Socci - Dh and I had exactly the same discussion - I think the recent events and scandle surrounding him probably had some influence.
I actually think the 70's is the hardest one to call - Stevie Wonder, David Bowie and Abba.

Skate · 27/10/2004 13:07

Has to be Abba doesn't it?

zubb · 27/10/2004 13:09

70s was so difficult, as the music was all so different. In terms of influence I'd go for Bowie I think. Actually found them all quite hard to call - Smiths would have to be in for the 80S for me.

Michael Jackson did have his profile shown but his personal life is the only reason that me and DH think that he was not an automatic choice for entry - but that is only our opinion!

Was horrified that Duran Duran did not even make the shortlist for the eighties but beastie boys did!! Dh was horrified that the Jam was not there but would agree that the Smiths would be his choice for the 80's

Sorry but just thinking about this programme makes me mad! Robbie Williams getting in makes the whole thing a farce - ok he's sold loads of records, some of which are quite 'pleasant' but he is not a music-changing seminal force like some others that have been left out. I think it's ridiculous that artists like David Bowie, Abba and the Smiths can be left out and don't really see why they should limit the choice to just 1 per decade. Ok, rant over - aaah I feel better now!

He co-wrote it with Guy Chambers I think. That's my fav robbie song btw,but don't think it should really be about whether you really like the artist or not. I don't particularly like Michael Jackson but can respect the reasons why he deserves to be in there as he has been so influencial. I dread to think who Robbie Williams has inspired!

Tinker · 13/11/2004 13:43

Enjoyed watching some of the programmes but agree, it really is a farce now when Robbie Williams gets in. And Cliff for the 50's!

janeybops · 13/11/2004 13:48

Where was Bananarama??????

Makes me wnat to SCREAM

JanH · 13/11/2004 13:49

Why not Cliff for the 50s, Tinker?

JanH · 13/11/2004 13:50

Mind you I haven't seen it so I don't know what happens! Do you mean Cliff was the voice of the 50s? If so I agree, that is crap!

Tinker · 13/11/2004 13:53

Yeah, Jan, Cliff was voted to represent the 50's, ahead of Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash. Lots of dubious choices for the 50's though - Billie Holiday and Nina Simone (?). Neither exactly just 50's artistes but Cliff?

NINA SIMONE?????

JanH · 13/11/2004 13:56

Wot about ELVIS?

Tinker · 13/11/2004 14:00

Just checked, it was Ella Fitzgerald, not Nina Simone - still neither really associated with just the 50's alone.

Elvis is automatic, like the Beatles were for the 60's. Mind you, as have just read on another site, it is the Music Hall of Fame as opposed to Worth.

The British public can always be relied upon to vote predictably though.

JanH · 13/11/2004 14:13

Have checked out website now. I would have voted for Frank Sinatra I think - of those - for fame and worth. Think I agree with Stones for 60s; maybe Elton John for 70s though Abba come close and I can see why Queen got it, spoilt for choice really; have to agree with Michael Jackson, though paid almost no attention to music in the 80s, and the same applies to the 90s, I am not worthy to have an opinion.

It's all a bit pointless really though, isn't it! Ch 4 will run out of ideas for Greatests eventually and then what will they do?

What about Oasis or Nirvana for the nineties, they both were very influential and probably have changed music insome way for the next generations, where as Robbie is only really doing the same as those that have gone before and will come after, don't get me wrong, i don't mind Robbie just don't think his music was particularly influential. Very predictable rubbish voting but then I guess the popular culture masses will be the ones watching the programme and voting.........and what about Bob Dylan, where was he???

Tinker · 13/11/2004 16:36

Dylan was in the 60's one. We were arguing whether Dylan or Stones more influential when watching it. But Dylan was the only one that, when watching, made me want to get my albums out straightaway and play his stuff.

mykidsmum · 13/11/2004 16:44

Oh good I am glad about that, I love Dylan and the Stones but probably listen to Dylan more, I was named after the Dylan song visions of Johanna and my little boy is called Dylan!!!!

Tinker · 13/11/2004 16:48

Excellent taste. My name is also namechecked in Visions etc but sadly have non-hip parents so mere coincidence
