Can someone tell me about Irish TV please? I was thinking the other day about how little Irish TV we see in the UK. I imagine there must be dramas made in the Republic of Ireland in English. Why doesn't the BBC show any? The only TV show I've seen is father Ted and I'm not even sure that was made in Ireland by an Irish company. Not sure about Normal People either.
Just curious.

Fair city is our most popular and based in Dublin - you do NOT want to watch it 🤣🤣

We used to have another one called glenroe.

I think there's an Irish language one too called Ros na Rún (although I don't know if that one is still going either)

Our free tv channels are
Rte 1
Rte2
Virgin media 1,2 and 3
TG4

Sorry you said dramas and I went on a run with our soaps...

SelkieIntegrated · 19/04/2021 18:47

I never watch it. Ever. €168 well spent 😂
If occasionally there was something worth watching, I watch it on the rte player.
I would probably watch it if we didnt have netflix/now
I get news online.
Ive no need for specifically Irish TV

Irish made tv programmes are absolutely shocking that's why 😂😂😂 one episode of reeling back the years will cure you of any curiosity you have

SelkieIntegrated · 19/04/2021 18:53

Lol
I actually like reeling in the years, but only the second time round, when it's history.

romdowa · 19/04/2021 18:58

Or that love / hate rubbish, people were so obsessed by it but I thought it was utter drivel. Sponge bob square pants in irish is worth a watch though, it's hilarious.

MadeForThis · 19/04/2021 19:02

Young offenders is on bbc3

Confusedandshaken · 19/04/2021 19:31

We live in London but have access via satellite to Irish tv but TBH imonly watch the news Dr Phil and Reeling in the Years. There was a fantastic Irish drama series a few years back called Love Hate. It ran for a few years and I don't know why it wasn't picked up for U.K. tv.

But on the whole, IMO home produced Irish tv isn't as good as U.K or American tv. I don't know why because there is so much talent in Ireland - perhaps they all migrate for more money and more opportunities in larger markets.

JaneJeffer · 19/04/2021 20:25

Red Rock was shown on the BBC.

You'll be getting Smother soon and I hope you won't be as confused as I was.

JaneJeffer · 19/04/2021 20:27

And Love/Hate was amazingly brilliant so ignore anyone who says otherwise!

JaneJeffer · 19/04/2021 20:29

Blood was another good one. Adrian Dunbar is in it.

propf · 19/04/2021 21:31

I enjoyed Can't Cope Won't Cope.

onlyconnect · 20/04/2021 07:13

Ok thanks. I will look out for the programmes mentioned.

I second this - it was class.
Confusedandshaken · 20/04/2021 12:25

Just remembered another brilliant Irish series - Pure Mule. I loved that.

whattocallhim · 20/04/2021 12:27

I think love/hate was shown on UK channel 5 a few years back. Generally the best programs get shown in the UK eventually

SelkieIntegrated · 21/04/2021 07:46

What was the name of the programme about two girls from sligo house sharing in dublin. One was a bit of a user and self sabateur/se. It was good but only 2 series

SelkieIntegrated · 21/04/2021 07:49

Cant cope wont cope.
I saw it on netflix not tv

HaHaVeryBunny · 21/04/2021 07:57

Yeah that was decent, so tragic one of lead actress died after it was made, she was excellent, her Cork accent was bang on.

Paths to Fredoom from years ago was a great comedy and the Apres Match guys are fantastic, saw them live in Vicar Street and the were brilliant.

But OP Irish tele is pretty much rubbish, you will find the odd gem but its rare.

Irish tv does some excellent documentaries, especially historical ones, but I wouldn’t have said drama was a particular strength. Often dramas are co-productions with UK tv channels anyway, though with Irish directors/writers/actors. Normal People was by an Irish director, for instance, and obviously with an all-Irish cast apart from the female lead. The same director is doing an adaptation of Sally Romney’s first novel, Conversations with Friends, if you liked NP. Not sure what tv channel, though — might be produced with Hulu? — or when out.
