I know. Those kids!

I kind of missed how Liam (?) got from not reading anything to reading a whole book about fishing (MNing at the same time)..but it's fab anyway.

ishouldbeironing · 23/10/2007 21:55

The head teacher is getting on my nerves tho - I wonder if she purposely bought a new wardrobe for this

RoyKinnear · 23/10/2007 21:56

Youre right roykinnear, i think it's really changed Liam like a huge weight has been lifted off his shoulders.

Hope Jordon gets it sussed in the end too.

am watchng, dh said he didnt mind what we watched,
oh lucky me

Theclosetpagan · 24/10/2007 21:52

Think the head is just inspirational - enthusiastic and interested in the children.

Fantastic series but so shocking.

GarrottedbyElasticband · 24/10/2007 21:56

two thirds of prisoners cannot read properly
shocking statistics.

margoandjerry · 25/10/2007 09:52

yes I love Benjamin Zephaniah too. He deserved the OBE or whatever he was that he was awarded and refused to take because of the Empire word. Didn't really agree with his reasoning and would have loved to see him publicly recognised. But obviously it was his call.

LIZS · 25/10/2007 10:03

ds (9) was appalled and said they need to be stricter when Jordan was disruptive and walking out of class. That US teacher stood no chance.

margoandjerry · 25/10/2007 10:04

Agree.

But Shannon's little face at the poetry reading. Oh, I was nearly in tears.

drosophila · 25/10/2007 18:52

Having done a google this school out performs my ds's school. Should I be worried?

I am surprised there aren't more posts on this.

Theclosetpagan · 25/10/2007 19:02

Will be watching again tonight. Very vested interest as I have a DS who has just started school. He will be starting Jolly Phonics when he goes back after half term. I am even more determined to support him at home where I can having seen this programme.

wheresthehamster · 25/10/2007 21:52

Wow! That recital was FANTASTIC

maggotandjerry · 25/10/2007 21:53

tears!

maggotandjerry · 25/10/2007 21:58

Shannon is a heartbreaker.

Theclosetpagan · 25/10/2007 22:03

Brilliant series - what a coup for the school to have won the poetry thing.

bubblerock · 25/10/2007 22:07

Great programme - we had Benjamin at our school when I was young and he was brilliant

puppydavies · 25/10/2007 22:09

yay peter what a star fantastic to see how quickly a switched on head can turn things around.

MummyPenguin · 25/10/2007 22:37

drosophila, personally, I would be very worried if Monteagle outperformed my DC's school...

maggotandjerry · 25/10/2007 22:43

FWIW and I am no expert on this, I found the Ofsted reports that I looked at tended to mark the schools with difficult intakes much higher than schools with easier intakes.

My sisters' children went to a very challenging school for a term while they were in the process of moving. A majority of the children didn't have English as a first language so obviously they were well behind in literacy etc.

You wouldn't immediately be aware of this from the narrative of the Ofsted report which was extremely positive about the school and especially the teaching (which I understand was indeed excellent in the circs) but the fact was that the outcomes were not great because the starting point was so low.
