I couldn't see a thread on this so apologies if there was one and I missed it.

Apparently this will be on before the end of the year, filming has just finished

GBBO

Yay!! Something good on the tele to look forward to for a change

Just delurking to say 'wet freezer juice' - bleurgh!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 14/10/2020 21:29

I can't believe I didn't like Lottie at the start - she's a delight!

Sorry that Sura left, though.

Soupcon · 14/10/2020 21:57

[quote ILoveYou3000]@WhatWillSantaBring I believe, from an article I read years ago, they contestants submit their signature and showstoppers before they're even selected. They have to make one of them for their audition.

And I'm sure the article linked on here about this year says they have access to practice as much as they wanted.

I imagine it may go flat on occasion as it's probably quite tiring filming every two days, practising in between and being away from loved ones. Plus there's no escape, would definitely feel a bit much for some people.

gbbo.take-part.co.uk/info/rules

The rules of entry specifically ask that recipes you submit as part of your application are original to you and haven’t been copied or transcribed from any published source — I don’t know if the same rule applies to recipes submitted for the challenges, but it seems likely? I do think those have to go in well before filming starts. Didn’t Dani/Danny the medic from several seasons back say they did in her blog?

Soupcon · 14/10/2020 23:07

I just looked to see if Dani’s blog was still up, and it is.

All of her posts about GBBO are very interesting for behind the scenes stuff — you get some travel expenses, but have to pay for all your home practice ingredients yourself — but this is the one I was thinking of:

bakingastherapy.wordpress.com/2012/10/21/bake-off-confidential-bittersweet-adventures-in-a-tv-show/

This was when GBBO was still BBC, but she says all recipes for all bakes apart from the final had to be submitted before filming started, and had to be original, as some of them would appear in a GBBO cookbook published alongside the series and you’ sign over your copyright when you agree to be on the show — no royalties to contestants.

HeddaGarbled · 14/10/2020 23:19

I’m enjoying it. It seems more light-hearted this year. Last year, with Steph getting star baker nearly every week and then totally falling apart in the final was brutal. This year, the contestants seem more emotionally robust, and coped with the disastrous brownie round with humour. I also like that it feels wide open at the moment: I can’t predict the winner.

MoonJelly · 15/10/2020 01:57

It sounded like the way to succeed in the brownie round was to use a less sweet topping like lemon, salted caramel or nuts. With a perfectly baked brownie, of course.

Mydogisagentleman · 15/10/2020 08:21

Sad to see Sura go, I’d have preferred to see the back of Lottie

WhatWillSantaBring · 15/10/2020 08:30

Thanks for the link @Soupcon - that's a really good article, very informative and really puts me off ever applying! Though I do like to think I'd be able to ace the brownie round...

MaggieFS · 15/10/2020 08:31

I'm enjoying it. I was surprised the Brownie round was so crap, but there you go. I do agree the standard doesn't seem as high but as pp have said, I suspect it's a combo of who was available plus the environment they're in.

I like Matt and think he works well. I also liked Sandi. Neither pairing as good as Mel and Sue were but things move on.

It's feel good tele for me. As long as there is no one truly irritating like Tom Allen then I'm happy to watch it and I don't get too worked up about the lack of time and stupidity of some of the tasks.

ppeatfruit · 15/10/2020 08:56

Blush Yes Captain Noel did say that! I got it wrong Grin

Like Hedda I'm enjoying it too.

Poor Sura. I wonder how long she had practiced? Or maybe the oven in the tent was different to the one she had practiced on.

SugarButterFlour · 15/10/2020 09:13

Sad to see Sura leave, but I'm glad Lottie is still in. I appreciate her dry, self-deprecating humour.

CeibaTree · 15/10/2020 09:40

I like Lottie too! I do wonder on these threads why it's always the pretty young girls that people take an instant dislike to - it happened with Ruby Tandoh, and Candice Brown off the top of my head and they were no more or less annoying than any of the other people in their rounds.

The standard of bakers doesn't seem so high this year - some of the showstoppers have looked quite scruffy in comparison to recent years, but it's probably as someone mentioned upthread, there was a smaller pool of people willing to isolate in order to take part this year.

CeibaTree · 15/10/2020 09:41

*young women, not girls!

ppeatfruit · 15/10/2020 09:50

Cieba I've noticed the same on these threads but I put it down to a touch of the green eye . Grin

I like Lottie and I liked Ruby too. Candace was a bit heavy with the lippy and nail varnish for a baking show.

But I don't want to start a bunfight !!! geddit bunfight !!!

BrieAndChilli · 15/10/2020 11:17

I nearly applied last year! My colleagues at work convinced me to do it, I started the application but I didn’t have loads of photos of things I had made except cakes and didn’t have time to do it properly so I didn’t bother. I have however taken photos of everything I have baked during lockdown....

Yes I like Lottie and Candice is my most favourite contestant ever.
Soupcon · 15/10/2020 11:39

I agree there's often been a nasty, misogynistic attitude to younger, conventionally pretty or glamorous female bakers. I think someone this year said something implicitly unpleasant about how Paul Hollywood would give his first handshake of the season to a pretty, young woman, thereby removing all merit and focus from whatever it was Lottie had actually baked and placing it on her appearance. (Especially as Lottie does not appear to suffer from the delusion that PH is a deity.)

I liked Ruby's late-teenage don't-give-a-fuck attitude, and Candice's decision that PE teachers when away from the touchline get to be a glammed up as anyone -- Ruby, the 2018 runner up was just as glam, but seemed to attract less online side-eye, ditto Manon. And Nadiya Hussein is insanely pretty, and much the biggest obvious success story of any of the winners that I'm aware of. I loved Chetna and Steph, but I think Mary Anne, from 2011 (the woman who always did historical takes on everything) is my all-time favourite contestant.

CaptainMyCaptain · 15/10/2020 12:09

The only thing I've got against Lottie is that hair all over the baking. I say that as a long haired person whose hair drops out all over the place, I would tie it back.

Whitney168 · 15/10/2020 12:11

@FawnDrench

Noel seems to swing between appearing somewhat bored with the whole shebang and going completely OTT.

He's making some very snide comments about the judges at times.

Matt and Noel not working for me at all. Don't mind either of them separately, but am not liking them together.

Noel also seeming really weird about the show this year - 'no-one over 40 eats bread', 'eating is cheating' and some other bits. Sorry Noel, if that is your feeling, I really think you're on the wrong show!

bibliomania · 15/10/2020 12:21

I'm amused by Noel's comments - think they're a nicely ironic counterpoint.

ppeatfruit · 15/10/2020 12:42

Soupcon Yes Nadiya is amazing! I'm so glad that the BEEB took her up, her programmes are lovely . (If a little heavy on the sugar for me!)

It seems if you're pretty, like Sura too, and wear a scarf you don't get the snideyness.

Ref. Lottie's hair, it's very fine, she puts it up in a pony tail, apart from greasing it down or having a buzz cut, how could she stop her fringe from getting loose? She likes a long fringe obviously. It's so not a big deal.

lynsey91 · 15/10/2020 14:26

I like Lottie but her hair drives me mad. Dangling over everything she makes is bad enough but she keeps touching it and pushing it back all the time and then touching her ingredients/bakes. It is revolting.

I could not stand Candice. Found all the eyelash fluttering and simpering face pathetic and annoying. It certainly was not down to any jealousy as I don't particularly think she is attractive. Nadiya is very attractive and I really like her

IntermittentParps · 15/10/2020 14:40

I liked Candice! Nadiya was an obvious telly natural from the start. Never liked Ruby though; I just thought she was dull. She's written about food for the Guardian since and IMO hasn't got any more interesting.

There's plenty of men contestants I've not liked too – David who won it for starters.

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/10/2020 14:58

Candice made me spend £100 on a dress!
She wore it and I loved it so much I bought it.

ppeatfruit · 15/10/2020 15:07

Men don't tend to be remarked on so much on here, someone like Rowan who's interesting I suppose, I liked Liam. They tend to be a bit boring, I do like the Mark who won Starbaker ,he;s got a nice smile , but it's a bit difficult to understand him.

IHave She MADE you spend £100 Grin Grin
