when the match started. The match would have ended around 5.

The sister got the date he supposedly went missing wrong. I think he disappeared the day before after a family argument. I think they may have delayed reporting he was missing.

Mydogisagentleman · 06/07/2021 12:25

I saw this a couple of months ago.
I thought the parents were very odd and not remotely bothered about their son’s disappearance.

RevolutionRadio · 06/07/2021 12:33

I need to watch this, I was only young so don't remember anything about it at the time.

The toilets are in Saltburn over the road from the beach and the parents lived in Marske, I'd say it was probably a 30ish minute walk across the beach or through the allotments depending where their exact starting point was.

CookieClub · 06/07/2021 12:35

Is this on netflix? Or where can I see this documentary? thanks

Maggiesfarm · 06/07/2021 12:49

Look on the ITV hub, that's where I saw it. Just put 'Accused of Murdering our Son' in search.

FlorrieLindley · 06/07/2021 12:54

My in-laws live in Marske and when we visit we often take a trip to Saltburn. I'd not heard of the case as we live at the other end of the country.
MIL and I used the ladies and when we came out she told me about the missing man who had, in her words "just vanished into thin air". I remember being fascinated by it.

worktrip · 06/07/2021 13:03

I believe them based on the documentary. I think its likely someone knew Stephen, saw him in the toilet and encouraged him to walk away with them, or he left on his own and met someone.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 06/07/2021 13:05

There is also nothing to suggest his parents were overprotective and unhappy he was getting more confidence, going out more etc. They seemed to be supporting him in becoming more independent. There is no suggestion or history of any violence at home.

There's a suggestion he came back from the pub once after having too much to drink. His father had words with him, put his hands on him but didn't hit him.

The only things that are suspicious are the daughter getting the date wrong, the father no longer wanting to pay for his son's football ticket so the son doesn't go to the match like normal, the mother changing her story slightly and not remembering if the left the house together or separately when they went on their walk, her assumption he'd just abandon her at the toilets and walk off without telling her and their slightly odd reactions to his disappearance.

I think everyone believes he's dead and not missing.
