Splinter group for those of us watching at the broadcast pace!!

There won't be any spoilers from me as I don't have iPlayer.

I have read the book and managed to forget a lot of it so also can't compare it (unless something refreshes my memory!!).

I was outraged by the ending.

That such an unpleasant man who had traumatised his son and made his wife' life a misery was given a "happy ending", as though a few trials and tribulations over a few days made up for the life time of bullying he had carried out.

Loathsome.

Typical example of trying to convince women and children that men dont have to behave well and be socially conscious.

And the self delusion that such a mean spirited male would end up with the wonderful Sofie Gråbøl is just further evidence of men thinking they get a free pass.

It should be shown to young girls as a warning of the type of man never to get involved with.

I did wonder if albie was gay. Glad Douglas accepted him

Blimey! Did we watch the same program?
PimlicoJo · 12/10/2020 17:21

Pabloescobar I agree!

MajesticWhine · 12/10/2020 18:54

I didn't see Douglas as a bully or mean spirited. He was very pernickety and quite limited by his own uptight attitudes and also quite annoying. But not a bully.

augustusglupe · 12/10/2020 21:15

I agree MajesticWhine
I liked Douglas, I felt for him and if anything I found his wife bullying and quite cold. I couldn't bear her in the end and I'm glad he found someone who liked him for who he was.

purpleme12 · 12/10/2020 21:49

I hate it
I hate the story and I hate how the story went and I hate how they broke up

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/10/2020 22:25

So wife had enough

They go in their travelling trip

She goes home after son runs away to travel alone

Hubby mets a woman he gets on with while searching for son

He has a semi heart attack. Wife rushes back to him

Seems to get on

Then get home and split up

He finds his woman from other hotel

CherryValanc · 12/10/2020 22:48

I've just caught up.

I have to agree to some extent. Man goes through life not having to adapt thinking everyone else needs to bend to his way. Realises he was wrong too late and does too little to make amends. Gets happy ending.

Mind you, I did find the part where he gave her entirely, Jane's memory box pulled at the heart strings.

Same.

I far preferred Douglas to the wife who was very superior acting. D was just a bit of a stick in the mud. But he always had been. I felt for him with Albie as a child, we don't all know how to behave with children. He was doing what he thought Albie would like. The mum was the unempathetic one who undermined Douglas.

stumbledin · 14/10/2020 19:16

Well haven't changed my mind. Only wish (which wouldn't happen because it was written by a man) that "hte wife" had got to think and made a speech like "the wife" in Life did last night.

Go Alison!

I didn't see anyone bullying anyone. I thought that they were just ordinary people bumbling through the massive emotional and practical challenges of life.

I liked it and thought it was no less poignant for being middle class. It's not a crime. I thought it was sympathetic to all three of them.

musicalfrog · 19/10/2020 00:00

I thought the actor playing young Douglas was excellent at portraying TH's younger self! Really got the mannerisms.
