Comedy series to watch with DC age 9 and 12?

I'd like to sit down as a family like we did in the 80s and watch something funny together. Any ideas? I wondered about Modern Family but it's a while since I watched it...would a 9 and a 12 year old like that? Are there too many sex jokes?!

Ideas welcome Smile

@CanOfLilt I always find the website Common Sense Media quite useful for gauging age appropriateness - as it says what sexual references are in, some of it a take with a pinch of salt after reading but it is a helpful guide to have a quick glance at what it says as it has a rough guide of how much violence, bad language and sex references are in the show.

The Middle (not Malcolm ITM), we watched all 8 seasons back to back twice in lockdown 1. Kids were 8 and 11 then. It’s much more recent than MITM, which I found really dated.

Isn’t one of the male ghosts from Ghosts a bit full if suggestive sexual references?that’s what’s always out my off the kids watching it.

At the moments they’re loving Fawlty Towers.

Our DS enjoys Red Dwarf and Brooklyn 99.

funtimefrank · 16/05/2021 07:52

So Ghosts
The goes wrong show
Red dwarf

Tried Friday night dinner with them but whilst I love it I had forgotten how sweary it is

I also tried both father ted and blackadder and neither went down well so I've sold the children because they are heathens

Forkrightorf · 16/05/2021 08:06

Taskmaster is really funny - it's a game show rather than a comedy drama, there's a swear-free version on 4 on demand.
Also second the Goes Wrong Show, my DC howl with laughter and have memorised most of the episodes!

Perfectly reasonable imho Grin

Well we watched the first 2 episodes of outnumbered with them and it went down like a lead balloon tbh. Then dh and I watched the first 2 episodes of modern family for the first time in years...still not sure about that for the 9year old. Then again I remember watching Grease as an older teen and being shocked that I'd been allowed to watch it when I was 10 - I think a lot just goes over your head when you're younger!

You've all given me loads of ideas, so thanks (and thanks for the common sense media tip too, v useful website which I discovered when looking into various playstation games that I was being asked for).

This thread has just reminded me about Allo Allo! We watched that as a family when I was 9/10 and I thought it was the most hilarious thing. I wonder if it’s still available to watch?

MouDeVe · 16/05/2021 08:18

My kids LOVE modern family and watched it from age 9. Think we're on at least third time watching some of the episodes now!

SandyDays · 16/05/2021 08:19

We've just finished all 7 seasons of Gilmore Girls which my 11 year old loved, this was after Friends and Modern Family.

CanOfLilt · 16/05/2021 08:22

Oh God allo allo! Strongly suspect that would be very dated now...

Very dated! Grin
poorbuthappy · 16/05/2021 08:45

Deffo The Middle. We binged it during 1st lockdown and loved it.
Totally appropriate.

Netaporter · 16/05/2021 08:51

The Goldbergs. We watch it as a family (although more so because the kids think I am Beverley 🤣) so funny and as parents we spend time reminiscing.

Makegoodchoices · 16/05/2021 09:10

My son watches Ghosts and the Gone Wong Show and loves them. Ghosts is the best thing that’s come along in years.

Biggest hit was Taskmaster PG - although they bleep swearing but not adult concepts. We had a conversation about what ‘crowning’ meant as a result and I’ll have to explain piles when we get to the Wozniak episodes.

One to listen to rather than watch - Cabin Pressure, Radio 4. Occasionally available on BBC Sounds as a catch up, but otherwise I believe you can buy it from Audible. Utterly glorious.

From the same writer/performer - John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme. Sketch-based comedy, also a Radio 4 programme. The current series is a bit different but the first 8 series are very, very funny.

ZenNudist · 16/05/2021 09:25

Ghosts definitely

Ds (10) likes modern family and the fresh Prince of bel air on iPlayer

We watch the mandolorian on Disney plus as a family now.

notturningintopowerranger · 16/05/2021 09:42

My kids adored Malcolm in the middle. I want to watch everyone hates Chris with them but don’t know where to find it. I’ll try Friday night dinner as I loved that and Ghosts!

Iamthe4thH · 16/05/2021 09:49

Big Bang Theory?

ipswichwitch · 16/05/2021 09:55

9yo DS loves Malcolm in the Middle
and Fresh Prince of Bel Air. We’ve also been watching The Mandalorian, and Total Wipeout

ItWasLikeThatWhenIGotHere · 16/05/2021 10:00

Another voice for John Finnemore’s Souvenir Programme, Cabin Pressure, Taskmaster Bleeped, Ghosts and Futurama.

SpacePug · 16/05/2021 10:39

Big bang theory possibly

Dogmatix34 · 16/05/2021 10:55

Where can I find the Middle? We’ve just finished every episode of Malcolm in the Middle and need something new to start!

Baconking · 16/05/2021 11:06

Fresh off the boat
Everybody hates Chris
Young Sheldon

They are repeated on Comedy Central.

Not sure if you can get season 1 on catch up...
