An Indian take on Married At First Sight?

Nadia is so lovely. What a dick that guy is!!

I have no words for Aparna 😂

ChaiTea1 · 23/07/2020 21:47

Ahh, I binged through this, this week! I thought it ended really weird? I’m hoping they’re going to do more! I wanted to know what happened to the rest of the couples.

It reminded me and DH of how we met and now my brother is going through a similar ‘match-making’ process right now Grin

Fishypants · 23/07/2020 21:54

I loved the series!

It is hilarious that the matchmakers first words to new clients are "lower your expectations". Grin

(SPOILER) Akshay dumping Radhika after the show ended...hmmmmmm. Methinks much more going on internally for Akshay.

did no one else think it was a bit racist? I heard quite a few comments about finding a 'fair' girl

Yeah my in laws are Punjabi and tbh they are quite racist, but mostly against black people/Muslims rather than the skin colour of people from their own community. But it's quite common I think, it has connotations for caste for Hindu people as well as common or garden white supremacy. Doesn't make it right but it didn't surprise me. Colourist prejudice is pretty common.

'A Suitable Girl' on Amazon Prime is very nice too... based on the stories of 3 Indian girls looking to get married. The "matchmaker" lady is one of the girl's mother in that show.

ThatsItNow · 23/07/2020 22:18

I think this is a good article on the Netflix series... also mentions how colourism and class is normalised in Indian arranged marriage settings.
@catscatscatseverywhere I don’t think he gets married! It’s a pre-engagement ceremony and apparently the engagement and the wedding did not go ahead. His match seemed lovely, much to good for that Akshay, he is so critical of all the girls.
Wow, really? Did I miss something in episode 8? I know there was this ceremony when Vito Corleone gave his future daughter in law the jewellery etc. Maybe it’s for the best. This girl said she wants to pursue her career and Akshay is really hopeless.

catscatscatseverywhere · 24/07/2020 12:37

Sorry, *her, not his. By saying Vito Corleone I meant Akshay’s mum.

jay55 · 24/07/2020 13:40

It really did end abruptly and I would get confused that they would add more and more people without resolving any earlier stories (even to say still single, married a white guy or something).

OMG binged it in 2 days. A lot of the bio data stuff was fairly true to life. Wanting someone with a degree, certain prospects, family situation etc.
I had an arranged marriage 😊 the stuff on paper is the first thing you look at before you decide to meet a person so it’s pretty important! Then you get to the whole chemistry/liking etc once you meet. It was very traditional for two people who aren’t necessarily that traditional.
But that was just like the show. All these people were wealthy educated not super religious Western ( a lot like me and DH) and yet they wanted to go through what seems like a fairly archaic process.
I found it fascinating and cringey in equal measure. Aparna was annoying but she was nothing compared to Akshay and his Psychotic mother! She had all the clothes ready for a future DIL and when he said he wanted a wife exactly like his mum it was really a very unhealthy relationship and the trope of overbearing Asians mums and their boys is very much a thing But this was almost a parody!
He was a complete oddball, didn’t seem to have his own thoughts or emotions at all but when you have someone shouting at you that your brother can’t have a baby because you won’t get married it prob messes you up Hmm

Faffandahalf · 24/07/2020 20:46

It annoyed me we didn’t her any resolutions but I guess ‘Sima from Mumbai‘ didn’t want to be seen as a total failure if none of her matches succeeded.

titnomatani · 25/07/2020 00:35

@Bateshotel- colourism is so deeply entrenched in the Asian psyche that it's not worth challenging as you'd be banging your head against a brick wall. I know of a progressive, cultured, educated lady who'll fight for equality in all its guises but when it comes to wanting a DIL for her son, she wants a 'pretty' one. Pretty= tall, slim, FAIR skinned. It's shit.

AliceinBunnyland · 25/07/2020 17:46

Aparna is awful

Sims is matching people based on spreadsheets of age, height and star sign but then days "it will happen when it's destined to happen"

But I like when she said "When I think of Aparna, I get tired" Grin

I've only watched episodes 1 and 2

Houndabouttown · 25/07/2020 22:21

A suitable girl was very emotional to watch. Surprising how Sima is just the same as all the other mums in when her own daughter is involved. Having to give up her job. Awful.
