I did. Its shocking what that girl went through but I'm not surprised having had some experience with similar teens.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 22/09/2019 08:45

Such a good series but so shocking.

Whatthefunk · 22/09/2019 14:21

One of the best series, I've seen in a long time. Heartbreaking and thought provoking, in equal measure

My thoughts exactly.

NurseButtercup · 22/09/2019 20:52

I've just read the review, discovered that Toni Collette and Merritt Weaver are the leads (I'm a massive fan girl of these two actresses). I'm settling down to watch a couple of episodes before bed. I have very high hopes, I'll be back

runwithme · 22/09/2019 22:41

Wow, I didn't realise Merritt Weaver was in the Walking Dead!

Just finished watching Unbelievable- binged watched it as it was compelling. My heart broke for the victims. How dare he?! The real Marie is an incredible person. The way she was treated by the police, the people close to her- disgusting. Such a good series, and excellent detective work by the two females and their team.

SarahTancredi · 22/09/2019 22:51

I watched this too.

It was incredibly good.

I've clearly spent too much time on the feminists board but I knew it would all go wrong the second they opened the door to a.single male police officer to.interview a young female victim. He barely let her speak and they seemed more interested in matching up times to the second and tripping her up than what actually happened.

How could police sit on a computer system that prevents them from.seeing if there are similar crimes elsewhere and be more interested in terrorising the girl I dont know.

It made me so angry. And so sad that someone actually went through this. That they could so easily ignore her injuries that they had all seen and had all documented whilst using miss remembered detail about who she phoned first to completely discredit her entire account of what happened.

SarahTancredi · 22/09/2019 23:05

Actually that's the part that confused me the most.

That they went over and over and over the stirt and pounced on any even tiny detail that could be exploited to invalidate her account. Yet the same level of detail was not applied to her injuries and the photos.

Why didnt they try and find out how she got the marks/bruises.

They couldn't be arsed. They didnt want to investigate at all.

Dogmcstuffins · 22/09/2019 23:12

I couldn’t stop watching this, I just wanted to reach out and hug her.

It was an awful thing that happened to each victim and I’m not taking away from any of their ordeals but I found it sad in the way each different victim was treated.

Marie was accused of lying because she was from a troubled background. The older college girl and the older women were taken seriously and the girl who injured her spine escaping (forgotten her name) was again treated like she was barking mad for her lifestyle and her property wasn’t even properly searched.

As I said though they all went through an awful ordeal but it seemed like the less socially acceptable two had a harder time getting the police to help them.

Rollergirl11 · 22/09/2019 23:35

I’ve just watched 3 or 4 episodes. It’s very good. But I can’t understand why the detectives investigating the young teen were at such pains to disbelieve her. Did they not have anything back from the hospital to corroborate that she had had sex and had injuries? They didn’t talk about that bit at all. Even if they didn’t believe that she had been raped surely there would be evidence that she had had sex and if they had that then why were so quick to say she was lying??!

Dogmcstuffins · 23/09/2019 00:26

The police detective said when interviewed in the aftermath of everything that the foster mum had swayed his thinking when she reported concerns about Marie’s reaction to the rape.

I found this article about it www.propublica.org/article/false-rape-accusations-an-unbelievable-story

Looobyloo · 23/09/2019 04:19

I watched this last week and I'm still cross at the treatment of Marie. Her foster mum was a disgrace for trying to persuade the police Marie was lying because 'she wasn't acting like a typical rape victim'
The difference between the treatment of the other rape victims and Marie was shocking, that poor girl.

I'm so glad Marie got compensation though I feel she deserved a damn sight more. I hope she's found happiness.

It was an excellent series with a great cast and brilliant acting.

SarahTancredi · 23/09/2019 06:58

Did they not have anything back from the hospital to corroborate that she had had sex and had injuries?

That's just it. Where did the evidence go? They had the pictures they kept looking at them Confused

The two female detectives didnt think of that much that wasnt blindingly obvious. None of it was some massive leap that no one ever would have even thought of.

The investigation was hard yes and they were incredibly dedicated and determined. And thank god they were there because everyone else gave up before having to think.of where to start .

But the actual ideas. The actual thought processes of what they could.look into werent so out there that those other police officers could be remotely let off for not thinking of them.

I think I was more angry almost at the desperately trying to gain.sympathy for fucking up. Standing there talking to Marie with an "apology" that practically turned him into a victim.

Took the absolute piss

NurseButtercup · 24/09/2019 12:11

I've just finished watching and wow wow wow, the acting in episodes 1+2 blew me away. More people need to see this.

BasedInDublin · 27/09/2019 23:29

I really enjoyed it, and learned from it. I typically don't watch or enjoy police/crime shows, but watched it for other reasons. It is very powerful, great acting, nice pacing, etc.

I had read the pulitzer article many years ago, and I think they did an amazing job.

There are lots of fantastic tv shows, but this is an important piece of work from a social perspective.

Can't believe it is so under the radar?

annonymousse · 27/09/2019 23:37

Finished watching this last night. Heartbreaking and anger inducing in equal measures. Googled Marie Adler afterwards and apparently she is married with two children and works as a truck driver. I hope she has a happy life and has been able to rise above what happened to her.
