I used to love this as a child and it's now being repeated everyday on Sky Arts ( Freeview channel 11). Some of the episodes are still so good. I saw "Flypaper" yesterday which was fantastically creepy. It's on at the moment but each episode is on several times a day.

I live Tales of the Unexpected!!
I managed to watch them all on Sky, proper binge watch. Some of them are really dared but I think that adds to the charm.
Flypaper is an excellently creepy fable, good one to scare kids re stranger danger.

FayKnights · 02/10/2020 13:35

I love not live Grin although in the current climate...

Housewife2010 · 02/10/2020 13:44

Watching "Fat Chance" at the moment . I don't remember it. I'm so pleased Sky Arts is on Freeview now.

I watched one about a cat reincarnated as Liszt the other day. Bonkers but brilliant. The titles with the music and dancing woman silhouette completely takes me back to childhood!

Loved the leg of lamb episode. And the man who made a machine that heard plants in pain.

zukiecat · 02/10/2020 14:00

I love watching Tales of The Unexpected!

Flypaper terrified me as a child, I only realised watching it as an adult that Louise was Bernadette Windsor who played Alice in the fantastic Come Back Lucy.

I love the Royal Jelly episode, and the one I can't remember the title of, but the landlady murders and embalms her guests.

iklboo · 02/10/2020 14:32

I remember when they first started and my mum said I couldn't watch them as they'd give me nightmares. Dad argued they wouldn't. I went to bed and they watched the first episode. The following week dad & I watched together and mum did something in another room while it was on (mind you, she had nightmares after watching Teen Wolf) Grin

mum2jakie · 02/10/2020 14:37

I let my kids watch Flypaper a couple of years ago. My husband said it was inappropriate 😂

I remember the Royal Jelly one too. That was really creepy!

notacooldad · 02/10/2020 15:11

After reading this thread I just watched flypaper on YouTube.
It was very good.

DustyMaiden · 02/10/2020 15:14

I’ll try it. Remember it as a child but can’t remember the stories. I also liked that horror type one, can’t remember what it is called but there would be a scream every time the adverts came on.

Hammer house of horrors

Girlyracer · 02/10/2020 17:04

I love them. Some of them are of a different time, bit sexist etc, but full of memories. Some really creepy ones. The 12 year old girl being kidnapped after the death of a local girl Shock.

Housewife2010 · 02/10/2020 17:15

Hammer House of Horrors is on YouTube. I love them. They have some very well-known actors in both series. Today watching "Fat Chance" episode of TOTU which had Miriam Margolyes and Sheila Gish in , the actor playing the doctor looked very familiar. I found out he was The Crowman in the original Worzel Gummidge.

Also the best and creepiest episode "Flypaper" is on again at 9.30 this Sunday morning. It's on YouTube too.

I liked Mrs Bixby and the Colonel’s Coat.

The original British Tales of the Unexpected were miles better than the US ones. For the later series it was all American stuff which was SIMPLY NOT AS GOOD.

Housewife2010 · 02/10/2020 17:53

I saw the Mrs Bixby story in b&w too as part of the Alfred Hitchcock Presents series. That was very good.

The leg of lamb one is brilliant!
There’s lots of famous faces looking very young.

DustyMaiden · 02/10/2020 20:09

@notacooldad Thanks I’ll watch that.

Isn’t Brian Blessed in that one? If so, worth watching just for him!

SerenityNowwwww · 02/10/2020 20:47

I loved that when I was a child. The dancing silhouette was weird though.

I remember watching them as a kid but DH had never seen them. We binged them all a few years back and loved them. Some are pretty lame but some are genuinely creepy. Worth a watch for sure.

FayKnights · 03/10/2020 10:02

Yes! A young not so booming Brian Blessed 😁

zukiecat · 03/10/2020 12:48

Has anyone seen the Hitler one?

I remember being gobsmacked at the twist in that one, don't see it come up very often.

Although the acting is a bit dire, it's pretty thought provoking

Thymeout · 03/10/2020 13:36

The earliest ones come from a book of short stories by Roald Dahl called Kiss, Kiss. Better than the TV adaptation, imo. My favourite is the husband who abuses his wife by always making her late. He insists on going with her to see her off at the airport for a long holiday with her dd. Just as the cab is about to drive off...he tells the driver to hold on, he's left one of his gloves behind... While she's left in the cab, fretting that she'll miss the plane, she notices the missing glove tucked down between the seats, obviously on purpose....(Now read on. No spoilers here!)

It's such a subtle story of a marriage.

mrsrobin · 03/10/2020 17:59

I saw it the other day - found it by accident! Really used to like it years ago and also found it very scary. I had forgotten all about the introduction with him in the chair - I think that adds to the spookiness! I love the dancing women but have no idea why she is there!

I think I watched The Umbrella Man which was very funny actually!
