Can you guys help me find a new favourite ?

Looking for a blockbuster/easy watch

Meaty but not too cerebral.

Generally I like action, rom com, bit of Sci fi at times, horror at times, psychological thrillers...

The usually fare I think

Mainly an 80's/90's film girl as that's when I was mostly going to the cinema or renting videos

Don't want something very political or biopic that's too hard to follow as concentration not great. But still like a cracking storyline.

Nothing "arthouse"
Or up its own backside (I occasionally like this kind of thing but not in mood right now)

About to pop a pizza on and crack open a lager with it...that kinda vibe.

But I tend to end up watching old favourites most of the time.

I have :

Netflix
Prime
BBC iplayer
ITV hub
All4

The 5 app doesn't allow me to watch 5 programmes live but if there's anything on the catch-up app point me to it.

So...hit me with your "new" (anything since 2000 counts) favourite reliably enjoyable movies I could watch tonight.

The ones I keep falling back on are:

Scream franchise
Final destination franchise
Back to the future
Indiana Jones
Star Wars
Terminator
Mission impossible
Gremlins
Brat pack movies
Die hard
Men in black
Dance movies (dirty dancing, flash dance, footloose)
Jurassic park
Mn hated Grin (titanic, Forrest gump, pretty woman, mrs doubtfire)

Actors I like
Tom Cruise, Julia roberts,
Cameron Diaz, Anna Kendrick, Michael b Jordan, John cusack, Joan cusack, Melanie griffiths, Jennifer Lawrence, robin Williams Sad, Will Smith

Hope that gives a good idea of my tastes (and possibly a laugh at my expense Grin)

Blade Runner ( & Blade Runner 2049)
Dune
Ghostbusters (original version)
Top Gun (Tom Cruise)
(Hiding in the back saying... May Poppins, Sound Of Music, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang)

BigFatLiar · 22/02/2020 19:22

Groundhog Day

Graphista · 22/02/2020 19:23

Yes they're all things I've already seen so thanks for replying but I'm after something new that I haven't watched before so preferably films made since 2000.

Prisoners on Netflix was great.

BigFatLiar · 22/02/2020 19:34

OK newer ones...
The Martian
Predestination (Based on a short story)
Passengers
Seat 25
Gravity

Graphista · 22/02/2020 19:46

Prisoners looks good although jake gyllenhall movies can be a bit "up their own arse" I couldn't get on with nightstalker at all but I loved source code.

Predestination - seems 12 monkeys type thing? Or minority report that kind of sci fi based on great short stories by Philip k Dick and Isaac Asimov type thing? If so definitely up my street!

The Martian isn't available to me unfortunately.

Seat 25 sounds interesting although is it very much a "British" film with a nod to more arthouse type feel?

Gravity I won't watch on principle as I am an avid tess geritsen fan and she was royally screwed over on this.

Thoughts on snowpiercer?

Argh! I'm going through lists on amazon prime and instead of adding new films I'm adding ones that are newly added to their content but which I've already seen but which I love...

This is what I always end up doing!

If you like Tom Hanks (as do I) - Bridge of Spies (Netflix possibly?)
Stan and Ollie - yes it is a biopic but seriously good. (Prime)
IT (2017 update) - you appear to like scary movies. (Prime)
King - about Henry V, but not at all dry. (Netflix)
The Two Popes - Anthony Hopkins for goodness sake! (Netflix)
Birdbox - A bit of a dystopian film with Sandra Bullock but you've probably seen it - (Netflix)
If you don't mind subtitles - Guilty (Netflix)

Will you come back and tell us what you decide to watch?

starsinyourpies · 22/02/2020 20:03

Late Night (Amazon Prime). Emma Thompson, easy viewing!

Seekingadviceagain2020 · 22/02/2020 20:04

Prisoners isn’t up it’s own arse.
If the subject matter doesn’t upset you then it’s very watchable!

BigFatLiar · 22/02/2020 20:14

Predestination is based on 'All You Zombies' by Heinlen
Passengers is a romance on an ship full of colonists to another planet where the suspended animation chamber fails on someones unit and he wakes with about half the journey still to go
Seat 25 is a british film and lacks the holywood touch
Haven't tried Snowpiercer but it looks like some people have had language issues with it
What about Downsizing

Graphista · 22/02/2020 20:22

Prisoners is looking promising...

Off to stick pizza on!

Keep posting as always good to add to watchlists

Will update with what I ended up watching and what I thought

Musical...
La La Land
Sunshine on Leith
Back on the sci-Fi
Interstellar or Shape of Water
Sound of Thunder (again based on an old short story)

Graphista · 23/02/2020 16:15

Watched prisoners it was good, absorbing and challenging.

Somewhat ironic in the casting of Terrence Howard as a "pacifist" and I'd have liked to see more of Viola Davis because I LOVE her she's an amazing actress. But I loved Maria Bello in it too.

Could be a tough watch for some people I agree

rosegoldwatcher · 23/02/2020 17:21

Viola Davis - I agree! Have you seen Widows (a bit silly but entertaining) or The Help (sublime!)?

Graphista · 23/02/2020 19:10

Sadly I've seen neither as yet I want to. I want to watch "fences" too but feel I need to be in right mood for it.

Love her in "how to get away with murder" "Lila & eve" "knight and day" "eat pray love" "law abiding citizen" "svu"

First saw her in "the guardian" and thought she was 'one to watch' very charismatic and powerful actress
