Netflix, Amazon or Now who would you pay for?

Now we're going to be confined to barracks again which pay tv options would you pay for? We've tried Amazon and Netflix and they were okay; not tried Now TV. I'd say we're quite eclectic and we tend to like BBC dramas, family films like Paddington and the odd subtitled thing like Montalbano or The Bridge. Also loved Mr Winner and Ghosts. Can anyone help me decide? We can only afford one subscription.

I have them all and if I had to pick it would be Netflix.

Groundhogdayzz · 02/11/2020 18:03

Now tv is good as you don’t have to pay a subscription every month you can pick....so I get sky movies for a month or so, then cancel when there is nothing I feel like watching....sport for another month if there’s a lot of premiership games on....maybe costs more in the long run but I like that I can pick and choose from month to month.

NetballHoop · 02/11/2020 18:04

Netflix

Nookable · 02/11/2020 18:05

I've only tried Netflix and Amazon and definitely preferred Netflix. Hate how Amazon has some shows you can only watch 1 season of for free but can pay for the rest.

Haven't tried Now TV but it does have Yonderland which is the same writers/actors as Ghosts so may be worth getting Now TV even if only for a month just to watch that?

GroundAlmonds · 02/11/2020 18:10

We have all three. Blush

Netflix is the best for choice, variety and value.

The other two aren’t far behind, though. (Now has volume control on its remote, which is disproportionately handy if you have a family of remote control losers!)

imarocketman50 · 02/11/2020 18:17

I have netflix and prime and have had now TV but only had that for game of thrones.

I'd choose netflix everytime.

Thanks, everyone. Can anyone have Now TV or do you need a satellite? I know the others just require wi-fi. Do like the idea of deciding from month to month...

Don't forget you can do a free trial on Prime and BritBox which will cover lockdown as long as you remember to cancel at the end!

Holothane · 02/11/2020 18:33

None I have prime for the delivery stuff but not interested in tv subscriptions.

Now TV is internet-based so no satellite dish required. Like others though, I prefer Netflix out the three.

Netflix is the best of all 3. As others say with Amazon, it's not great that you have to pay extra for more seasons or certain films/shows. It's a bit off considering you already pay for a subscription.

Agree. Especially don't like how much they charge - for some series the cost is nearly £2 per episode, it's ridiculous. TBH I don't think we'll bother renewing Amazon next year.
TOADfan · 02/11/2020 20:03

I have Netflix and Amazon. Both are great but ATM I would choose Amazon Prime as I'm watching desperate housewives which is on it.

Rainydays200 · 04/11/2020 13:13

Netflix every time

Pemba · 04/11/2020 14:45

I would agree that Netflix is the best of the three, there is so much variety and some great original content (eg The Crown, Stranger Things). The software works really well too. I do find in general it is biased towards American content though. If you say you prefer British drama, do you even need a subscription? Assuming you have a TV licence, there is so much on BBC IPlayer now, not just stuff broadcast the last few weeks. Have you explored it?

I would say Britbox for British content, the trouble is that over 95% of their content is old stuff shown on UK TV over the last few years, so you may find you've seen most of it. But you could have a free trial and see what you think. Also if you are on EE, they were offering 6 months of Britbox for free

Now TV is basically Sky programming so their big shows tend to be American. Some good stuff though, currently watching The Undoing with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. It's a fraction of the price of actually subscribing to Sky, and it used to be that if you tried to leave you would always get a ridiculously cheap offer to stay. Not sure if that's still happening, but you aren't tied in anyway. Try Googling for Now TV offers. My main complaint about Now TV is that the software is a bit clunky, eg doesn't have the smooth 'rewind 60 seconds' function that both Netflix and BBC IPlayer have.

Amazon Prime is not bad, there is plenty of good content especially films. There is also a lot of absolute dross for some reason. Don't like how they push you towards paid-for content on top of your subscription, as pps said.

Do you have family or friends in different households that you could share a subscription with? It's a bit of a grey area but I do this, DD and her partner have Now TV and we have Netflix and we share logins. Means that we get to try more things out. I wouldn't share accounts with more than one or two households though.

rbe78 · 04/11/2020 14:48

I prefer Netflix, but if I had to choose between Amazon and Netflix it would be Amazon, because of all the other Prime benefits - free next day postage, Amazon Music etc. Got Now for GoT, cancelled it soon after as we didn't end up using it - it has the occasional really good thing, but not enough for it to be your only service.

AriettyHomily · 04/11/2020 14:49

Netflix

SoddingWeddings · 04/11/2020 14:55

Neftlix.

As a PP alluded to, I have Prime which I share with my mate who pays for Netflix (multiuser account) which I also use. I share Disney+ with him and my extended family too.

beautyboxaddict · 04/11/2020 15:26

I have all 3 and Disney+ but utilise the grey area referred to above where we share with MIL & DSD so I’m not paying for them all. I prefer Netflix but it does depend what you’re interested in and what you might have already watched.

InFiveMins · 04/11/2020 15:29

I prefer Now TV, followed by Netflix.

MummytoCSJH · 04/11/2020 15:42

We have netflix and now tv for kids and sky movies. If you get a now tv stick for the tv you have access to all of the on-demand apps through it along with the packages you decide to buy.

AliasGrape · 04/11/2020 15:50

We have all of those! I think I’d probably choose now tv if I had to pick one at the moment but that’s just because we’ve got a few things on the go on there right now. Over all/ all time Netflix has probably been the best.

Prime is good there’s a few older things I used to love that I’ve been rewatching whilst up with a newborn in the night - Parks and Recreation, Cougar Town, The OC. I also liked Life in Pieces on there. Like others have said though it’s annoying that there’s a lot you still have to pay for and I find it weirdly hard to find things on there.

ShakeaHettyFeather · 04/11/2020 16:02

Amazon had a lot less than I expected - most of the films anyone has heard of (not straight to dvd cross) and series you have to pay for. But worth it for The Expanse and rapid Amazon delivery - however much I try to use smaller suppliers, Amazon's ability to provide eg a new shower when ours died, in 24 hours, counts for a lot.

Recently got Netflix which has a decent bunch of films but not all the series I was hoping for.

Note people can use Netflix on 4 devices so worth chatting to friends and seeing if one can set it up at your house... We have 4 accounts - Friend, Friends kids, Me, My kids - and pay friend a bit for it.
