True Crime Documentaries - Netflix and Beyond

I've fallen down the Netflix true crime hole. Who is with me?

I finally got around to watching the Amanda Knox documentary. It was great. Very similar to the Madeleine McCann series - but with much less pointless filler about Portuguese culture and business. I'm now two episodes into the Evil Genius miniseries about the Pizza Bomber. That case fascinates me. Also watched Abducted In Plain Sight a few months back - I've never seen so many twists in one programme, crikey.

What true crime docs have you all been watching? What one should I watch next?

When they see us.
It's utterly compelling and truly infuriating.

Mindhunter if it's still there. Loved that. Though it's a drama it's based on the FBI criminal profiling serial killers in the 70's.

I’ve just watched one called The Alcassar murders which was really interesting. It’s in Spanish but with English subtitles.

TheRealKimmySchmidt63 · 29/06/2019 22:11

I'm doing the investigator now pretty compelling

The Confession Tapes is very good but makes you despair at elements of the US justice system.

dayswithaY · 01/07/2019 07:40

The Innocent Man, a documentary made by the crime writer John Grisham. The Keepers - not an easy watch but it will blow your mind.

Fairylea · 01/07/2019 07:42

Not Netflix but watch the Piers Morgan Psychopath thing on itv player if you haven’t seen it. Well worth a watch.

MardAsSnails · 01/07/2019 07:42

The Unabomber one was good.

However, mostly posting here to get more ideas on what to watch next!

Monkeytapper · 01/07/2019 07:52

The Staircase on Netflix

Monkeytapper · 01/07/2019 07:52

Making a Murderer

KevinKlineSwoon · 02/07/2019 13:45

The Staircase definitely!

KevinKlineSwoon · 02/07/2019 13:47

Mommy Dead and Dearest is fascinating and heart breaking. It's about Munchausens by proxy and terrible consequences. I saw in on tv a few years ago so I'm not sure where you'd fine it.

Mirali · 02/07/2019 13:49

The Keepers. About a murdered nun teacher in 1969, who'd uncovered sex abuse of girls in her school by priests

PigeonofDoom · 03/07/2019 20:35

Retro but they have the whole run of forensic files on Netflix. This was an American true crime programme that ran for about 15-20 years, each episode focuses on a different case and how forensics solved it. Fascinating because:

  • when watched as a whole it’s like a history of forensics. The early episodes, the cases are all solved by (probably now quite dodgy) techniques like hair and fibre analysis, bite marks, blood spatter etc. Then comes DNA.....
  • it’s an insight into small town America and how weird it can be. I mean, why divorce your spouse when you can blow them up with a pipe bomb Confused
-crazy massive 80s/90s American hair Grin

When they see us is really well done. Will break your heart though.

LoafofSellotape · 04/07/2019 23:35

The Keepers

MadameJosephine · 04/07/2019 23:47

Definitely Making a murderer, I loved it. There’s decades worth of documentary footage and evidence and so many twists and turns

zcazca · 05/07/2019 16:32

The staircase! Do you think Michael is guilty? (I do)

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 05/07/2019 21:03

Not Netflix but I loved the Death in Ice Valley podcast - an unsolved murder case in Norway in the 70s. The fact it was audio only made it even more intriguing somehow!
