Recommendations for mystery / murder mystery series

Pickledonionsfortea · 20/05/2021 20:09

I’m looking for a new series to watch with my daughter (young teen) - she really likes Shakespeare and Hathaway, Father Brown, Death in paradise and Midsomer murders. So murder mysteries but not too dark. Any recommendations?

I watched a bit of the Mallorca files, I think it's on iPlayer, that may be suitable as it was shown in the afternoons.

OP - You mentioned all the ones I was going suggest!

Hustle - more mystery than murder but worth watching about a group of con artists, really good series

Jonathan Creek
Poirot
Miss Marple
Diagnosis Murder

White Collar on Netflix

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries would be a good one to watch with your daughter.

I love the revamped Magnum PI. It's the perfect end to my weekend. Lovely scenery and a cast that really seems to work together.

Do you have Netflix/Amazon Prime?

overwork · 21/05/2021 19:20

McDonald and Dodds on ITV

dontcallmelen · 21/05/2021 19:26

The coroner is a good watch, was on during the day like Father Brown etc think it’s on Drama now, also Brokenwood mysteries again on Drama, neither are to dark.
New tricks or Foyles War possibly.

dontcallmelen · 21/05/2021 19:26

YY to Miss Fisher!

Agatha Raisin on Sky One is good too, quirkyand definitely not too dark. I recently watched and enjoyed WPC56 on Drama I believe, that used to be shown in the afternoon slot on BBC 1 after Doctors. Some of that plot might possibly be too dark for a young teen though, not sure...my 11 year old saw a few episodes and liked them but there was one I was glad she wasn't in the room with me for. Also on Alibi a series about a man and his dog, Hudson and Rex.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 22/05/2021 13:29

Also, don't know if it's available on Prime but remember the show Monk? I bet that would be great for her. I enjoyed Take Two too with Rachel Bilson.

dontcallmelen · 22/05/2021 13:53

Ooh Monk was brilliant, very quirky but gentle.

Have you watched The Pact on BBC 1? 6 parts.

Pickledonionsfortea · 23/05/2021 16:26

@smallandimperfectlyformed I’ve enjoyed Agatha Raisin myself, but it’s not something I’d show my daughter yet, because some of it is quite scary and dark. I think she wouldn’t follow some of the subtleties of the relationships between the main characters, though I may be underestimating her. I’ll just keep AR for myself at the moment!

@Palavah
I haven’t seen the Pact yet, I’ll look that up.

I’ve never heard of Monk, I’ll go and look into that as well.

Thanks everybody for your suggestions. We watched the first episode of the Mallorca files. Not an instant hit, but we’ll watch it again and see if we get into it, sometimes it takes a couple of episodes to get to know the characters.

Rosemary and Thyme - it’s very light weight and easy viewing!

Puffinhead · 23/05/2021 22:14

The early one-hour episodes of Poirot are good too.
