Cilla The lost tapes

This brings back childhood memories of the songs, shows and a different way of life, was interesting to see how she was in the right place at absolutely the right time. Takes me back to those times where we didn't question anything ( or I didn't ).

Not a fan of the later shows Blind date and the cheesy Surprise Surprise.

The portrayal of Cilla always belies the forums verdict on her arrogance and entitlement

Some arrogance did come over, in some of her words though. Insisting she was an early feminist and all about girl power before anyone else was - hmm. And saying she wasn't sure she wanted to sing "Alfie" and making out she did it under her own terms, not Bacharach's - not sure about that one.

eggandonion · 19/02/2020 23:07

She had a great voice, as did Lulu. I don't think I appreciated that at the time.
The appearance in front of the queen while pregnant was interesting.

Bluerussian · 19/02/2020 23:11

Cilla was and is great. Like every other human being, she sometimes makes mistakes, so what? She has many friends and is generally well liked. What you see is what you get.

CoolCarrie · 20/02/2020 00:57

I don’t think she had a great voice at all, too shrill for me, not a fan , she got lucky knowing The Beatles and the Liverpool connection , but she certainly knew her worth at a time when women were badly paid.
It’s interesting that it was the Cher version of Alfie that was used in the film, not Cilla’s, despite it being an British film.

crosser62 · 20/02/2020 01:16

Awful awful voice so bad I have to switch it off if ever it comes on, like fingernails down a blackboard.
Lots of stories regarding her awful behaviour towards people.
Lost tapes should stay lost.

Bluerussian · 20/02/2020 05:46

When Cilla first emerged in the early sixties, along with the Beatles et al, her type of singing - very Liverpudlian - was all the rage. She had a good voice and with different training could have varied her style but she stuck with what she knew and what her fans liked. The male Liverpudlian singers did much the same most of the time with lesser voices and they were liked. Times change.

She wasn't awful to loads of people but she was a bit awful to a couple. Well she was young and feisty and management often exploited talent, she showed a maturity beyond her years. The press take snippets, take them out of context and blow them way out of proportion. Haven't we always seen that and are still seeing it? Bobby was good for Cilla but definitely a bit long suffering at the beginning, before they married and had children - it paid off though, they had a long and happy marriage.

I don't expect people I like to be perfect, everyone has feet of clay; it's not fair to them as well as ourselves to make icons out of people, it always ends in disappointment. I'm not perfect and don't have the pressures of being a high profile person.

ArriettyJones · 20/02/2020 05:48

I always thought she couldn’t sing.

Clawdy · 20/02/2020 08:34

Those high notes were very strangulated. I thought her rude arrogant behaviour was in her later years, especially to airline staff, it became a bit notorious. Hadn't realised her version of Alfie wasn't used in the film? Didn't even know there was a Cher version!

Agree with the comments above - she couldn't sing for toffee! She had a powerful voice, but no quality at all. She was lucky - right place, right time - and probably shagged the right people. (The permissive society was just beginning)

JillAmanda · 20/02/2020 08:41

Horrible voice.

ArsenicNLace · 20/02/2020 08:50

Awful voice. I always think of her as the singing crow.

Not a nice person either. I remember reading a article by a journalist interviewing her. She recounted a story where a fan came up up to them whilst the interview was ongoing. Gushing over Cilla. Telling her what a big fan she was and how they were exactly the same age with the same birthday. The herself apparently 'looked her age' whereas Cilla has all the advantages money can buy & looked good for her age. She then proceeded to call to those people surrounding them saying how no body would believe they were the same age and humiliating the fan in the process.

Nasty woman.

Susiesoap7 · 20/02/2020 09:35

Loved the sixties songs, but never liked her

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 20/02/2020 10:07

Cracking pair of legs though!

Almost as good as Paul O Grady's Lily Savage's..... Grin

ArriettyJones · 20/02/2020 10:12

Speaking of legs. Anyone else remember this cringe fest? I really have never understood any aspect of her supposed appeal. I’m dying inside again now having found and checked the clip.

Clawdy · 20/02/2020 11:10

It was on last night's programme.

Clawdy · 20/02/2020 11:17

Just the Cilla bit, anyway!

HollowTalk · 20/02/2020 11:30

When I saw the thread header I was hoping that the tapes weren't audio tapes.

ArriettyJones · 20/02/2020 11:36

t was on last night's programme.

Oh sorry. Maybe someone tried to lose all these tapes on purpose?

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 20/02/2020 11:38

I enjoyed the programme, for the nostalgia, I grew up hearing her music playing on the radio, spent Saturday evenings in the 70's watching the Cilla Show, Blind Date saw me through the years of dating, early marriage and kids being born. We saw her perform in panto in 2010 towards the end of her career. Whatever she was like in private she certainly had a wonderful career.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 20/02/2020 13:14

Blimey Arrietty - I'd forgotten what an ugly bugger she was!

< feel mildly ashamed because we are all the way God made us etc, plus Am No Oil Painting Myself >

Actually I think Barbara Windsor had better-shaped legs - Killer's were just long.

Lily's legs are good - but not as good as Danny La Rue's!

CoolCarrie · 20/02/2020 21:32

I don’t think “she shagged the right people “ at all, to be fair to her. She was in the right place , at the right time and made the most of that, and her thin talent.

CoolCarrie · 20/02/2020 21:35

And Burt Bacharach was/ is a total perfectionist, she had to sing Alfie over and over until he was happy with it, not her. The Cher version of Alfie is over the end credits.

CoolCarrie · 20/02/2020 21:40

Dusty Springfield was the finest British female singer in the 60s by a mile , Cillia wasn’t in her league

Ginfordinner · 20/02/2020 21:42

Cracking pair of legs though!

No, I think they were long and thin, but not at all shapely.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 21/02/2020 09:51

Seconded!
