Did anyone watch this last night? I wasn't expecting much but was actually really impressed and I didn't see the twist coming at all!

I loved it. My husband bought it for me last Christmas and I hadn't heard of it but really did enjoy it.

Disillusioneddaisy · 28/12/2019 07:11

@WeirdPookah do you think at the end dan Leno knew the secret?

I thought it was very good. I didn't see the twist coming either! I was a little confused with the ending but now you've suggested Dan Leno might have known it makes more sense.

AutumnRose1 · 28/12/2019 10:38

HERE WE ARE AGAIN!

One of my favourite films.

They were born under the same star. Awwww. Friendship.

Bill Nighy replaced Alan Rickman for his role, I think. Not easy but he did a great job.

Lizzie is just the BEST.

Celticdawn5 · 28/12/2019 10:39

I read the book a while ago and it’s one of the few books that freaked me out and has stayed with me.
Obviously film not exactly the same .

Sparklybaublefest · 28/12/2019 10:40

I guessed the ending!

Disillusioneddaisy · 28/12/2019 11:40

Did she want Kildare to tell everyone she was the golem before she was hanged? I feel like she wanted the notoriety.

Loved it.

AutumnRose1 · 28/12/2019 12:00

“ I feel like she wanted the notoriety.”

Agree. Name carved in stone.

VivaLeBeaver · 28/12/2019 14:18

I saw the twist coming. Enjoyed it. Is the book good?

PrettyPurpleFeather · 28/12/2019 15:48

Kildare didn't give her the satisfaction of being known as the Golem. I didn't see the twist coming at all, I thought Avaline poisoned John Cree. Which was why Leno left the stage during the hanging scene & half heartedly called for a safety check. I reckon he doctored the mechanism so Avaline died for sending Lizzie to the gallows. Although he may not have known that Lizzie killed Victor, Uncle and all the others. It was good though, I really enjoyed it even though it was a bit graphic.

Disillusioneddaisy · 28/12/2019 16:25

Ooooh yeah I didn't think that about Dan Leno but now you mention it the safety check was half hearted and he seemed very happy for the show to go on despite the unscripted hanging! It was graphic but I like dark Victorian stuff like that

I think I’ve mixed up the “born under the same star” with the book, which I also recommend.

CoolCarrie · 29/12/2019 16:29

I know im being thick, but what was Lizzie ‘s motive for the murders? To be infamous? I liked it but to kill children was particularly awful, and it’s based on a real case, PD James wrote a book about it.

Disillusioneddaisy · 29/12/2019 16:37

@CoolCarrie yeah I did find the scene with the family very brutal and tough to watch. I think she was a messed up, badly abused person and yes she wanted the infamy. She wanted to show that women can do big and powerful things. She existed very much in a mans world and wanted to show she was a force to be reckoned with in her own right.

OP posts:
AutumnRose1 · 29/12/2019 22:26

@CoolCarrie

Lizzie is a fictional character.

As far as I know PD James wrote about the Ratcliff
Highway murders, not the Golem.

AutumnRose1 · 29/12/2019 22:29

One of the reasons I liked the film so much was that it was
Lizzie. To quote the female Moriarty in Elementary- “as if men had the monopoly on murder”.

CoolCarrie · 29/12/2019 23:53

I know Lizzie is a fictional character, but the murder of the family in the shop was based on The Ratcliffe Highway Murders featured in the PD James book The Maul And The Pear Tree.

AutumnRose1 · 30/12/2019 00:15

Carrie, I’m confused

You know the Ratcliff murders are separate real events

but still shocked that fictional Lizzie wanted to be a serial killer?

CoolCarrie · 30/12/2019 00:25

I’m not shocked, but serial killers tend to kill a type of individual; women, or men, or children, but Lizzie killed indiscriminately, no common theme , maybe she wanted to be a different type of killer. I am definitely going to have a look out for the book.
