I’ve not watched this one but I always remember watching a bbc documentary a good few years ago on how the 2008 crash affected the American family. It’s one of the saddest things I’ve ever watched, families living in cars, children having one meal a day from school, it’s so sad to watch and it’s sadder that America has been broken for so many years.

I watched it last week, it was very moving. They were such lovely sensitive children and a credit to their single mothers. My heart went out to the boy aged about 12 and the grief he felt hearing that his teacher had died. All the youngsters in their difficult circumstances had hope for better things.
It makes me so angry that the whole world over there are still men who won't face up to their parental responsibilities and financially support their children. We didn't find out why these women were on their own, it could have been d.v. or maybe the fathers were in prison or more likely the fathers were just feckless. I think it would have been said had any of the women been widowed.
Dior the baby girl who was just learning to walk was adorable.

I agree, the kids were all an absolute credit to their parents. And I wanted to know where the dads were, I agree that if they had died it would have been mentioned (or maybe not, as it might make the widowed family seem more "worthy" than the others?). But I wanted to know why they weren't paying child support.

The house that Laiken and her family lived in was something else! Can't believe you can buy a house there for $10k. It didn't look sturdy at all though and the mum couldn't afford to repair the windows. Minimum wage there must be very low, didn't she say she worked 7 days a week, often nights, for under $250/week? I hope the older sister is able to achieve her dreams of getting out of there.

Child support is a lot more hit or miss, my friend doesn't get a penny despite her ex being on $500k in the tech industry, the judge awarded her the house (worth a million) but houses are expensive and 4 kids don't come cheap, nothing ongoing so they had to sell and move a long way out to a cheaper run down property then hope the $400k lasts until the youngest graduates (parents pay for college and health insurance don't forget) whilst he gets an affluent lifestyle. Until the house sold they were living on food from the food bank and running up debts. I can't believe dads aren't made to pay ongoing child support, but it seems they don't
