Is anyone watching Sex, Myths and the Menopause tonight? Its on C4 at 9pm. Davina McCall discussing menopause, HRT, taboos and myths surrounding it and how she coped with it.

She has been doing lots of work recently to raise awareness of the menopause and how hard it is.

Yes I’m planning to watch it.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 12/05/2021 18:12

Yes I’ll be watching. Clips look excellent

covetingthepreciousthings · 12/05/2021 21:09

Yes I'm watching, I'm really disappointed that this subject isn't more talked about.
I'm in my 30s now and honestly have no idea really what to expect, what age it happens, what symptoms you can expect. It's really frustrating really as a woman to have something like this as such an unknown.

I think if it was men who went through this it would be more talked about.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 12/05/2021 21:14

It’s so good to see all the symptoms bro g discussed openly and some of the myths around hrt being challenged

RampantIvy · 12/05/2021 21:20

I'll have to watch it on catch up.

I just would like to add that the menopause isn't horrific for everyone. Hormonal migraines were the only negative for me, and they stopped more or less when my periods stopped.

hotubhannah · 12/05/2021 21:46

The program is unique. Never before has this information been shared so fully. I'm half furious its taken until 2021 for this to be OK to talk about and half relieved it's no longer a taboo subject. Thank.goodness for Davina

MrsWooster · 12/05/2021 21:49

It’s ace. As pp said, it’s unbelievable that this subject has been unmentionable for so long.

EachandEveryone · 12/05/2021 21:49

And also the hrt shes on is surely individualised to suit her needs. Most of us cant afford to tap into private care. Didnt Mariella Frostrupp do a similar show a couple of years ago? I havent watched it yet but I will on catch up later.

DMCWelshcakes · 12/05/2021 22:04

That was really informative. I agree that if it was a thing that affected men it would have been properly funded and managed by now.

Seaoftroubles · 12/05/2021 22:10

Excellent programme on this important subject, very clearly explained. In more depth than the Mariella Frostrupp programme a while ago. Also shocking to learn that G. P's only have to do an optional E module on menopause... Hence why so many are clueless about the subject!

hotubhannah · 12/05/2021 22:13

Shocking really. This is the first time in years I've really been bothered about an issue!

Newgirls · 12/05/2021 22:15

I'll have to watch it on catch up.

I think it’s that falling oestrogen continues for life impacting on heart, bone and brain health. It’a not just a 1-2 year thing, hot flushes and done. That’s a misconception.

Isn’t that shocking? Every single woman will be impacted and it’s an optional module. So much misdiagnosis of heart health and mental health

Bio identical patches and gels are now widely avail on nhs. That’s the stuff clinics prescribe. Used to be very limited options
JamieLeeCurtains · 12/05/2021 22:18

It's really good. So good I'm watching again on 4+1.

Newgirls · 12/05/2021 22:19

Take home for me was that hrt protects against dementia. I wish more women knew that. We are twice at risk as men.

Undervaluedandsad · 12/05/2021 22:19

HRT information was reassuring.

colouringindoors · 12/05/2021 22:20

I think it's appalling that GPs only have an optional e-module on menopause. There is NO way that if men had menopause this would be the case.

DurhamDurham · 12/05/2021 22:20

I enjoyed it but feel it's just the tip of the iceberg and there's so much more that needs to be discussed.

I'm 50 with peri menopausal symptoms and sometimes feel like I'm going mad. I'm lucky in that I don't experience hot flushes but I have regular brain fog, I'm teary, almost constant irritation at small things, weight gain and a reduced sex drive. But if you met me you'd have no idea.

I think it's great that it's been on tv but it's left me angry that it's so unreported and unrepresented. We need more tv like this.

Newgirls · 12/05/2021 22:21

That the breast cancer research that made headlines was based on women 70+.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 12/05/2021 22:22

I would have liked her to have made the point more clearly that even without symptoms the underlying damage is being done.

Never heard this before and I'm pretty well-informed.

SueSaid · 12/05/2021 22:25

I'd have liked to hear a balanced argument from doctors who don't recommend HRT. Dr Newson is a private Dr making money from prescribing hrt so of course she will recommend it. Though I liked what she said about thinking of it as a deficiency.

I'm on the fence about it. Whatever unpleasant symptoms people experience do not compare to the unpleasant tests and treatment required for cancer. I hope there will be more research specifically into the effect of newer drugs.

howdidigettobe50something · 12/05/2021 22:30

But the increased risk is tiny. I think the programme said 4 per 1000. Much less than drinking every day or having a high BMI.

catgotyourbrain · 12/05/2021 22:32

Such a timely programme. Well done Davina.
