I'm watching episodes 1 and 2 and I'm hooked. A great documentary for amateur sleuths.
Poor Jiah seems caught between a questionable boyfriend and a high pressure mother. I'm changing my mind frequently on what happened that night!
Anyone else watching? What do you think happened? Missing evidence? History of MH issues?
It reminds me very much of Oscar Pistorius case.

On one hand I think did the apple not fall far from the tree, there are some appalling accusations about Sooraj’s father and if you have enough money....... But Sooraj said he visited Rabia as he was unable to deal with Jiah’s mental state. Their relationship was short and he was young, perhaps he just wanted out. Rabia’s response to that meeting to Jiah was harsh I think.

I think Rabia needs to take a closer look at herself she failed her daughter terribly pushing such a vulnerable young woman into such a business. She was living vicariously through her daughter and expected her to be as resilient as perhaps she was. There was a point where she says her daughter had forgotten her own identity ‘she is Jiah’ but this was only her stage name her real name was Nafisa. They skimmed over the suicide attempt and the fact that she was so mentally fragile even before she met Sooraj speaks volumes. The rejections re film roles, the abortion, the break up, disappointing her mother. I think all these factors may have pushed her over the edge, it’s so very sad.

I think Rabia requested the stay so that she could find the evidence.

Abetting suicide is a bit of a strange term unless you are actively encouraging someone to commit suicide. I could be thrown around quite liberally.

Sooraj may have been a nasty boyfriend - no real idea here - but there are lots of nasty relationships and not everyone kills themselves. And there are lots of people who threaten to kill themselves at the ending of a relationship as an emotional blackmail type of thing. My very abusive ex husband did this to me. If he had gone through with it, would I be to blame? Very abstract accusation.

I think the sisters are full sisters and then the marriage split up and they were just with their mother for early childhood in England. It looked like there was a comfortable amount of money for their upbringing.

purpleme12 · 17/01/2021 23:49

Yes this is what confused me too really

ageingdisgracefully · 18/01/2021 07:40

I'm also confused about the upbringing. There's nothing on wiki to say who the father of the younger sisters is. He apparently left the home when Jiah was 2 which suggests that he wasn't the father of the younger sisters. And yes, they appear to have been comfortably off.

Apparently one of the younger sisters is also an actress, as are a couple of aunts.

Hope it's resolved one way or another for the sale of all concerned.

Let's say Jiah was strong like her mum says she was and she managed to refuse any propositions by Bollywood directors like the one that has had several accusors already. That would explain why she got lots of auditions but then failed to get the part after! Remember her mum told her to just walk away. Maybe that why her own (the mum's) acting career also never took off big time?

Another thing was the first Lolita style film she was in. Maybe she was typecast and kept being offered parts like that that she didn't want to play?

All this would tie in with Sooraj's repeated comments that there is a bigger picture here! Basically, the whole Bollywood industry is to blame for the girl's depression and death imho.

IcedPurple · 18/01/2021 20:03

For me, the mum was really 'protesting too much'. Despite her frequent denials, I think she pushed her daughter into going to Bollywood despite knowing from her own first-hand experience how brutal an environment it was for a fragile young woman - a girl really. And so she channeled her guilt into setting up the boyfriend who - although maybe a spoiled brat and a crap boyfriend - didn't seem to have any motive or opportunity for killing her.

All very sad. I feel sorry for the sisters whose lives are overshadowed by this tragedy and have to live with their mother's guilt and denials.

I belatedly finished the show. Very interesting and how sad...
It feels like the mother raised her daughters as 'strong women' and they weren't allowed to show any weaknesses.
Her doctors talked about Nafisa's depression, she tried to kill herself as a teenager, she was raped at 14 and sexually abused throughout her career but her mothers and sisters breezily dismissed jt all because she was 'strong'.
It must have been a huge burden to be 'strong'.
