Ackley Bridge Series 3

I have been watching this since it first started finding it a bit like Call the Midwife. ie dealing with difficult issues but wrapped up in a slightly cosy view of the world.

So I caught up with the first episode on the new series after my brain had been sent into over drive by Years and Years.

Really enjoyed the development of the story line for those for whom education offers a way out and for those that education seems like a dead end. But then right at the end was devasted by the ending.

This is the only reason I have started this thread (couldn't find an existing one).

A reminder that even at 8pm life isn't a fairy story.

I was wanting to shout “check their phones ffs” at the screen when it was her word against his.

stormsurfer · 02/08/2019 18:04

That might be what happens next week? I'm sad to think it will be the last one.

Papergirl1968 · 02/08/2019 18:29

Oh is it the last one next week?
That will be sad 😭

stormsurfer · 02/08/2019 19:06

Well I hope I'm wrong, but I thought it was.

PaddingtonBearHardStare · 02/08/2019 21:35

Definitely last one next week

Papergirl1968 · 02/08/2019 21:56

Oh no. Let’s hope it goes out with a bang

TheFirstOHN · 04/08/2019 19:55

I'm going to be away this week so will temporarily hide the thread to avoid spoilers.

I really love this programme. Missy dying was so heart breaking, I really cried.
The storyline with Cory was well done, he is a vulnerable boy with all the bluster of a cocky teenager, really well portrayed.
Where exactly was Oliver in all the running around?! She gives birth and then swoops back in to the rescue with her baby nowhere to be seen, except for the strange baby she has in the back of the chair. I kept rewinding it to see if it was a doll.

"I'm no racist, I voted remain. I've got a gang of Albanians doing my back patio" 😩😂

icelollycraving · 07/08/2019 06:44

Such a great last episode. It made me laugh and cry. I think it had so much more in potential storylines but maybe best to go out on a high.

stormsurfer · 07/08/2019 19:17

Yes I loved that last episode. Finished all their stories very well. Moving and funny too. I wish it was coming back with a new intake, though. And I think the Downton Abbey guy really owns that role.

icelollycraving · 07/08/2019 19:46

I’ve just read an article saying they wanted to be realistic. All the students would move on which allows the younger ones to move up so perhaps all is not lost!
Sue Carp picking up Cory in her car made me laugh, ‘Oy Casanova!’

stormsurfer · 07/08/2019 20:14

Oh so maybe there will be more? I thought it was the last ever.

icelollycraving · 07/08/2019 20:25

I thought so too. Hopefully not. It would be strange for it to not get recommissioned as I think it’s their most popular drama (after Handmaid’s).

Papergirl1968 · 07/08/2019 21:48

I was a bit disappointed in the last episode, and bored of Nas’s “will she/won’t she go to Oxford” storyline. Although her mum intervening was good. Love that actress.
Also great acting from the lad who plays Cory.

stumbledin · 08/08/2019 00:09

I am still finding it really enjoyable (including a few tears of course).

Was sorry that only Nas ended up scattering Missy's ashes. I think her mum should be there.

And last week I said I want Kaneez to run the school, now I want her to run the world. Her speech in the kitchen when they were all sitting round was very moving.

Apparently Channel 4 haven't yet decided to commission another series.

Does anyone know young adults / children of the age in the show who watch it? Do they like it, or do they think it all a bit boring.

I thought the same with Missy’s ashes.
Dd, 15, sometimes watches it but not always.

PantsyMcPantsface · 08/08/2019 18:50

I love Ackley - but it does suffer from the Waterloo Road problem of being run by a teaching staff of about three... with random other bodies shoved into the staffroom for the shots in there.

It wasn't Naz going to Oxford that got me to be honest - it was the end of eras bit of the skip going that really had a lump in my throat.

Still haven't forgiven them for the "dyspraxia overcome by a quick drumming lesson" storyline though.

TitsInAbsentia · 10/08/2019 23:50

I'd have been fine if they hadn't used 'both sides' over the last few scenes...honest...Sad #snotfest Sad
