I've only seen two , but as it's only three parts I guess many have binged this already.
No spoilers on the other thread , but you can on here ..
(It can also be the Stephen Graham / Sean Bean appreciation society too!!)
The bit with the turps was horrible. Also I now know how they manage to get hold of drugs inside.

I've only seen 2 too. The bit with the turps was horrible.

It's weirdly like a LOD off shoot what with Tommy Robinson being king pin, deals being done under the underpass and folk hissing rat at each other.

It's so brooding you just feel the constant threat..even when the bloke wanted his card writing I was half expecting him to thump Mark or worse.

I hope there's a bit if redemption in the last one. A teeny bit of a nice ish ending, but I can't see it somehow.

cheeseisthebest · 09/06/2021 09:58

Watched them all, its fantastic. Agree the turps bit was horrendous, you really feel like you are in prison. I've never seen Sean Bean in anything before, what an incredible actor he is.

minty133 · 09/06/2021 10:00

I had a few questions after watching it (really enjoyed it btw, superb acting especially by Sean Bean):

  • would they really allow a prisoner to attend a conference unattended, untagged?
  • why was the son in prison?
  • how did the prison officers know to search Sean's cell? They mentioned 'intel' but from where?
MrsDoctorDear · 09/06/2021 10:01

It was so tense!!

I thought Sean Bean was outstanding in the character he played.

I like Stephen Graham but Sean definitely stood out for me.

minty133 · 09/06/2021 10:04

Oh and why after the boiling water and sugar incident did they still allow kettles in the cells??

the80sweregreat · 09/06/2021 10:18

Having the kettle was a surprise considering they can't have coloured in pictures from home , has to be a photocopy. Such weird rules.

Why didn't he just say he'd been asked to do something illegal and ask for an escort

Then he could have just said they decided on an escort and he wasn't able to do the job

copperpotsalot · 09/06/2021 10:23

I absolutely love SG. The guy who played the one who killed his friend aged 13 is a director and is currently directing a film starring SG. Comes out later this year, can't wait for that

the80sweregreat · 09/06/2021 10:41

Whenever SG is interviewed he seems so sweet and unassuming. Acted with so many big names , yet has his feet on the ground
(Makes a change from all the ' lovey stuff' )

BigSandyBalls2015 · 09/06/2021 11:37

I hadn't realised that was SG's wife (playing his wife).

the80sweregreat · 09/06/2021 11:48

I now have a fear of going into prison.
I wouldn't survive five minutes!

Cocolapew · 09/06/2021 12:00

I've watched them all. Sean Bean was great. I like the way he didn't snap and change his whole persona, I think that would have been unrealistic. Even though its what we all wanted.
I'm never going to prison.

Rillington · 09/06/2021 12:29

I was confused how the chaplain was reading the mother's words when the service was at the same time. How would she know what the mother was going to say?

I thought it was really good.

Cocolapew · 09/06/2021 12:43

I had presumed she had emailed it. The Chaplin had emailed Marks to his mum.

BrightGoldenHazeintheMeadow · 09/06/2021 20:30

Thanks for starting the thread the80s.

Copper I had a lot of the same questions.

I had to fast forward when Mark was being beaten in the cell.

SG was great as ever but Sean Bean was a revelation. Sad to see Sue Johnston, only 15 years his senior and a few years ago cast as his lover now cast as his mother.

SpeedwellBlue · 09/06/2021 20:35

I've started watching episode 3. In the first episode he started to make friends with someone. Can someone remind me who that was as I've lost track.

The Irish cleaner?

Is it worth watching I can't bear it if him and his cell mate come to grisly ends with turps and kettles. I want him to toughen up but not turn..

Fnib · 09/06/2021 20:43

I thoroughly enjoyed this. @JaniieJones yes watch it you'll be fine.

SpeedwellBlue · 09/06/2021 20:55

Thanks janiie

2Rebecca · 09/06/2021 23:35

Just watched ep 1 but also not sure how many episodes I want to watch as I don't want to see decent people being beaten up. I know it happens but that doesn't mean it should be dramatised for my entertainment. I feel this way about a lot of gritty bleak dramas and misery memoirs

AbsolutelyPatsy · 10/06/2021 06:06

it was so unfair that the son/dad could not come to some sort of conclusion, they knew dad would be compromised

AbsolutelyPatsy · 10/06/2021 06:08

i was tearful during the funeral, that was so well done.

Sojo88 · 10/06/2021 09:14

I finished watching this last night. It was so well done and really realistic, you do kind of feel like you're in prison yourself! It just seems so unfair what happened to the officer - what else could he have done? He tried moving his son to a safer place and it was clear that that doesn't work. The boss clearly felt bad for him too.

There were some other good characters there, like Mark's new cell mate and the guy he was teaching to read.

the80sweregreat · 10/06/2021 09:31

It was sad the young cell mate getting on the drugs inside. I know he did a terrible thing and deserved his time, but this is probably what happens. When Mark said goodbye to him it was obvious he was really hooked :(
It was good, but being allowed out on his own to the conference? Would that really happen?

OP posts:
Reasonistreason · 10/06/2021 15:29

I believe that prisoners nearing the end of their sentence are allowed out unaccompanied if they’re not considered a risk to general public - or to abscond ! So, quite believable that SB was able to go to a conference.
