I loved it: binged watched all the way through!

I looked up Anna Taylor-Joy which then led me to The Miniaturist - and loved that too.

It was a brilliant way to avoid the madness of our election for a few days!

Yesbutisittouching · 31/10/2020 04:37

Loved it. Watched it with the family. My DD is now wondering why we let her give up playing competitive chess 😂

AndAllOurYesterdays · 31/10/2020 21:28

I had serious clothes envy watching this. I liked it, but didn't love it. Some of the characters seemed a bit thin. But amazing how they made the very niche hobby of competitive chess exciting and accessible.

Chickenandrice · 02/11/2020 15:59

Loving this too

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/11/2020 16:01

What age is it suitable from? Dd is 8 (9 this month) - too young?

Foxglovesandprimroses · 02/11/2020 16:05

I'd say too young - there are some adult themes that run throughout. Am considering for DD12

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/11/2020 16:05

Ah ok thanks.

Bamboo15 · 02/11/2020 16:06

Loved it! Hope there’s a second series.

FingersCrossedForAllOfUs · 02/11/2020 16:09

I’m enjoying this too, it is amazing they have made a series out of chess! I like the costumes too.
I don’t think there will be a second series because it says limited series on Netflix.

Teenageromance · 02/11/2020 16:11

I loved it and although the ending was a bit predictable, I really was cheering on the main character so didn’t mind!

cheesecake864 · 02/11/2020 17:38

Absolutely loved it ! Completely binged the series and was upset when it finished.

The main actress was so beautiful.

cremuel · 02/11/2020 17:45

I loved it too, although she was a bit of a Mary-Sue. Couldn’t really understand why everyone loved her so much when she was pretty horrible to most of them. I thought it was also a bit unrealistic how little sexism and discrimination she faced. But it was a lot of fun.

iklboogeymum · 02/11/2020 19:10

Really enjoying this. I suppose maybe the lack of overt sexism thing was because it was the 60s and things were starting to move forward a bit more?

IsaInTheLift · 06/11/2020 17:03

I'm about halfway through it, love it though agree with a PP that Beth isn't always very nice. She comes over as thinking she's better than everyone and is often pretty rude/dismissive. I get that that is supposed to show how clever and special she is, but, meh. Find Alma Wheatley an interesting and more complex character!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 06/11/2020 17:37

Loved it, watched it all last Sunday into Monday morning, did struggle at work the next day 😂

the80sweregreat · 06/11/2020 18:02

Only on episode three but I like this. I suppose she has Aspergers and that's why she can't relate to anyone who isn't like her? She seemed to like the girl in the care home and anyone the same as her , but those other girls she really struggled with.
They only wanted to know her when she started to become a bit famous. She is also very tolerate of her adopted mum.
There was a true story film of a young girl in Africa who made it to the chess finals in Kenya or somewhere and I said to Dh I bet. America makes a similar drama!
There have been a few female chess grand masters , but mostly it is men that dominate this competition.
I was taught by my brother the rules of chess aged nine but it's a mystery to me really! I haven't got a analytical brain!

IsaInTheLift · 06/11/2020 19:04

I did wonder if she is supposed to have Asperger's but somehow didn't come to that conclusion. Maybe it becomes more obvious as the series goes on.

the80sweregreat · 06/11/2020 19:10

I just think that when she imagines the chess boards in her head is how a maths prodigy would see the pattens in numbers.
She can't relate to other people or why they don't understand the rules like she does. Her upbringing in the home hasn't helped though and she is clearly wary of people so she seems cold and unfeeling because of this as well?

IsaInTheLift · 06/11/2020 20:18

Yes I think I got the impression she was cold because of her upbringing more than anything, and struggles to relate to the girls at school because their lives have been so different and she is much smarter! I don't think she struggles with anxiety or sensory issues the way many people with ASD do (parent of a child with Asperger's here, so perhaps guilty of comparing her to my DS, though I'm well aware "if you've met one person with autism... you've met one person with autism"!) ... though perhaps her substance abuse is a way of dealing with those aspects.

Davros · 07/11/2020 00:04

I don't think she has Aspergers. There probably won't be another series because it's based on a book. The Queen of Katwe is a true story I think. I loved both

JamminDoughnuts · 07/11/2020 17:27

her mother was a mathematician, she wrote maths books, and was also suffering with her mental health.

Thingybobbyboo · 07/11/2020 17:34

I understood Beth’s issues with personal relationships to be related to early trauma and loss. I loved the series and just finished watching!

JamminDoughnuts · 07/11/2020 17:39

i have two more episodes

RozHuntleysStump · 07/11/2020 20:52

I thought it was exceptional. Really enjoyed it. Well acted, well written. Just a perfect little drama.

the80sweregreat · 07/11/2020 21:12

The acting is very good and the sixties vibe is very realistic.
