Pose "mothers"... really?!

I'm talking about the BBC drama set in 80s New York. On the transexual/gay scene they have balls where houses compete in a particular category. The head of each house is called a 'mother'. Initially I thought this was just a loose term however as I carried on watching one of the characters talks about "since I became a mother..." quite a bit, in reference to some nearly adult boys she shares a flat with. I just cant get on with it! I loved the show otherwise but this characters belief she is actually a mother to these people (& their subsequent buying into this farce as well) just isn't convincing. I don't know if this was actually the case in that era.

Like I said, I've loved the show otherwise, just this one bit really gripes me! Anyone else?

I haven't seen it but are you they don't just mean "since I took over this role?"

I've heard this term before, I can't say it bothers me tbh, it's like a chaperone, isn't it or host mother?

@EachandEveryone ohhh!!! I'll check that out!

@DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen I don't think so, other characters not on the scene also refer to this woman as "a mother"... to a boy shes known for a matter of weeks at age 17!

Off to find that Netflix doc now... Grin
