Anyone else watching? What do you think? Has anyone got experience of being or working in a prison?

Going to prison was always one of my worse nightmares as a child, and still pretty much is. I am surprised at the level of "chaos" in episode 1 (series 2).

Just watching it now on catch up. I had a suspended sentence and now work for the probation service so find these type of documentaries very interesting.

bugbhaer · 18/02/2020 17:49

What do you do for the probation service, and do you enjoy your job?

I think I'd be eaten alive in place like that "First Nights" wing.

Yes it seemed very chaotic. I was quite surprised

I have worked in prison education for 20 years. Have worked at that female prison for a short time but mostly in young offenders and adult male prisons. It’s a job like no other - some days hear something that makes me want to sob and other days can’t stop laughing with my learners

bugbhaer · 19/02/2020 17:06

What are the key rules for getting on ok in prison? I have heard ex-prisoners (male) who described how they decided to have nothing that could be taken from them - physical or emotional.

I liked that mentor person. She seemed like she was really helping people

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 29/02/2020 22:51

I noticed on the EPG it said episode 2/2. Are there really only two episodes per series (didn’t realise this was series 2) or is there another one next week?

purpleme12 · 01/03/2020 13:07

There's an episode on Monday so that will be 3 in total

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 01/03/2020 13:39

Thanks! Look forward to it, I have found this series very insightful and after it’s finished I will seek out the first too as I seem to have missed it the first time round

Sunshine1239 · 01/03/2020 13:43

In terms of getting on the number one rule is don’t borrow or buy what you can’t pay for

Prison value of vapes etc can be sky high and if people get in debt with other prisoners this escalated quickly

Papergirl1968 · 04/03/2020 22:13

As prisons go, it seems to be a very good one, with the focus very much on rehabilitation. Was astonished to see prisoners are even allowed pets!
I always had the attitude of bread, water and hard labour, but this makes me rethink.

Papergirl1968 · 04/03/2020 22:14

I meant to add, I wonder how reoffending rates compare with traditional, hardline, less progressive prisons.

purpleme12 · 05/03/2020 22:38

That would certainly be interesting to know

I don't understand why they said Kelly couldn't go to live with her sister?

Papergirl1968 · 06/03/2020 11:59

Not sure. Maybe they thought the sister wasn’t going to be the best influence. Or I did wonder if she was looking after the children. I think they said they lived with their dad but maybe the sister helps out with childcare.

I volunteer for the Independent Monitoring Board. We visit a prison and monitor standards. We are always looking for new members.

Sertchgi123 · 07/03/2020 07:24

I’ve found this series compelling viewing but oh so sad! There’s so many damaged women in this prison, in fact that seems to be the reason for most women being in prison. It’s deeply disturbing.

CockCarousel · 07/03/2020 08:12

I have been to prison on remand*. The first time was Holloway (terrifying) and the second time a more provincial one.

Holloway was pretty much you would imagine prison in your nightmares - bullying, coercion (for sex, possessions), violence kicking off for no reason. A general feeling of utter despair.

The other prison I went to was much different, newly built and staffed by locals who were mostly new to being prison wardens,(ie. not jaded by years in the system). Zero tolerance for bullying and this was upheld by the women, not just the wardens. If I'm honest, it didn't really feel that different to boarding school once I'd got over the initial horror that I was in prison. My main fear was my parents finding out, also frantic about my cats alone at home, (they weren't left unattended for long).

Male wardens in both, which shocked me, (so many vulnerable women to prey on). I certainly don't think more male bodies should be in womens prisons (Karen White for example). The vast majority of female prisoners are inside prison partly because of poor judgment when it comes to men. The co-d is more often than not the boyfriend who has been coercing her to commit crime.

There were lots of women in there for non-payment of council tax too.

*am now reformed, obvs.

CockCarousel · 07/03/2020 08:21

Ooops sorry was so busy spaffing on about me that I didn't address the actual television programme Blush. I meant to start watching it a few nights ago, so thanks for reminding me Smile.

purpleme12 · 07/03/2020 13:42

That's very interesting

Did the people who didn't pay their council tax bill not have enough money? Or did they just spend it on other things? Just cos can't see what that does to help people if they're in there cos they couldn't afford it

CockCarousel · 07/03/2020 17:02

Non-payment because they were on the breadline purple.

I noticed all the women would talk about missing their children and were (understandably) most focused on that. Far more than men are in the same position whose main concern is usually their wives/partners because they miss sex/their cooking etc.
