On tonight. Film with James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan about a married couple who hate each other coping in lockdown. Looks good.

Watched this last night and keep thinking about it. Reminded me of an Alan Bennett play, but they were class observations at a time of massive social upheaval so in many ways this type of observational drama is just as timely. I agree it feels raw and soon as you watch it though.
The only thing that struck afterwards was how little the son factored. I spent most of that time worrying about my kids.

Pusspot · 19/06/2021 16:08

Loved it. Highly recommend.

Motnight · 19/06/2021 19:23

I loved this. I think that in 5 years time it will be considered an excellent drama that really captured the country's nativity and then anger.

LunaNorth · 20/06/2021 21:55

It was very near the bone for me. The bit where she described watching her mum die on FaceTime...I had to hold the phone up to my dying mum’s ear so my sisters could say goodbye. She didn’t die of Covid, but we were under restrictions.

But I thought it was superb. The acting was off the scale.

FakeFruitShoot · 21/06/2021 00:23

I loved it.

Very near the knuckle, though. I have a close friend who lost a parent in a care home and, while she isn't ready to watch anything like this yet (possibly never will be), to hear that white-hot anger articulated on TV was so powerful for me as her friend.

James McAvoy was wonderful. What a shit! But how shitty and selfish and human and kind and intelligent and loving we all are, really.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 22/06/2021 22:52

i was gripped,
it was a good watch.

midsomermurderess · 23/06/2021 18:21

I find it a bit odd that some people are saying it's too soon. Was Staged with David Tennant and Michael Sheen too soon when it ran last year?
Anyway, as this so shouty, I might drop in and out of it. One sitting looks like too much.

FakeFruitShoot · 23/06/2021 21:05

@midsomermurderess As an example, the care home bit when someone close to you has passed away in a care home is very... confronting. But maybe that'd always feel too soon.

Lottapianos · 23/06/2021 21:08

Really loved it. Wonderful acting and writing. So full of rage, and quite rightly.

Grenlei · 23/06/2021 21:21

I didn't like it. All a bit too worthy and middle class angst for me. Typical BBC fodder. James McAvoy was good because he'd read the back of a shampoo bottle well, but that was the best thing I could say about it.

purpleme12 · 25/06/2021 12:59

I tried watching it but i didn't like the format.
So much so that i fast forwarded to see if it would and it didn't
I didn't catch me at all and i can't see the appeal

Spandrel · 25/06/2021 16:02

All a bit too worthy and middle class angst for me.

What's 'worthy', or indeed middle-class, about blaming your mother's death in a care home on government stupidity in the face of a pandemic?

ImperfectTents · 25/06/2021 16:13

God I loved it

kofiban · 25/06/2021 17:03

I thought it was brilliant but you definitely have to accept the play-like style, you don't get that much on tv and it was quite jarring at first but I found her talking about her mother very moving and liked their relationship backstory and their political differences, it felt very real to me.
It was very middle class though, but not sure that's a crime

Lottapianos · 25/06/2021 19:31

'It was very middle class though, but not sure that's a crime'

Well, indeed.

Landlubber2019 · 25/06/2021 19:36

Thought it was excellent and well worth my time

JudyMoonlight · 07/07/2021 21:29

Late to this but loved it. I think it’s worth a rewatch, maybe in a few months.

musicalfrog · 14/07/2021 07:15

Just finished watching this (over two sessions) and ended up really enjoying it.

Didn't like the first ten minutes but I saw a comment on twitter saying it's worth sticking with, so I did and I'm really glad I did.

Absolutely cracking acting from these two, and I think Sharon Horgan's character spoke for many about her pain and anger re her mum. It really packed a powerful punch.

Lots of truths spoken about many relationships during lockdown too. Many of us have a love hate relationship with our partners (particularly at such a time of stress as lockdown) and it was quite shocking - and a little bit comforting - to see this reflected on screen.

LadyEloise · 21/07/2021 12:24

I watched last night and thought it was powerful.
So well done.
Kudos to Dennis Kelly the writer and to Sharon Horgan and James Mc Avoy for their brilliant acting.
I hope Together wins awards, both for the screenplay and the acting.

longtompot · 08/08/2021 00:04

Finally watched it after recording it. I didn't like it as much as series one of Staged, but it was heartbreaking at times. Not a couple that should be together imo, trying to poison each other ffs!
