Back tonight at 9pm! Smile

To be honest, as soon as she went on about being an Alpha - I thought hmm, let's see. Those who big themselves up like that normally end up in tears all the time.

Now me, I know my limitations!

Goldenbear · 08/01/2020 11:44

Yes, i appreciate pride comes before a fall but I think there is value in emotional intelligence and the problems in the world are largely caused by the macho, competitive culture demonstrated on this programme! It is certainly a pressure on boys and it's ashame.

Greyhound22 · 13/01/2020 03:17

They will focus on emotional intelligence too. That's where the ones that are massively physical and you think are going to pass fail. When they start being interrogated.

If you didn't watch last year a lad who was quietly spoken and didn't look old enough to be out on his own was one of the three winners (along with a woman) as although he did manage the physical stuff ok he was amazing when it came to being a prisoner and how to manipulate the captors.

I have mixed feelings about if women should be part of it - not because they can't do it but still - I'm uncomfortable with the one to one combat etc however last years 'mole' was Petra Malm who the others clearly had respect for and is amazing if you follow her.

ISeeTheLight · 13/01/2020 15:09

Never watched the show before, but an ex-colleague/friend of mine is on it this year. I'm watching open-mouthed as to why anyone would want to put themselves through that. Amazing to watch though.

hoteltango · 26/01/2020 22:03

Anyone still watching?

I was riveted by tonight's episode. Carla is just amazing.

Balibabe1 · 26/01/2020 23:09

Oh Carla had me in tears, what an inspirational woman.

And I’m not picking holes but I didn’t think Ant Middleton was SAS, he is a former soldier who served highly in various regiments. My understanding is Mark and new Staff Jamie are the only ex SAS members.

PennyRoyal · 26/01/2020 23:33

Ant was in the SBS rather than the SAS as well as the Paras and the Marines.

LochJessMonster · 27/01/2020 11:13

The undercover guy Jamie is the main reason I'm watching..

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 27/01/2020 12:30

I love Foxy but Ant is vile - he seriously assaulted a two police officers, one of them a female officer which is why he spent time in prison.

fishonabicycle · 27/01/2020 13:04

Bloody love this program! Nothing better than sitting on the sofa all warm watching them suffer!

hoteltango · 29/01/2020 21:09

There’s even less news about the SBS than the SAS. I remembered that the SBS were in a news story, but it’s taken me ages to even think up the right words for a google search. Just over a year ago, there was a ship that had been hijacked by some stowaways in the Channel. The SBS were sent in at night, they asked the captain to switch off all the lights, they fast-roped down from a helicopter and used night goggles. Captured all the hijackers, and the crew were safe. Probably took them less time than I’ve done to type this. Grin

I agree, fishonabicycle - comfy chair with plenty of snacks for me, rather than all that cold and wet.

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 29/01/2020 21:48

Oh goodness undercover Jamie really is rather marvellous isn't he 😲

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 29/01/2020 22:21

Sorry just on catch up - Carla is amazing

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 29/01/2020 22:48

Carla is a machine - totally phenomenal! I'm in awe and she seems like she'd be a good friend in real life too!

I've not watched previous series before so loving this as a newbie!

HeronLanyon · 29/01/2020 22:55

invisible you’ve got some fun on catch up then ! I also liked the bear Grylls’ french foreign legion series when he was pretty young. Full of awe for what they lit themselves through and what the ds have been through. Carla is amazing - like her a lot.

hoteltango · 09/02/2020 21:06

Anyone still watching? Final episode tonight.

I've been trying to make notes and I've got the following still in:

1 James
6 female
8 male
9 Kim
15 Carla
23 Eloise
25 Chris

I guess numbers 6 and 8 won't make it through.

burnoutbabe · 09/02/2020 22:06

Thought it such a shame 15 was removed for not running down the hill the fastest when tasks 1 & 2 she beat the other lady,

WellTidy · 10/02/2020 09:45

I really enjoyed this series, but I've really enjoyed them all! I was gutted that carla didn't progress beyond the final 4, as she did so well on the carrying your partner task and on the hill climbs. What a woman.

PennyRoyal · 10/02/2020 14:01

I agree, what an inspirational woman Carla is! Ex Olympian rower, Mother of 4, ages 40+ and beaten breast cancer. Amazing performance. I thought she should have passed (and Kim who was a mighty force too!). It exhausted me just watching Shock

hoteltango · 10/02/2020 20:26

I really did feel sorry for Carla. She was outstanding all the way through. But she did look almost wiped-out on her last exercise.

Of the two finishers, I did like James, but not so much Chris who clearly still had a lot of anger. But I suppose what the DS were looking for was that anger that could be used in a real-life dangerous situation.

I had watched some time ago a BBC(?) documentary series that interviewed some ex-SAS people, and made a note of what one of them said:

"You have to have control. But when it’s necessary, and only when it’s necessary, act with extreme violence, professionally."

I'm not sure Carla, despite all her strength and determination, could do that; but Chris possibly could.

Katinski · 11/02/2020 12:27

My dad's friend was SAS. He served in the killing fields of Borneo. They throw you out of the Services when you're 55. I'll always remember him coming round to mine after he'd signed on one week, despondent. "They only teach you how to kill people" was the comment that sticks with me.
When he died they gave him a fabulous funeral at Hereford.

invisibleoldwoman · 11/02/2020 12:36

I've recently discovered it. Watched all the previous series on catch up. Am reading Ollie Ollerton, Janes Fox and Ant's books now. Riveting. I love the emphasis on emotional and mental strength. Often there are huge muscle bound blokes who don't last very long and it's the quiet ones who finish.
