How realistic is Bodies?

I'm watching the boxset on BBC iplayer and I am wondering how realistic it is. Anyone remember it - basically it describes gynaecology consultants (and hospital managements) as vain, arrogant bastards who will stop at nothing to cover their own backs.

Thanks for the tip off. Loving this series so far (mainly for Max Beasley I have to admit.)

Terrifying though if this is an accurate depiction.

It's absolutely the case that most people would be horrified if they actually knew what happened in hospitals. That's not because they are a hotbed of mindless sex, patient harm and egomania ......though everything has its moments .........but just because life and death runs on very different rhythms there. Bodies showed that difference very clearly.

I wonder why it didn't go beyond series 2?

I think the Finale was separate from series 2 and was shown as a one-off episode to round things off.

Totally coincidentally, I watched this not long after reading "This is Going to Hurt" and there were quite a few points of similarity, over and above the fact that both mainly concern people working in obstetrics and gynaecology.

SPOILERS AHEAD Just warning in case people haven’t finished it

So it took us ten days but we’ve now watched all 17 episodes and overall I thought it was bloody great. BUT did anyone else think that the finale was a bit mad? Rob and Polly? Rob and Hurley managing to somehow become colleagues and neither finding out til they were face to face in a corridor? Donna as a hard nosed journalist? CJD?! All in all I thought the two series were outstanding and it should have had a much wider audience, but heavens above, the finale was like a fever dream. Although I like that in the Bodies universe Polly and Whitman are probably together raising Polly’s little ginger Manc baby and carrying out their own personal research into female sexual dysfunction.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 30/04/2019 08:37

Rob and Polly were always going to get together at some point so I that didn't surprise me.

I think I'm the only one that liked the finale, I thought it was greatGrin

Another fascinating fact: Patrick Baladi's father was an ob/gyn and his mother was a midwife.

I liked the finale too Dame

Brilliant series and so realistic! How did they do it?

placemats · 30/04/2019 08:52

Forgot to add that Patrick Baladi played Roger, the incompetent Ob/Gyn consultant.

I watched a programme years ago on how they made the all the props, was so interesting. Could've been an interview rather than a specific programme come to think of it.

From my experience working in the NHS as a scrub nurse, both the medical scenes and the behaviour of the staff was unbelievably accurate ( taking into account that it was filmed 10 - 15 years ago. I have just binge watched it and loved it ...... can’t believe I missed it first time round.

I am irrationally happy that Keith Allen and Polly actress are together in real life 😄

Wetoopere · 30/04/2019 09:47

It does feel very familiar to when I had dd2 (2001) and some of the things in the news which came out about that hospital ( Furness general hospital).

JessMariano · 30/04/2019 22:12

Me too recall re Polly and Tony Grin

It’s the only medical drama where I felt that the actors actually look they know what they’re doing, like they’re actually making those decisions rather than just saying lines. I think it’s partly the dialogue as well as the props etc.

SarahBeeney · 30/04/2019 23:50

I've just binge watched it all over the last few days.

I'm really gutted that there's no more for me to watch!

Such a shame that there wasn't another series. Really great characters and acting. I was sad that it didn't work out for Rob and Donna

Pinkfizzy · 30/04/2019 23:58

Me too!

I avoided watching it at the time as I was between c/s1 & 2 (of eventually 3) & knew I would not cope, as I remember watching cardiac arrest not long before, with Helen Baxendale & Ace Bhatti ( now the PCC I LoD) JM does use his actors again & again!
