How is portraying that if you're a victim of domestic violence you'll get dealt with by police like this??! It's infuriating me. I've worked as a detective in DV for years... this is being portrayed so far from the truth as to how things actually happen I genuinely think it's damaging.
I think it's actually irresponsible of Corrie to portray it like this.

I just said to my DH, why do they always have to make the investigating officers such arseholes.

Mapril · 04/05/2020 20:01

In these type of storylines I mean

Tanfastic · 04/05/2020 20:01

They always manage to make the police look like dicks. ConfusedHmm

bobstersmum · 04/05/2020 20:01

I've not watched it yet, but I suppose at this stage they don't know she's a victim?

JayAlfredPrufrock · 04/05/2020 20:02

I was hoping that isn’t how someone would be treated.

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 04/05/2020 20:03

Totally agree. Why bother going to so much trouble to work with women’s aid for the storyline, get it all frighteningly realistic and then balls it all up by having the police act like this. Makes a total mockery of the whole campaign.

LoopyGremlin · 04/05/2020 20:03

At the moment there’s no evidence of the DV that the police know of. She has made no claim of self defence. I agree with you that this could put people off but hope that evidence will start to mount and she will be treated in a more sympathetic manner.

Tanfastic · 04/05/2020 20:04

No they don't but the investigating officer is not even letting her speak. Talking to her like shite. Interrupting her and putting words in her mouth. Being an arrogant arsehole. Dh is retired officer. He's fuming 😤

I'm fuming with the producers. What a bunch of dicks.

totiredtocare · 04/05/2020 20:05

@bobstersmum even so, you have a person seriously injured in a domestic setting.. you would never speak to the suspect or jump to any conclusions like this. It's awful.

For the record I think Yasmine and Geoff have both been played superbly.

Yes there is- Geoff’s neck pishing with blood couple with Yasmeens call saying she killed him is evidence. But I realise that’s not what you mean.

ALovelyBitOfSquirrel · 04/05/2020 20:08

Absolutely. I cried when watching him abusing her. I don't think I've ever hated a fictional/soap character so much. Ever.

BakedCam · 04/05/2020 20:12

It is a dreadful portrayal of an investigating officer. This is where it worries me in these types of storylines. While the soap audience does bring matters home and raise awareness, it will ultimately fall down. This is it.

With hindsight, I suspect it is to show the harshness of his the system treats victims of abuse. She would not have been interviewed in that state.

smiften · 04/05/2020 20:20

The police in Corrie are always rubbish, Craig being a prime example.

pawsforawhile · 04/05/2020 20:22

I also work in a specialist dv role and yes infuriating.

Makes me so angry. People who work in dv are usually empathetic, knowledgeable and supportive. Not disbelieving arse holes

Clawdy · 04/05/2020 22:34

I agree. At first I liked the kindness the two younger policewomen showed to her, then as soon as the questioning began, it was dreadful. Aggressive and unpleasant, quite unnecessary manner when dealing with what was obviously a shocked and frail woman.

bobstersmum · 05/05/2020 08:18

Just watched it, what a horrible nasty cow! I said to dh there would be absolutely no need for anyone to be so nasty irl, it just wouldn't happen, what were corrie thinking?

KerryMucklowe · 05/05/2020 08:29

I've been ranting about this all week.
It's always the same old story -we will spend ages watching the victim portrayed as the baddie and everyone turning against her, she will go to jail and then someone will eventually find out the truth and it will
all be forgotten and never mentioned again.
Why didn't they show Yasmeen cracking and ringing the police and Geoff being charged with domestic abuse charges ?
Yasmeen could do the freedom programme and counselling.
This way women who are actually going through domestic abuse would see there are real options available to them.

MrsEsss · 05/05/2020 09:11

I came on here to comment the same on the Corrie thread. Investigating officers don't speak to people like that. Even people who are highly likely to have committed heinous crimes. That is not the way to get people to talk to you and tell the truth. It's really, really bad especially after all the hard work that's gone into the storyline.

Happygirl79 · 05/05/2020 09:15

Very irresponsible of Coronation Street to have the police portrayed so badly
This may ultimately undo all the intended good of the coercion storyline as true victims would not report to the police after seeing this

ALovelyBitOfSquirrel · 05/05/2020 09:48

I'm hoping that somehow the recording of that night will be found and then they will see what he's like and that it was self defense. I shouldn't watch. It's just making me cry.

BakedCam · 05/05/2020 09:56

Agree with @Happygirl79 it us very irresponsible to portray police in such an aggressive and hostile manner. I know Women's Aid were advising on the storyline, which makes me wonder more....

No way either, I'm sure would the investigating officer and the defence solicitor be having a conversation at the fucking vending machine.
