Did anyone watch "What are we feeding our kids?" on BBC1

Here's link.

i astounded that there has been little to no research of the effect of UPSs on our brains and bodies. The results on Chris (after one month) were dire indeed.

Chris's brain scans before and after were shocking but not surprising as UPF food manufacturers spend multi££££millions on research to find the perfect bliss point to skewer and keep new addicted consumers eating their products again and again.

I was interested in the huge increase in our consumption of UPF foods since 1980 but would have liked to see the difference from 1970 or 1960 because when I was a child growing up (in 60s) there was virtually no UPF foods in our home, all meals were cooked using fresh meat/fish, eggs, veg and fruit with some dried/tinned goods and no ready meals/takeaways. Eating out (or takeaways) was a very rare treat indeed and snacking between meals was frowned upon and not encouraged.

The representative from the food industry was, not surprisingly, reticent about their role in the deteriorating health of our nation's population. Nestle's success in infiltrating remote communities with their UPF-packed supermarket-boats and creating new addicted consumers (and an obesity epidemic) was an eye-opener but not at all surprising seeing as their role in exploiting breastfeeding mothers in third world countries is well known, too.

Anyway, did anyone watch it. What did you think?

So cute. I don't add honey but thank you for the suggestion. I like them raw with strawberries and Greek yoghurt usually.

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/06/2021 08:01

They defrost more than cook, I was surprised they didn’t mush and avoided them for years because of that but fresh ones are so pricey.

A lot of honey producers kill the bees off before winter starts, agave syrup might be a better option if you need added sweetness & are into animal rights.

PetuniaPot · 06/06/2021 11:38

I put frozen berries in a dish with oats to soak up the juice then top it with yoghurt sprinkled with dark sugar that dissolves to look pretty as it sits in the fridge defrosting until I serve it and call it dessert. I like mine for breakfast next day.

(Tesco do a cheaper frozen mixed berries pack that's wrong sizes or something. It's always in the most inaccessible corner of course!)

Isn’t agave pretty processed Fluffy?
How processed is maple syrup? Don’t they just tap the trees for that?

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/06/2021 21:24

Ooh good point. No idea about maple syrup.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 06/06/2021 21:29

Maple the best I'd imagine. I don't sweeten at all fluffy, just have fruit with it. Good idea re baking it in or using for overnight oats, my favourite.

TiddleTaddleTat · 07/06/2021 08:54

Also worth considering the food miles involved in these alternatives to honey - I can buy honey made by a local producer (just a small scale beekeeper) within 10 miles away but agave or maple are going to be produced hundreds / thousands of miles away, packaged and shipped etc.

@keeponkeepinon Duchy Originals Brown Batch is the only reasonable soft loaf that I’ve found, they do pittas and bread rolls too - wholemeal wheat flour, water, sunflower oil, yeast, sugar, wheat gluten, spirit vinegar, sea salt, wheat flour, flour treatment agent ascorbic acid.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 14/06/2021 20:17

I have the simplest brown sofa bread recipe literally ten mins, if you want it.

TrashKitten10 · 15/06/2021 17:33

@keeponkeepinon I know you said you don't have time to bake but could you make a big batch of fairy cakes/biscuits and freeze? A lot of baked goods freeze and defrost really well and at least then it might only be a fortnightly/monthly effort.

www.babyledfeeding.com/recipe/grannys-10-minute-brown-bread/

Here it is. Love it, will make all summer for camps and picnics.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 15/06/2021 20:39

I don't have a cookies recipe but I make granola bars with dates and banana as the sugar and they are delicious, full of oats, nuts and seeds. Love them warm with natural yoghurt.

TrashKitten10 · 15/06/2021 20:50

@keeponkeepinon Yes you can absolutely freeze cookies. A lot of recipes say to freeze the dough unbaked and then cook the dough from frozen but I don't want to turn the oven on for a few cookies so I've frozen the cookies after baking and they've defrosted absolutely fine. I've used the below recipe and they're gorgeous.

Can I ask.

Having watched the programme, are canned tomatoes not good?!! I practically use that in all my cooking!! Is it best to use live tomatoes?

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/06/2021 22:16

Their fine.

RedHotChiliChips · 15/06/2021 23:01

Plain canned tomatoes are fine.

And yes to freezing cookies too. Just freeze the flat on a baking sheet first and then bag them up. Stops them freezing into a one giant block.

So... 1 month after watching this programme and cutting out sugar and UPF I’m 5.5kg down Grin

I watched this at the same time I read the book “Why we eat (too much)” and both really inspired me to overhaul my diet.

I thought I wasn’t eating many UPFs until I looked at the packets. Despite cooking all meals from scratch I was actually eating quite a lot of heavily processed food.

But the best thing has been that my inflammation has completely gone. I’m more supple and don’t get random hip/ leg/ foot pain. My IBS has totally disappeared.

We’re not meant to eat this modern crappy diet. Our bodies don’t like it.

This programme woke me up and I’m very grateful. Not all calories are equal. That’s the biggest diet myth of them all.

Also for anyone who is interested in this way of eating, come join us on the why we eat thread on the weight loss chat forum! Loads of support and recipe/ food ideas over there
