@MotherOfGodWeeFella

I agree she isn't smug.

She has a smug smile.

Clymene · 13/05/2021 16:48

It's a bit like Bake Off isn't it? They go on about the first two rounds but really they decide who goes out based on the Showstopper/Made to Measure challenge

MoltenLasagne · 13/05/2021 17:47

I don't think she's smug, I think she's a talented young female sewer who looks pleased when she does well. In fact if anything she could probably be a bit more confident in her abilities seeing as she's been one of the most consistent sewers so far.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 13/05/2021 18:02

I didn't really like some of the rompers. I'm all for putting babies in bright colours rather than pastels, but some of them were a bit too dark for me. I loved the crab, I think with costumes a simple idea is better than anything too fancy.

I agree the coats looked too small (especially Andrew's) and I wasn't sure how practical some of them would be. Rebecca's was very sweet, but didn't seem to fit terribly well.

I was actually warming to Adam — he'd lost the nervous giggle most of the time. But the coat just wasn't good.

I spotted an item of clothing I own in the haberdashery for next week. Blush

oooo we’ll have to all guess what it is next week.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 13/05/2021 18:45

Gutted about Adam but it was the right decision.

Serena is just cracking on with things and doing a grand job in the most part.

I don’t do smuggery very well and I don’t find it in her at all.

I really liked Damien’s wee coat. Smile

Absolutely this. She's good at sewing, the actual sewing not the being all quirky and amusing, why shouldn't she know this and be pleased about it.
iklboo · 13/05/2021 22:13

Selena is not smug at all. Why do we have to denigrate a young woman for being good at something?

iklboo · 13/05/2021 22:13

Serena, sorry.

LadyEloise · 14/05/2021 08:10

@Rousette "......Decades and many stones and pounds ago, I had some sugar pink dungarees.... sigh"

Me too Smile - in my case 4 stones ago Sad

Roussette · 14/05/2021 08:23

Ditto me! Oh how I loved those dungarees, they weren't the baggy sort, very fitted, very pink hey ho

^ this with bells on.

Serena isn't smug in the slightest.

I think the first two rounds are used as tie breakers.
SoupDragon · 14/05/2021 08:31

She has a smug smile.

What is a "smug smile"? She is simply quieter than, say, Farie who shows great delight at having won. A slightly restrained smile is not the same as being smug.

LadyEloise · 14/05/2021 08:35

I can't believe Damien has got so far in the competition. 😮
Serena isn't smug. Just good at sewing and possibly shy.
Rebecca is doing well. Quietly getting on with it.
Farie too is doing well. Coming in to her own.
It was an unusually bad week for Raph

Roussette · 14/05/2021 08:53

Why on earth does anyone think Serena is smug? She's a young girl and she smiled. Why do we have to assume it's a smug smile.
Weird.

I love how Farie is growing in confidence. Rebecca is quiet and a good sewer.

Damien is an accident waiting to happen! I think there will be a spectacular cock up which will see him out!

Andrew is good and maybe will come more into his own

MoltenLasagne · 14/05/2021 09:19

To be fair to Damien, if I were put in the same position I'd struggle to follow instructions exactly under tight time conditions and would probably default to instincts and I definitely would be shocking at the transformation. I think most sewers would prefer the planned and practised task!

It made me realise the GBBO has two pre-practised tasks (the signature and the showstopper) with only one unseen (the technical). For Sewing Bee, the first task is unseen and under time pressure and the second task is generally bonkers and if you don't get in first with the fabric choices you're screwed so then you only really get to shine in the last task.

I may have been overthinking this...

MargaretThursday · 14/05/2021 09:43

If I was doing it, then the middle challenge would be the one I'd really enjoy. I used to do a lot of go to the charity shop and buy a couple of cheap outfits to transform for normally children's costumes for school. I'm not particularly good technically though (only done home sewing, never had any instructions) so I wouldn't be good at the rest.

Those talking about children in the playground: My dc had Kidorable raincoats. The girls had the pink fairy ones which had wings on the back (and on the umbrellas and the wellies too!) and ds had (I think) a dinosaur one which had a tail.
None of them had problems with other children pulling them, and they loved them. The bits that stuck out lasted well except the wings on the boots which did tend to fall off. I got them second hand, and passed them on after a lot of wear still looking good.

I do notice though, looking at the website that they seem to have reduced the bits that stuck out (doesn't look like the current fairy one has wings for example) so maybe some people did find those bits a problem.

Chemenger · 14/05/2021 11:09

Definition of smug:
"having or showing an excessive pride in oneself or one's achievements"

Smiling after completing a difficult challenge does not make someone smug.

knittingaddict · 14/05/2021 11:25

I don't see smug either. Maybe it says more about you if you interpret a smile as smug and the vast majority of others don't.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 14/05/2021 11:28

You would see what smug really was if I managed to sew on an ‘Esme-proof’ button in an hour.

im a bit confused by this series.
Damiens coat was awful, yet he stayed in,

SoupDragon · 14/05/2021 11:55

Adam's coat was worse. It had more technical errors.
