GodammitGreg · 03/11/2019 19:58

Ive Googled apparently it's Dead Poets Society

smemorata · 03/11/2019 19:58

Could be anything! It's not an uncommon expression.

Hassled · 03/11/2019 19:59

It could be one of many - hoi polloi was quite a common phrase when I was younger. Comes from Greek.

An oldie like Up Pompeii?

AdamantEve · 03/11/2019 20:05

I was going to suggest Mary Poppins but that’s “View Halloo”... not helpful

chipsandgin · 03/11/2019 20:12

Lots of films - I’d assume it was a phrase with fairly common usage, throughout the 20th century, much less so these days as it’s not that politically correct to speak about class, especially in a derogatory way which is essentially the meaning (referring to an inferior lower class).

It always bugs me because 'hoi' means 'the', and 'polloi' means 'many'. So 'the hoi polloi' is redundant.
I'll slink off to Pedants' Corner now.

Hoi polloi?

Could be any number of films...

VanyaHargreeves · 03/11/2019 23:20

Hoi Polloi isn't a quote unique to a film, it's basically another way of saying "the masses"
