Binge watched it yesterday and loved it. Emotional, passionate and two really great leads. Thoroughly recommend it (so long as you don't mind lots of love scenes). Cried lie and felt bereft when it finished.

OP posts:
Wbeezer · 24/05/2020 22:54

I wonder if that was something Daisy felt uncomfortable with?

Sparklingbrook · 25/05/2020 00:12

I read somewhere they had an 'intimacy coach' and they had to say what was ok and what wasn't, so that's probably it @Wbeezer.

Davros · 25/05/2020 00:20

I've got two words - Tur. Gid.

Well made, great acting, shit story, horrible characters who barely interacted, miserable

Sparklingbrook · 25/05/2020 00:27

I don't understand the two words bit?
Reading some of the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes it's a bit Marmite.

Haggisfish · 25/05/2020 00:36

Turgid!Grin

Sparklingbrook · 25/05/2020 00:38

Ooh. That's one word. Grin

Haggisfish · 25/05/2020 09:42

Yes -I see the confusion now!

Davros · 25/05/2020 10:32

Sorry, I'm being flippant and annoying!
I agree that Marianne looks like Anne Hathaway and Connel has a look of a young Alfred Molina sometimes

Sparklingbrook · 25/05/2020 11:04

Even those that were less than thrilled by the storyline agree that the two leads did a fantastic job of portraying it.
I assume they will be fighting the job offers off after this.
People are saying he could be the next James Bond but I don’t know about that.

MrsJamin · 25/05/2020 12:03

I loved bingewatching this, I was really put off how old all the sixth formers looked though - I looked up one of Connells friends and he was 32! Utterly ridiculous casting, why on earth couldn't they find actual real teenagers? It made it feel very strange at the beginning. I found the storyline quite similar to La la land in the end, which is also oddly satisfying in its ending. The Instagram account @connellschain is hilarious. I'm not obsessed or anything though, happy not to read any interviews or the book itself. It was good escapism for now, and well acted by the leads.

Sparklingbrook · 25/05/2020 12:14

Would it not have been a bit eww to see actual teenagers doing those sex scenes?
32 though is pushing it a bit!

I thought Jamie looked about 16. 🤷‍♀️

That Instagram account is funny. I fear for Paul Mescal’s safety when lockdown ends 😂

LadyEloise · 25/05/2020 13:04

I thought some of the sex scenes were gratuitous.

I agree with you Davros re the series - "..... great acting, shit story, horrible characters who barely interacted, miserable."

I left out your 'well made' because of the gratuitous sex scenes.

Davros · 25/05/2020 13:12

LadyEloise how about "well made gratuitous sex scenes"? I agree that the sex scenes felt unnecessarily long and detailed. I don't think they needed to be so full on

Wbeezer · 25/05/2020 14:00

They reflect the importance of sex in the book though.

Sparklingbrook · 25/05/2020 14:07

I thought the sex scenes highlighted that they actually communicated really well in that way. Even though the pair of them couldn’t talk to each other without misunderstanding.
And it wasn’t like that with other people?
I realise I have too much time on my hands and in normal times I wouldn’t be thinking much about it.
Pics of Paul Mescal out and about today smoking. Bleurgh. Poor Daisy.

Broondug · 25/05/2020 14:43

Hands down one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. The acting is beautiful. Their intimacy and connection with each other is incredible and in some scenes the atmosphere is so electric I feel it too. Il be sad when I finish it. Think il try the book.

RedHelenB · 25/05/2020 15:01

Daisy smoked too didnt she?

Sparklingbrook · 25/05/2020 15:18

Her character did but not sure about the actress?

RedHelenB · 25/05/2020 15:31

So there would be no problem with smoking during the series, so no poor Daisy

Sparklingbrook · 25/05/2020 15:33

Only if she was smoking purely for the scenes that needed it and he was a smoker in RL. 🤷‍♀️

RedHelenB · 25/05/2020 16:15

Book refers to a lot of smoking so I would think if you could nt cope with the other lead being a smoker you woykdnt audition.

covetingthepreciousthings · 25/05/2020 20:58

Does anyone know how much longer the episodes will be on BBC iplayer for? I think I want to watch it again Blush but maybe try watch it all in one go like as if it were a film but maybe I'd have to split it over two nights.

But.. I don't want to realise it's timed out on iplayer and not be able to watch it again!

Although I would hope Netflix may pick it up after?

covetingthepreciousthings · 25/05/2020 22:48

I just saw a clip of Russell Brand on Instagram talking about it, and I think he's spot on that it's been so popular because it does capture those first times of falling in love, and that the people who are loving it are probably people who are older reminiscing.

Sparklingbrook · 25/05/2020 23:23

I saw that too, he said he doesn't watch the sex scenes. I agree that it might appeal more to people who have been through those experiences and look back at their own teenage relationships.

On Iplayer it says it's there for 10 months.

KeepWashingThoseHands · 27/05/2020 22:10

Very late to the party but I've found my people :)

Just binged watched it in a couple of sittings and was left with an odd set of emotions to process. Initially I was hooked as the main characters in the earlier episodes very much reminded me (in different ways) of my experiences at school and uni and the intensity of a first love.

Then I got traumatised by all the abuse/exploitation of Marianne in the later episodes and due to watching it late at night felt like it ended on a cliffhanger I wasn't happy with, whereas actually it's just a natural progression of their relationship.

Wow. I'm looking for easy watching and ended up with more internal reflection than I expected!

Likewise White Lines. Maybe being in lockdown is intensifying everything as its making me very nostalgic.

What's everyone watching now?
