Hays Travel on BBC Breakfast this morning

I have just watched Naga Munchetti give the owners of Hays travel ( they bought out Thomas Cook ) a hard time (in my opinion) by pressing them to state exactly how many customers who their shops. They clearly didn’t want to or didn’t know and she should have just let it go .I think she forgot that they should be congratulated rather than ‘grilled’
I generally can’t stand BBC breakfast because of the interviewing but my husband watches it.

How dare a journalist try to get an answer to a question. Hmm

It's something I would have been interested to know too, given that one of the main criticisms of the Thomas Cook model was that their high street stores were losing money hand over fist.

Changeembrace · 16/01/2020 08:24

An interviewer asking questions? Perhaps even probing questions?

The cheek of it!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/01/2020 08:25

Surely someone representing their company on tv should have a decent grasp on the figures/stats/profit etc? Shame on them for not being able to answer.

Ilikewinter · 16/01/2020 08:25

I didn't see the interview but Hays have taken over a large TC unit in my town, hardly ever see anyone in it, im sceptical that they will be able to keep all of the stores open.

Kazzyhoward · 16/01/2020 08:26

Naga is one of BBC's worst sneery, self important, wannabee slebs. I barely watch their joke of a breakfast program now. I won't call it news because it isn't.

As for the subject matter, why should Hays, a private business, not have the right to confidentiality re sensitive business information??

If it were a govt quango or recently nationalised etc., then obviously there's a legitimate public interest.

Kazzyhoward · 16/01/2020 08:27

Surely someone representing their company on tv should have a decent grasp on the figures/stats/profit etc?

Why, it's a PRIVATE business?

VivaDixie · 16/01/2020 08:30

There is more to this story than offering them congratulations.

I don't know the full details but their motives weren't entirely charitable. Apparently they took a hefty amount of commission from subsidiary companies, so a lot of people lost out due to their 'charity'

As I say I don't know the details but they don't convince me at all and I would have liked to know the answer to the question too. Sounds like avoidance tactics to me

Juliette20 · 16/01/2020 08:34

by pressing them to state exactly how many customers who their shops

What actually was the question though?

Celticdawn5 · 16/01/2020 08:41

Just re read my post .
The question she was pressing for an answer was How Many customers use their shops. I just thought it unnecessarily combative but clearlY some of you are more informed about the background to it all.
It just particularly jarred me this morning and felt moved to post on Mumsnet.
I usually just shout at the TV

Piers Morgan interviewing is the worst though says she going off on a tangent

PineappleDanish · 16/01/2020 08:45

So the respondents just say "we can't tell you that, it's confidential". Instead they waffled on about how fantastic the staff are and how great they are for rescuing all those jobs.

Celticdawn5 · 16/01/2020 08:54

@Kazzyhoward
I think you are right. It doesn’t seem much of a news programme.

I used to work in travel and had a lot of dealings with hays. Im quite they haven't got a clue of their figures. Travel is a messy game Boone seems to have a clue what's going on. Also dealt with TC but do think it's shame what's happened.

But Hays be fine I'm sure because they've just swept up a large corner of the market since tc went down. Not sure how they will manage to keep all the stores open though.
When I worked in travel all the shops were hardly profitable at all it was all online.

Juliette20 · 16/01/2020 11:15

How Many customers use their shops

Ah, I see. Yes, quite a reasonable question. Sorry, I wasn't being an arse, but I genuinely couldn't work out what the question was meant to be from the typo in the OP.

CanYouSmellMyCharlie · 16/01/2020 11:25

Loads of typos this morning!!

Who's Boone when he's at home? GrinWink

VivaDixie · 16/01/2020 11:32

No idea but I am singing Hi Ho Silver 😂

plumcarpets · 16/01/2020 11:56

@CanYouSmellMyCharlie see what I mean about those that worked in travel... it's messy! Can't believe you've never met a Boone

Itstheprinciple · 16/01/2020 17:39

I agree with you OP. They had given plenty of other stats about their performance. Im not sure why she felt the need to keep hammering home the point. I imagine the footfall required to keep each shop ticking over will vary massively from place to place so I'm not sure what she was trying to show. As you say, they were supposed to be on as a success story, not an MP whose been up to no good when you would need to employ a more challenging interview style.
