Am wondering if this is going to be totally cringe making.

What if the British Isles had been invaded by people from Africa, and they were now the rulling class.

If any one watches let me know whether I should catch up.

(In saying cringe making just wondered if it is going to be so woke it will just be silly, or whether it will be thought provoking)

Your ignorance is quite unbecoming. Nought and Crosses is a hugely successful novel and has been around far longer than any 'woke' ideas

Supersimkin2 · 05/03/2020 15:26

I'm looking forward to it, but hoping that it's good drama ie not too age-3-clunky with the agenda.

It's BBC so I'm not expecting much bar them assuming the viewer is a fervent racist.

stumbledin · 05/03/2020 15:29

It maybe a hugely sucessful novel but as we all know the BBC has turned many a sucessful novel in total garbage!

I read this book years ago, I'm talking at least ten years ago. I also vaguely recall driving the 60mile round trip journey to Stratford upon Avon, on a mid-week evening with my dodgy old style satnav to navigate my journey. I can't remember if the play was any good.

But I'll happily watch this to tonight.
Thanks for the heads up.

unique1986 · 05/03/2020 21:07

Is this like Romeo and Juliet?

Supersimkin2 · 05/03/2020 21:28

Five short kids' books, not a 'hugely successful novel'. Made it into a TV survey, no national book awards, at one time part of the state school pre-teen curriculum re Civil Rights.

Such a good premise, don't you just pray the BBC don't produce nowt but a sledge hammer aimed only at racist whites.

SegregateMumBev · 05/03/2020 21:33

Watching now. Wow it’s good!

PrettyPity · 05/03/2020 21:36

Looooove it!

TheSpottedZebra · 05/03/2020 21:38

The books are excellent and I'm liking most of the adaptation, but I'm really struggling with the architecture, landscape and the light. I can't suspend my disbelief that this is the UK.

MrsLCohen · 05/03/2020 21:40

I’m enjoying it, I hope it is all on iPlayer to watch

TheSpottedZebra · 05/03/2020 21:40

One of the things that struck me in this (and not the books) was the lack of Asian people - as of course if our colonial past was different, then migration patterns would be too.

AnyFucker · 05/03/2020 21:44

.

PrettyPity · 05/03/2020 21:50

Especially loving the mispronunciations of names. The brown skin plaster. Everyday things some of us face.

AnyFucker · 05/03/2020 22:08

How come only eps 2 and 3 are on I player ? Confused

Iloveicedtea · 05/03/2020 22:12

I looooooved this book when I was a teenager. I think she's a fantastic writer. I saw the play in Hackney many years ago and I loved the show !!

MrsBooks · 05/03/2020 22:20

I've not read the books, but watched it tonight and really enjoyed it. Will definitely be watching the rest of the series.

implantsandaDyson · 05/03/2020 22:23

I enjoyed it, I only read the first book recently. My 12 year old loves the book so we're watching it together, she enjoyed the show. It took her a bit to get into it, she's a right fussy one and originally there were quite a few eye rolls about changes etc but by the end of the first episode she was sucked in Grin.

maxbabi · 05/03/2020 22:27

Really like it
Thought provoking

bellabelly · 05/03/2020 22:38

My boys have read the book but I haven't. They said the tv show is a bit different from the book. I loved episode one tonight - lots of clever touches, eg the skin tone plaster. And there was also a billboard for a perfume ad or beauty product etc with a black model. It struck me that you rarely see that in the UK and it surprised me. I like to think that I'm quite aware of race and related issues (I used to teach in London and boys in my tutor group said they were routinely stopped and asked questions by police officers) but I think as a white woman, there's probably so much that I take for granted.

JustDanceAddict · 05/03/2020 22:42

I thought it was done well but I read the book about 10 years ago. Watched w DD - 17.
Loved the subtle touches like with the plaster - I didn’t even think about plaster colours until a black friend pointed it out to me!

Gilead · 05/03/2020 23:15

Read the books years ago, loving the adaptation.

icelolly99 · 06/03/2020 00:23

Read the books very recently and so has my teenage daughter. We're looking forward to watching this together

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 06/03/2020 10:03

Great clothes.

I was paying much attention to the plat last night, because of the corona threads, but it was really good visually.

QueenOfTheAndals · 06/03/2020 10:32

I thought the costumes were great and I loved seeing the afrofuturism of the London skyline and buildings.

Ulysses · 06/03/2020 10:56

It's on much to watch list. Teenage DD studied it in English last year so I am hoping it's something we can watch together.
