Coercive Control in Corrie

It was strange last night - I had just said to DH that Geoff’s behaviour in Corrie was making me feel very uncomfortable & that I thought his relationship with Yasmeen could be emotionally abusive, then I googled it & that’s the way the storyline is going to develop. It’s been very well done, gradually building up. What does everyone think?

i agree its been done really well and will be interesting to see the outcome hopefully he gets his comeuppance

Squiff70 · 25/06/2019 21:45

I thought he was VERY offhand and in fact abusive from the first time I saw him on the soap, the time he went in the florists to buy cheap flowers for Yasmeen and went off in a huge strop because she didn't want to sleep with him. I'm not shocked by this storyline but my God Corrie has a lot going on already.

AllAboutHallowsEve · 25/06/2019 21:47

Yes it's been building up for sometime, which I think is a good thing. Hopefully a lot of women will recognise themselves in Yasmeen and seek help.

I didn’t like him from the get-go.

Geoff has been vile from the beginning.
It's not the first time he has invited Tim and Sally round for dinner and not discussed it with her.

I don't watch Coronation street, but love this piece of writing on a similar, old storyline

I remember the Shelley storyline, it was very well done, far better than this one will be, I suspect. Her partner became dreadfully controlling but it built up slowly. I always remember a scene where her mother found her crying, and asked him angrily if he had hit her. He was genuinely horrified, and said "As if I would ever raise my hand to a woman!" Because of course, he never did, it was all psychological abuse.

Modern Corrie is usually too quick/sensational.

It's a pale comparison of what happened to Shelley

I've been reading the whole situation wrong, to me it felt like she thinks he's beneath her, she seems the top dog in the relationship and he's a wet lettuce.

She doesn't seem to like men that much and I thought they were going to set her up with the woman who works in Roys (the one who used to be in Bread)

Im sure they were a teetotal family in the beginning. Now Yasmin is some kind of wine expert.

They have done the story well. I wonder if he’d have been the same if hed got with Audrey.

desperatehousewife21 · 26/06/2019 06:33

eachandeveryone haha yes you’re right they were a teetotal family I can vividly remember Alya saying that before and when the grandad (who got booted off the show) was in it they made references to not drinking. Now she’s throwing them back in the bistro Grin
