First episode just finished, based on a true crime in 2017. In Swedish and Danish with subtitles and actors from Borgen/The Killing. I'm enjoying it although familiar with what happened

Yes, me too OP. I remembered the case also.

ScienceSensibility · 22/01/2021 22:55

I’ve recorded this.

I remember the case, it was horrific. I’m still unsure whether to watch the programme. What did people think?

colouringindoors · 23/01/2021 00:02

My dad recommended this to me - we're both scandi noir fans. Worth a look?

Halsall · 23/01/2021 00:29

It's very focused on the actual investigation - well, I guess that's why they gave it the title! DH and I started to wonder why we hadn't seen the suspect when they kept talking about interviewing him, so I looked it up on IMDb. Apparently the killer isnt seen as a character at all in the whole series, nor even mentioned by name. It deliberately doesn't dwell on graphic scenes and the director consulted the real-life victim's parents when he was making it.

IMDb reviews vary...some complain that it's slow and boring but we got really drawn into the gradual unfolding of the investigation. And it stars Torben and Kasper from Borgen so what's not to like! Definitely going to stick with it.

ScienceSensibility · 23/01/2021 03:40

Thank you Halsall that is very helpful.

I am going to watch it, I love how they have given the killer no focus, no attention. Such a despicable crime and he lied and lied and lied about the murder.
I’m so glad respect was paid to the family.

humblesims · 23/01/2021 18:45

Just finished binge watching it. I really enjoyed it. It is a slow burn and is very atmospheric. I also love the way the killer is given no attention at all. No graphic imagery or flashbacks.

JemimaTab · 23/01/2021 23:42

I have just finished watching the whole thing. I think it was incredibly well done and quite moving. Yes it does take its time, but if you’re a bit of an old fart like me that makes a refreshing change from a lot of TV drama these days. Also, I liked that we didn’t actually see the perpetrator (or the victim for that matter) - no violence/flashbacks etc. I’d definitely recommend it. Great cast too.

ageingdisgracefully · 25/01/2021 08:01

This sounds good. Smile.

What case is it based on please?

Singingrain1223 · 25/01/2021 08:35

@ageingdisgracefully , the murder of a journalist by a local man. If you don't know the real life story it will seem even more astounding.

It’s the Kim Wall case, sometimes referred to as the submarine case.

colouringindoors · 25/01/2021 21:23

I thought it was excellent. An insight into the detail and dogged determination necessary to gather evidence needed to succeed in court.

I also found it very moving, totally drew me in to the investigation.

I hope her parents were ok with it

JemimaTab · 25/01/2021 21:51

I found this article by the maker of The Investigation, in which he talks about his reasoning for not including the perpetrator.

He also says that Kim’s parents’ cooperated with him on the series. Apparently the parents’ real dog played the part of their dog in the series too!

colouringindoors · 26/01/2021 00:33

Thanks Jemima that's really interesting. I'm glad the parents were involved well. I did wonder if it would be Jens' last case too. Great that the series has changed the story from the submarine murder to the journalist's murder. RIP Kim.

JemimaTab · 27/01/2021 00:43

I also liked the fact that it really concentrated on the Investigation process and how slow and complex it was. Quite often TV dramatisations make it look a bit easy, like there’s one piece of evidence that pulls the whole thing together and it then all slots neatly into place. Whereas here they emphasised just how difficult it was, that the dogs and divers searched again and again, and that it took months for them to find the evidence they needed but they kept going.
I hope more people watch it, it really is worth it.

malloo · 27/01/2021 23:28

I'm a few episodes in, it's excellent, really compelling and very well made. I found the scenes with her parents really moving.

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 27/01/2021 23:36

I've found it a little uncomfortable that it's in the 'scandi noir' genre - as in nice Sunday night entertainment - when it's a true story about a real woman's horrific death. I don't know, maybe I'm a hypocrite as I've watched other 'real life' murder stories like the Serpent, perhaps this is just too recent. I think it was the trailer that made me most uncomfortable, if you like scandi noir you'll love this - that sort of vibe.
It's good that it's focused on the police investigation, not the killer, as others have said.

okstretch · 28/01/2021 11:32

I found it very gripping, and exhausting to watch the efforts they had to make.
Very moving too.
