Andrew Neil interviewing Jeremy Corbyn

Did anyone see this tonight? I'm a Labour voter but think this interview is going to really damage him. And ffs it's like he's lit by a 3 watt bulb - very flat, no passion there at all. I know people say he's passionate, but that's not showing here at all.

Totally agree, I think it was a disaster for him

pallasathena · 26/11/2019 21:44

Andrew Neil is an arrogant, belligerent interviewer who always looks to interrupt instead of asking intelligent questions. The BBC is using 'shock jock', interviewing styles in its reporting currently which just doesn't get to the heart of anything. It just promotes gossip and innuendo and mask these as discussion and debate.
It isn't!.
Expect Jeremy Corbyn, like most thinking people at the moment is bored rigid by the tedium of it all.

HollowTalk · 26/11/2019 21:49

Yes AN is arrogant and belligerent, but anyone being interviewed by him would expect that, wouldn't they? Corbyn didn't come across well, though. He seems to think that if he repeats himself, he doesn't need to actually answer the question.

Yes it was dreadful. Corbyn came across really badly. Isn't it Johnson's turn tomorrow? I hope AN gives him an equally tough time. Think Johnson might be a bit more teflon though.

He was dreadful. Andrew Neil is always very well prepared with facts/ figures etc, Corbyn looked like he was just some random dragged in off the street to do the interview. He sounded clueless about his own policies, couldn't deviate from soundbites. And his responses to the anti-Semitism stuff were appalling.

Arsetastic · 26/11/2019 22:29

And still you vote Labour ? For God's sake, grow up.

leckford · 26/11/2019 22:31

The twitters are laughing at him, he is an idiot and not pleasant. I expect Ms Abbott is locked in a cupboard until after the election. There is going to be massive infighting on 13 December, the comrades are going to be very upset!

DeRigueurMortis · 26/11/2019 22:34

It was a car crash and I say that as a former LP member who was planning to vote Labour in the GE (albeit on a best of a bad bunch basis).

He came across as evasive and flippant on anti semitism ("I've updated the process" really? well wow you...), lacking basic acumen on the cost of Labours tax, spending, nationalisation policies.

His response to perfectly reasonable questions on Brexit (especially whose going to run "your" Brexit campaign if you won't) and on responses to terrorism were ill considered and came across as woefully negligent in the absence of multiple credible responses in favour of sound bites.

Frankly I was about to yell at the TV if he uttered "let me explain" again in response to be directed to actually answer the question he'd been asked rather than the one he'd obviously been prepped to answer.

Yes, he got a hard time - but if you want to be PM you should expect a hard time and be able to handle it.

If you can't hack questions from Andrew Neil then how would fare with Putin on the opposite side of the table?

I expect Andrew will make it equally difficult for other party leaders. Sadly, I have to say I'd be surprised if any of them do worse than JC did tonight Sad.

Stellaris22 · 27/11/2019 10:04

Refused to watch this because AN is unpleasant and I don't understand why Corbyn agreed to do this. I'll be amazed if Johnson gets the same unpleasant treatment and if Neil insists on an apology for Johnsons actual racism for which he has been challenged to issue an apology for numerous times.

I imagine it will just be more 'get Brexit done' and lies about NHS nurses and housing and if he answers questions without using stock quotes about Brexit.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 27/11/2019 13:20

Just watching it now while eating lunch. It really is bad.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 27/11/2019 13:23

I don’t think that Andrew Neil is being aggressive or belligerent. He’s just following up questions that go unanswered. He is a journalist who has been given the role of interviewing someone who has put themselves forward as the potential PM of this country. Andrew Neil clearly has a much better handle of labours figures than JC does.

PsuedoSatisfactionBaby · 27/11/2019 13:44

It was fascinating. After this and the Sturgeon interview on Monday, I’m a little bit in awe of Andrew Neil. He is holding people to account in a way that nobody else can. His knowledge and mastery of the facts is so impressive. I’m dying to see how Boris copes with his interview....I’d be tempted to call in sick if I was him after seeing the other two being annihilated!

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 27/11/2019 13:52

Andrew Neil is one of the best interviewers out there. He is meticulously prepared and forensic in his questions. It would seem the ones complaining the loudest about him just don't like the fact he made 'their man' look like a clown. His style of questioning was no different with his interviews with Swindon and Sturgeon. He just refuses to let politicians waffle and be evasive, sadly a skill that too many journalists/broadcasters seem to have forgotten. Can't wait for him to interview Johnson, someone who does not do detail very well and thinks he can bluster his way through any encounter or talk about painting cardboard boxes.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 27/11/2019 13:58

It was a relatively short interview, and JC obviously would have preferred to talk about other things rather than answer the questions put to him. It was interesting that a few times AN had to say, ‘I agree with that / I’ve said that / I’m not disputing that’, as once again JC was trying to fill the allotted time with his ramblings. The pension issue was a good example of this. I thought AN did a great job of holding him to account. I’m sure he’ll do the same to Boris and I’ll enjoy watching that too!

Rhubarb01 · 27/11/2019 17:00

Just heard it rumoured on Radio 4 that Boris won't be doing the interview. I wonder why....no need to answer that!

SunsetBoulevard3 · 27/11/2019 17:43

Contrast this with the interview Nicola Sturgeon gave to him a few days ago. He was rude, interrupted her constantly , extremely aggressive. She was a model of calm, measured and reasonable response. I would have lost my rag with him. I don't agree with her policies, but she handled it all so much better. Corbyn would never manage relationships with leaders abroad or colleagues in other parties. He has no personal skills and sounds like an android.

electricwhisk · 27/11/2019 17:55

He was badly prepared. That reflects both on him and on his PR team.

But I think the bottom line is that JC is not very intelligent - and that means he is not suitable PM material.

Shimy · 27/11/2019 18:01

Pls What time is BJ’s interview with AN?

ValancyRedfern · 27/11/2019 19:00

I think BoJo has no intention of being interviews by Andrew Neil. He's a weasel but I think it's a wise strategy. No leader has come out of these I reviews well and he knows he won't either.

Stellaris22 · 27/11/2019 20:14

I wouldn't be surprised if Johnson decides not to do the interview, which surprises no one. Coward.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 28/11/2019 06:39

I’d be very disappointed if BJ doesn’t give an interview. I’m sure it’ll be hard and uncomfortable, but if AN can expose things, then the tories should change them. If the tories think something is the right course of action, their leader should be able to articulate that.
I totally get why Boris wouldn’t want to risk it, but I don’t think the voters will be impressed if he doesn’t expose himself to be critiqued. It didn’t work well for Theresa May.

Goldenchildsmum · 28/11/2019 08:35

I'm a strong Labour supporter but not a JC supporter. His AN interview was toe curling. I wanted it to stop from the minute it started. The man is candy floss on white toast. Pathetic. Please get rid of him after the election, PLP.

Rhubarb01 · 28/11/2019 08:42

I agree that a no-show from Boris won't be well-received, but maybe the Conservatives think it's the lesser if two evils.

I don't agree with most of the leaders, but I do respect those who are willing to subject themselves to one of AN's painful grillings!

ValancyRedfern · 28/11/2019 18:12

It's confirmed BJ won't be having an AN interview. I can't stand the man but I think it's a no-brainer for him. He's well ahead in the polls and has everything to lose and nothing to gain from an AN grilling.
