What not to wear - why has it become so nasty?

I felt really angry watching it tonight. All these women bearing their souls in front of millions of people and then being told to p* off because they hadn't made it into the programme. It was a really interesting programme this evening, about the invisibility and depression engendered by menopause, but this new format where extremely vulnerable women expose themselves to millions of people on TV and then get nothing from it seems really exploitative and unpleasant to me. Am I being over-sensitive?

green, who can really get away with green?
Good web page BTW, my style test results say I could do better though

motherinferior · 07/10/2004 14:49

I can do green, but not heels. And although I do quite like brooches cannot face the holes DD2 would pull in my clothes.

suzywong · 07/10/2004 14:51

madame, you sound like an Ewardian vision of elegance

lou33 · 07/10/2004 14:53

stalk....

posyhairdresser · 07/10/2004 14:54

Susannah should stop the gratuitous mauling/groping of other womens' breasts which IMO is demeaning and exploitative.

I would prefer this programme if it managed to have some regard for the dignity of the participants.

bundle · 07/10/2004 15:02

suzywong, the green is a sort of mossy colour, not my thing really, although motherinferior did email me a link recently to a lovely pair of shoes in a lighter shade of green..mmmmmm

welshmum · 07/10/2004 15:04

But the participants know exactly what they're letting themselves in for. I far prefer this new version, at least they're making their own videos and sending them in instead of all their friends and families getting together and nominating them and T and S turning up out of the blue. I much prefer this way of doing things - it's great telly.

motherinferior · 07/10/2004 15:13

And the great thing about T&S is they do appreciate the bodies of women who've been terribly embarrassed about themselves till now. They tell dames who've been wrapping themselves up in huge jumpers to get a decent bra and flaunt their assets. Which can, IMO, only be a good thing.

welshmum · 07/10/2004 15:14

I agree. The bra thing is a private bug bear of mine. I have to stop myself from telling strangers that they'd look 100% in a good bra.

JoolsToo · 07/10/2004 15:19

these women put themselves up for selection so should have no gripe if they don't get through.

thought the subject, ie the menopause, was a good one but it sounded like everyone will be doomed to depression and confidence knocks - this is sending out the wrong message - yes its true for some but not all - I was lucky enough to sail through the menopause at 36 with no symptoms at all and think the programme should have been a bit more balanced in this respect.

with regard to the fasion - I still think they put them clothes that are too small and too tight fitting for some of the body shapes.

Mind you, they all love the experience in the end. It may look horrid but when a newspaper tried to find unhappy customers they couldn't find any. Unlike Changing Rooms!

JoolsToo · 07/10/2004 15:29

welshmum - I agree - in previous serious the 'subject' is videod in secret and sometimes in their underwear without their knowledge I think that is completely out of order!

presumably they give permission for the film to be shown but still!

oliveoil · 07/10/2004 15:30

I love this programme. What is the thin one called, is she Trinny? She had a v nice stripey dress on last night. I would like her wardrobe.

krocket · 07/10/2004 15:36

i thought it was great, lovely to see that one so pleased and with her confidence back. Suzannah has lost tons of weight, she always looks fab. Agree re: property ladder clash aloha - but when the heck is going on with sarah beeny's stripy highlights?!

JoolsToo · 07/10/2004 15:38

perhaps Sarah could get a developer to sort her hair out for her

krocket · 07/10/2004 15:39

it's bloody awful - looks like a yts trainee has done it

JoolsToo · 07/10/2004 15:52

@ krocket

posyhairdresser · 07/10/2004 16:47

I think that just because the subjects are happy overall with the £2k and makeover is no excuse for mauling women's breasts and taking their knickers off forcibly on camera...do we have to make people pay for their makeovers via public humiliation?

I love other aspects of this programme but the humiliation makes me feel sick.

Lonelymum · 07/10/2004 19:13

I have to say I don't see it the way you do posyhairdresser. We all know what T&S are like but many of us would still put up with their comments to be shown what looks good on us (and to get £2000). I unashamedly like their rudeness. It makes me laugh. I mainly watch the programme for their comments, to see if I agree or not. I think they are well meaning at heart unlike some other makeover programmes, no names mentioned, where the aim is obviously to be outrageous and to shock.

Slink · 07/10/2004 19:21

I think they are great you have laugh anyway next week looks fab these women know what they are getting themselves infor why oh why do they kick off...thats the best bit though..i'd love £2000 to spend on clothes

Flik · 07/10/2004 19:29

I love this show, especially last week with all the Mums. I know what you mean about the comments but i don't they are out of line apart from the fact that's it's on the telly. There was a couple of cringe factor momemts last week. But I got loads of tips and will definatly take some of it on board. I recently made a big change by getting a new funky hairdo which has made all the difference to the way I feel about myself. Am now in the process of new wardrobe and chucking out the cargo pants. I think the pair of them look great and give good advise.

acnebride · 07/10/2004 19:39

i've cracked! has anyone tapes of last night's property ladder and either last night or last week's T&S? would happily pay double the postage! so much for watching less tv

JoolsToo · 07/10/2004 20:15

think some of Susannahs choices are a bit questionable at times!

NomDePlume · 07/10/2004 20:26

I think they are great. Yes they are a bit brutal, but a lot of these women are sooooooo drippy and set in their ways that they need a damn good talking to ! I do think that pulling that poor woman's kecks off was a bit much.

The women ALWAYS look fantastic at the end, though.
