Anyone watching?
I work in the nuclear industry but not in a direct technical role
It's fascinating

I can't believe how casual they all are

Though everyone speaking in very English accents is a but offputting

I watched it on demand. Very scary how adamant they were that nothing was wrong. Shock Horrific way to die.

LibbyJeffries · 07/05/2019 21:39

This is so utterly horrifying. Literally nightmare-inducing

Orangelover · 07/05/2019 21:58

It's actually making me feel sick! Stuff of absolute nightmares can't believe it's real

MemorialBeach · 07/05/2019 22:00

This is absolutely terrifying. I am browsing Mumsnet as a distraction while watching as I was finding it too horrifying and distressing to let myself get too involved/drawn into watching it. It's like watching a horror film - I am going to need to find something very lighthearted to watch after it for a while before I can go to bed.

MardAsSnails · 07/05/2019 22:02

What channel is it on? I really want to watch and will have to find it online

Ffsnosexallowed · 07/05/2019 22:04

Fascinating??? It is horrific. I remember it happening - terrifying

Ffsnosexallowed · 07/05/2019 22:04

It's on sky Atlantic

bobstersmum · 07/05/2019 22:08

All things nuclear terrify me, there was a drama made about it quite a good few years back it was all in one episode but very similar to this. I've only just watched half of the first one, I think they really weren't aware of the dangers were they, the people all stood outside with children saying how beautiful it looked, I would be running for the hills!

LoadsaBlusher · 07/05/2019 22:12

Just watched it and I’m so tense !
Horrific as the whole time I was thinking this is real .
I feel like I need to go watch a Disney cartoon or something to cleanse my brain
Well made though and will be watching the rest ...

chatnicknameyousuggested · 07/05/2019 22:21

I live not a million miles from Chernobyl and yes, it was and still is terrifying.

GodDammitAmy · 07/05/2019 22:25

I don't get Sky Atlantic, although I really wanted to see this.

AngeloMysterioso · 07/05/2019 22:27

I'm actually quite glad they didn't attempt dodgy Russian accents.

What I found hard to follow was how similar a lot of the engineer chaps looked, was hard to distinguish between all the moustached men in lab coats.

BoRhap · 07/05/2019 22:30

Just watched a bit of it. Stupid question but what is making them bleed like that?

AngeloMysterioso · 07/05/2019 22:37

Radiation. Although the actual science of it is lost on me, hopefully there'll be someone more intelligent who can explain the finer mechanics of it- but basically it is invisible, it's everywhere, and it's Very Very Bad.

Singlebutmarried · 07/05/2019 22:38

Radiation.

The feed water, the exposure.

It’s horrific.

But I will watch the rest of it.

IPokeBadgers · 07/05/2019 22:54

Watched it. Shocking and horrifying. I fear next week will be even harder to watch as we start to really see the effects the radiation has on the staff and first responders. I'm taking some time to digest what's happened and to remember those who died in the first few hours, days and weeks...those who suffered the horrific first hand effects of acute radiation poisoning.

I travelled to Chernobyl and Pripyat last year. It was a fascinating trip but brought home to me the human cost of the disaster...seeing the exclusion zone, the abandoned city and villages left to rot as well as the new sarcophagus they have built over the remains of reactor four. The fact people were evacuated for"a few days" and never got to go home again. It's so hard to take in.

This programme will be interesting as it looks like they are going to depict and explore the Soviet mindset and subsequent investigation into the event.

onanotherday · 07/05/2019 23:00

I remember when it happened we were told not to eat welsh lamb! I remember thinking if the sheep were affected then we must be to. But too scary.. or political to admit at the time. Will be interesting to see if they are able to tell us the whole facts.

chatnicknameyousuggested · 07/05/2019 23:18

Where I live there are some strange cancers that are thought to be a result of fallout. The milk and wheat was also affected.

Tootyfilou · 07/05/2019 23:41

It is utterly horrifying. Some of those workers were so incredibly brave.
I remember reading an article about the helicopter pilots who drenched the building in water knowing full well they would die.

AnyFucker · 07/05/2019 23:43

.

HearMeSnore · 07/05/2019 23:45

Just watched it. Terrifying...and infuriating. All those smug executives sitting in their lead-lined shelter, congratulating each other on their plan to stop the spread of "misinformation" while a massive radioactive plume gushed out of the roof and rained toxic ash down on the innocent families watching the pretty glow in the sky. I wanted to thump something.

TheRollingCrone · 08/05/2019 00:03

I listened to a programme in R4 - one of the commenters opined that the cloud came and rained all over Cumbria & Ireland. It was a hard watch - utterly terrifying.
What went wrong there? Why did the core melt?

Gingernaut · 08/05/2019 00:12

There was a feature length film, starring Adrian Edmondson, called 'Surviving Disaster'.

The core exploded because because of poor reactor design, poor procedure and lack of regard for safety procedures.

Gingernaut · 08/05/2019 00:14

Found it.

TheRollingCrone · 08/05/2019 00:17

@Gingernaut thank you!
