Grantchester - almost like a different show!

I saw this last night by mistake as I recorded it rather than Deadwater Fell.

Seems like a different show since I last watched it.

Different Vicar (but I suppose if you are offered a starring role in the Christine Keeler Story you would happily give up a cosy english countryside detective series).

What was the end to the Sidney storyline? Did he give up the church for true love?

Presumably this new series is not based on the original books.

I like that they look at some of the issue from that time. A bit like call the Midwife.

But somehow the storyline of the detective and his wife (I think she is great) is very similar to the one in Endeavour. But maybe that's right. So many women at that time were feeling the frustrations of being expected to go back to the kitchen after WWII.

Was going to post this on the thread about series going on to long, but cant find it!

I still love Grantchester... The guy who plays Leonards boyfriend is also in White House Murders too.
My lovely late DP took me to Grantchester for my birthday a few years ago. We went in the church and walked round the village.

stumbledin · 18/01/2020 19:53

I hadn't realised Granchester was a real place!

So did Sidney give up the church and get married?

No. He left to go and find himself after his lady walked out.
Grantchester Village

PaddingtonBearHardStare · 18/01/2020 20:43

No he didn't he fell in love with a black woman involved in the Civil Rights Movement and left for America with her when she went home

Elderflower14 · 18/01/2020 20:48

Sorry... Got confused. He left earlier then came back then went to America.

stumbledin · 19/01/2020 00:05

Goodness - I must have stopped watching quite early on.

So all that moodying about because he let the love of his life get bored waiting and went off and married somebody else didn't mean that much.

Someone new and obviously much more engaged in life made him forget and move on.

They certainly do seem to bring in issues contemporary to the time.

I think Mrs Maguire is the real star of the show having to look after all those hapless men. And learn to accept Leonard

I love Leonard. The actor plays the character so well.

IntermittentParps · 19/01/2020 17:01

I haven't started on this series yet but wasn't too keen on the previous one (the first one with not-James Norton). I miss JM and didn't massively like this new guy. The motorbike was a bit of a cringy trick to try to make him seem rebellious, I think, whereas Sidney's war trauma and guilt, and his drinking, seemed more real.

I do love Leonard though, and the housekeeper character, and the village/countryside/clothes and hair, etc, so will probably give the new series a go soon.

Second episode last Friday, recorded it and just watched it. Much better storyline tonight, Will is growing on me, and I like the burgeoning romance between him and the reporter.

Elderflower14 · 20/01/2020 05:40

One of my huge crushes Dominic Maffham is in the new series (won't spoil in case people haven't caught up yet)
First saw him in Kingdom and thought he was gorgeous then!

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 20/01/2020 20:36

I quite like the new chap. Sidney's endless misery was getting a bit wearisome and I'm glad he's gone off to find a little happiness (or be miserable elsewhere).

Clawdy · 20/01/2020 22:13

And Sidney in the books was totally different! He and Amanda were just great mates, nothing more, and he married a German woman who appeared in an early book ( and also the tv series) and they had a baby and were very happy.

TheWoodsareDarkandDeep · 20/01/2020 22:23

I missed James Norton too much and stopped watching. He is astoundingly good in Christine Keeler though

Elderflower14 · 20/01/2020 23:39

Bookies have stopped taking bets on JN being the new 007'

stumbledin · 26/01/2020 21:16

I watched the last episode to see if it really was that different.

Poor Mrs Maguire. Let down by another husband.

What principles! Giving back the ring, leaving all her jewelry behind, packing her bag and going to a B&B / hotel?

I am sure Leonard will realise something is wrong and rescue her!

Clawdy · 26/01/2020 22:33

Have to say, that husband always seemed a bit too good to be true! That sex scene at the end with Will and the reporter was rather odd.......up against the wall!

icelolly99 · 11/02/2020 14:54

Anyone still watching? Good episode this last one....

stumbledin · 11/02/2020 14:59

I watched but am afraid I was too upset to find out Mrs Maguire has not moved out. And I was counting on Leonard to help her make a clean escape!

But yes, it was a disturbing episode. Though did wonder whether in 50s the system, including the police, wouldn't have covered up someone seen as the pillar of the community, and somehow discredited the young lads as they were "wrong 'uns".

Was last nights the last of the series? Is that the end of Grantchester?

stumbledin · 18/02/2020 13:58

Have just checked and the episode this week will be the last.

The assumption is there will be a series 6 but I suspect they will wait to see the viewing figures. They've sort of demoted it haven't they? It used to be on a sunday I think, but 8pm on a friday is a bit of a dead slot.

Sorry I think that info is wrong! Whichever papers said that 14th was the penultimate must be wrong. They are showing an old Vera on Friday!
