We have 14, 12 and 9 year old and detective series go down particularly well for after dinner viewing. 9 year old has watched some with us but dips in and out as some more suitable than others. 14 year old is a particular fan.

Successes have been:
Sherlock
Poirot
Death in Paradise
The Mentalist
Lucifer (was prob a little close with sex/drug references but was enjoyed so I guess our bar is lower than some peoples in what they can watch)

CSI and Law and Order have only been dipped into and haven’t really struck the right note.

We have access to:
Virgin
Netflix
Amazon Prime (willing to pay for something decent)
Now TV entertainment
Disney plus (though cannot imagine anything there)

Brokenwood is a good call.

Shakespeare and Hathaway, might be a bit twee but has good mysteries.

Veronica Mars not sure if it's being replayed anywhere.

Criminal - mini-series on Netflix - only 3 episodes (but have 4 countries and have watched all of them) - it’s brilliant!

I think some of the themes in Granchester are quite dark and its easy to forget because of the almost costume drama aspect of it. Horrible family behaviour and things. It bit like Endeavour.

I was wondering Lewis. I think the later episodes were a bit more "adult".

Has someone said Miss Marple. I get confused because I think they have been made two or three times and can never remember which series is better than the other.

The later Midsummer Murders are so camp maybe them?

Must be difficult, and may be wrong, but think there is quite a jump for what a 9 year old might be okay with, but even a 12 year old let alone a 14 year might think they are a bit bland.

I never watched Johnathon Creek but maybe that.

Or Foyles War which has crime and a bit of history.

(I know that on Virgin they regulary re show old series on Drama, Alibi and one other channel.)

What was that TV series based on books written by JK Rowlings. A bit more modern but maybe a bit grisly. Is it called Strike?

IntermittentParps · 24/07/2020 15:06

stumbledin, I don't disagree about Granchester dealing with dark/difficult themes (poverty, domestic abuse, capital punishment, Sidney's own guilt and trauma from the war...).
There's certainly no graphic sex/violence/gore, though.

Yes, Strike. Maybe a bit grown-up for the younger kids, although I watched it ages ago and don't have perfect recall of the detail. It's a good watch for adults though.

Itv 3 has plenty of child friendly old detective shows.

Annasgirl · 24/07/2020 15:43

My DC (2 teens 13 and 16) and I love, love, love "How to get away with Murder (Netflix)". Might be a little much for the 9 year old as it is set in a US college with a law professor (but loads of criminals and mysteries and a detective).

TinyMetalBirds · 24/07/2020 15:46

Ooh, if they like Poirot maybe the Peter Wimsey series, although I don't know if it is available on those platforms - and I guess it might seem a bit slow nowadays.
I used to like Columbo at that age.

Greengrapes1357 · 24/07/2020 16:43

My 11 year olds liked Vera but not midsummer murders (they said it was too old fashioned).

TheSunIsStillShining · 24/07/2020 17:45

SWAT, Castle, Bones

mogtheexcellent · 24/07/2020 17:52

The coroner, new tricks, the menorca files. I also like the last detective.

Foyles war would be good for the history.

12 and 15 year old DDs here. As per other suggestions, they have enjoyed Vera, Poirot, Shakespeare and Hathaway. A couple of episodes of Lewis went down fairly well, but Midsummer Murders got a thumbs down. ITV ran a short series of Van dear Valk mysteries recently (set in Amsterdam, but with British cast and in English) which was also a hit. I've been wondering about trying Broadchurch with them next.

thegreylady · 26/07/2020 19:46

Can you still get Due South? That would be great for children.

menofharlech · 28/07/2020 06:12

Dds are 10 and like death in paradise, Murdock mysteries, poirot, miss marple (especially the Geraldine mcewan ones). Some Sherlock Holmes. Sometimes miss fisher.

Pipandmum · 28/07/2020 06:47

Not sure if much is appropriate for ypur younger kids but for adults I like Walter Presents on All4 - mostly foreign drama. Just finished watching the Polish series The Teacher which was excellent.
With my teenage daughter I am watching ER and Buffy the Vampire Slayer!

Bones has gruesome autopsy scenes but most of the living people are child compatible.
