The Witcher - Am I just too thick?

Watched the first two episodes of this last night (for the second time). At some point I’m going to understand what is happening right? Or am I just going to spend the whole time pausing it asking my husband “so what timeline is this?”

I had this issue with the Netflix show Dark. It got to the point all the big reveals meant literally nothing to me and I gave up 5 episodes from the end. Sometimes I think shows try so hard to be clever that they actually don’t make much sense in the end.

MotherOfChaos28 · 23/09/2020 12:46

I was hoping it would be like Thrones and gradually get easier to follow. Although that dumbed itself down so much that I didn’t want to follow it anymore so the effect was the same haha.

This might help! It does jump about a lot but you'll get the hang of it. Stick in there 😁

I had to read episode summaries along side watching it to keep up haha, it's the way it moves between time that threw me, it's hard to keep track of that in a fictional non period programme!

VirginiaWolverine · 23/09/2020 13:10

It makes no sense until you know that

MILD SPOILER THAT MIGHT ACTUALLY MAKE YOU LIKE IT MORE

the main characters' stories are happening in three different timelines. And the first episode is just an introduction, and nothing to do with the rest of the series.

cctvrec · 23/09/2020 13:22

What @VirginiaWolverine said.

You can tell this when you get certain not so obvious hints are on screen. Such as child brother and sister royals in a scene yet we already know that we have seen one or both as adults. It is confusing until it clicks and then it's easy to follow. It is well worth sticking with it I think.

ThatDamnScientist · 23/09/2020 13:25

Season 2 when it finally arrives is all going to be on the same timeline. I would definitely stick it out!

Student133 · 23/09/2020 13:26

It is badly done tbh, I picked up GOT straight away, and I've played some of the Witcher games, but I cannot for the life of me work out what's going on 😅😂

MotherOfChaos28 · 23/09/2020 13:40

I will definitely stick with it out of sheer stubbornness haha. @VirginiaWolverine that helps a lot thanks.

Try it with the subtitles on.

ShellsAndSunrises · 23/09/2020 13:48

I loved it, but was baffled until it clicked into place.

I've also developed a soft spot for old Henry as The Witcher Grin

LindaEllen · 23/09/2020 14:04

Definitely carry on with it. It can be a bit confusing but I found it clicked into place eventually for me. I have watched it twice, and I picked up on a lot more the second time!

MotherOfChaos28 · 23/09/2020 14:04

@TastelessBracelets I was debating learning some Polish to see if that helped 😂😂

VirginiaWolverine is right - I googled and found out about the timelines and got them sorted in my head and it all suddenly made more sense and then got to the episodes that cctvrec mentions with minor characters at different ages.

I followed west world - even series 2 only getting mildly confused near end with their twisting time lines - so I think it was badly conveyed to viewers in early episodes.

Someonesayroadtrip · 23/09/2020 14:08

Yes it took me a few episodes until I got in, love it now, watched it all again and read the books now 😂

I kind of follow it as the young princess looking for him is the main story and everything else is behind or current to that time line.

Sitdowncupoftea · 26/09/2020 00:31

It is good once your a few episodes in to it. Problem now is i can't wait for series 2.
