Did anyone else watch the programme last night? I liked how it showed the lead up up to the competition from both the beauty queen and protesters point of views. Also, how the beauty queens still looked glam today, and the protestors were interviewed in their homes, ie. looking ordernary (loved that one protestor, in her 70s, had pink in her hair).

However, the beauty queens commented how feminism meant they had the freedom to choose to do beauty shows, but they didn’t ask the protestors if they considered this point of view.

Interesting, though provoking programme.

I've just finished watching it. I was fascinated by all the women in it. Miss Grenada going on to work in politics, the fab lady with pink hair who had been a midwife, and the South African contestant who went on to be her communities answer to Dionne Warwick. I bet they've all lived such amazing lives. I felt quite emotional watching it - not sure why 😁

I thought it was a very well put together programme, respecting all sides, and not judging. That was a nice touch showing us what happened next.

I think the point was that opportunity to pull oneself out of poverty or discrimination shouldn't depend on how pretty one is.

And I've noticed that a lot of reviews/comments keep saying that Miss Grenada was the first woman of colour to win, whereas Miss India, Reita Farria won in 1966.

Was this on BBC? Can't find it online.

Miss India, Reita Farria won in 1966.

I remember her winning - what a beautiful girl she was.

BackforGood · 20/03/2020 21:16

Yes, it was on BBC on Mon 16th - is on iPlayer.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 20/03/2020 22:19

Thanks - I'll catch up on that.

It was really interesting to see it from both sides, especially how the contestants used it as a spring board to better themselves with careers in politics and journalism, but I was cringing when they kept referring to the contestants as “girls” all the way through, they were adults.
