I didn't find the characters that believable either. Anna never twigged that the DD may be pregnant despite the fact she's been worried about her rebelling and she's constantly throwing up? Max suggesting they say that Jack raped her in the woods and using the pregnancy as evidence was a stupid suggestion because she already knew she was pregnant by then so would have been too far along for it to wash. The hinting that the son is gay and attracted to Jack was completely pointless, I don't know what they were going for there. Nancy confessing was daft, and the kind of stuff that would only happen in a drama. It doesn't matter how close I am to a friend, you wouldn't catch me doing that.
All in all it was a bit daft but a decent enough story at face value. I can see them doing another series I think. They could explore how the dynamics have changed at the brewery, how that family are coping with Jack's baby and Louie finding out it's her great/niece nephew, and of course it coming out somehow that Nancy wasn't the murderer.[/quote]
Agree with all this. Also, it's no longer possible (for very good reason) to get a murder conviction on the basis of a confession alone. And the police are far more genned up nowadays about why someone might confess to a crime they haven't committed: they'd be grilling Nancy over and over about this, watching for any inconsistencies. They'd also be getting someone to look at her mental health and her personal situation. ("Has this woman been under a lot of stress? Yes. Is she likely to be making odd and drastic decisions? Yes. Is it likely that she is lying in order to protect a friend? Absolutely yes!")
Max is in the police, fgs! Are we really meant to think he'd put himself into the awful position of perverting the course of justice to the extent that he does? Allowing a vulnerable person to carry the can and serve years in prison? And if anyone starts to think that the conviction is odd, which it is, then Max's complicity could and probably would be blown right out of the water.
Anna seemed clueless. As you say, not picking up on her daughter's pregnancy. And also lying about the missing money, telling Max she'd opened another account with higher interest. He could check this out, easily! He saw right through that lie straightaway, as most of us with half a brain would.
