I can't remember which episode and I cba to Google but in the otherwise excellent Sex Education, why is there a photo of someone's vagina doing the rounds?
Presumably the image wasn't of a dark, vaguely cylindrical tube but you would never know from all the talking about VAGINAS.
This has upset me more than it should ( I know I, I know), particularly as this programme seemed so fresh and progressive. And the soundtrack was awesome.
They really dropped a clanger here, how come nobody noticed that while everyone presumably meant the Mound of Venus, it was referred to throughout as a fucking VAGINA.

Thank you and good night.

You are right but no one in the world ever, apart from on Mumsnet, calls it a vulva in real life.

WoogleCone · 30/01/2019 12:58

Yeah, whilst vulva might be technical, vagina is the commonly used term. And only on MN does anyone care.
Sorry!

dudsville · 30/01/2019 12:59

I think it's weird. There's no difference in the comfort of the words vulva and vagina. It's not like one is super clinical and the other is touchy feely (!). They are equal terms. i don't know why the correct terms aren't used.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 30/01/2019 13:00

To me 'vulva' sounds like something from Star Trek.

But I don't have a word for it, it depends on my mood and who I'm talking to. 'Bathing suit parts', is my current favourite.

BaronessBomburst · 30/01/2019 13:00

A fucking vulva?
That'd make it porn. Grin

planespotting · 30/01/2019 13:26

I hate the word vulva and unless I am talking scientifically I won't use it. It makes me Confused
Vagina for me thanks. We also call banana trees like that even though they are not trees, or strawberries fruit.
No need to always be so scientific when talking.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 30/01/2019 18:09

I'd forgotten that I started this thread Blush
Hmmm, seems the vagina fanciers are strongly represented on this thread thread. One thing I don't understand is why vulva is considered more scientific than vagina? They're both Proper Names. In my head it's
like referring to one's lower leg as one's ankle. It's Just Not Right Smile
Fucking vulvas does sound a bit porn, I'll give you that. However, if I'd said Bloody Vulva then that creates a rather graphically menstrual image. I'll think on that one further.
Writing "menstrual" has made me think though. I don't insist on my DD using that instead of period. On the other hand, DD is 18 so I wouldn't get very far anyway. And I refer to an anus as a bumhole when reminding my DS to wash himself thoroughly. ( He is considerably younger than 18 btw) So, on the basis of the evidence outlined above, I conclude I'm not a stickler for using the scientific word over the more everyday one.
I dont think it's a scientific issue however to want to not misname a body part. I can't think of any other instance where this occurs although a poster may come along shortly to disabuse me of that idea.
It just bothers me I guess that it's now so ingrained that we use vagina as a one word for all those lady parts downstairs. I think I'd even prefer Front Bottom to this.
To be serious for a minute though, I had always thought that if I taught my DD the correct anatomical terms then she would be less disadvantaged should she ever need to talk about her body parts. I think it's especially important for a female to make herself absolutely clear in any discussion where this comes up, be it with a doctor, the police, or a lover.
Anyway, I can see my solitary vulva has been swamped by everybody's vaginas so I shall leave it here and get in with making dinner.
However, this talk of calling periods periods etc has reminded me that for years I would talk about "Satan's blood bursting the bristly button" after watching a particularly funny comedy with the inimitable Julia Davis. So my poor DD has had to listen to me refer to periods in those terms as I thought it was so hilarious, although I've probably misremembered the quote in parts.
And whenever we had a dilemma we would ask ourselves " what would Malala do?" as a helpful guide to doing the right thing ,Grin. And in this instance I think Malala would definitely be with me on this matter.

As you were.

Well, I agree with you! The vagina and vulva are two different areas. Like calling your head a neck.

TheDropBear · 01/02/2019 10:52

Haven't watched the show but I know the premise. It's not a documentary so I think it depends on which character is saying it. The sex therapist mother you could expect to use the correct terms but teenagers don't tend to use vulva.

CallMeSirShotsFired · 01/02/2019 10:57

When I watched that scene I was highly amused at how angry some MNers would be about it.

So this post has made my morning.

VAGINA VAGINA VAGINA, I don't care, we all know what it means.

Morgan12 · 01/02/2019 10:59

This is seriously what people worry about. Other people's live eh.

I'd be surprised if anyone would actually care about this.

Ofthread · 01/02/2019 10:59

Vulva brigade

Ofthread · 01/02/2019 11:04

Vulva actually means 'womb' etymologically anyway.

gemmaxyz · 01/02/2019 11:04

So not just a Mumsnet thing. Every educated woman I know finds this annoying, and so do most decent men I'm friends with. (And a lot of these are people who are pushing middle age and think wokeness can go a bit far sometimes.) You will see anywhere online that there are many feminists posting that people are annoyed by this.

Morgan12 · 01/02/2019 11:41

Every educated woman you know? Do the uneducated ones not care? Maybe they are too stupid to care.

I'm highly educated and don't care what people call it.

Whitney168 · 01/02/2019 11:43

Every educated woman I know finds this annoying, and so do most decent men I'm friends with.

How on earth do you get in to the conversations to actually know what all your friends think on this topic?

Racecardriver · 01/02/2019 11:44

Most young people call it a vagina in passing. An improvement on the foofs and vajayjays of generations passed.

gemmaxyz · 01/02/2019 12:21

People who are sex positive feminists (some identifying as such, others just having similar attitudes without labelling) and talk about sex related things as if they were any other topic and not something weird and taboo? One of those things you'd roll your eyes at the same as you might if there were mistakes in portraying a town you know in a film or a book, or it got something wrong that was common knowledge or which you knew from work.

Duckswaddle · 03/02/2019 20:26

I’ve never heard anyone in real life be so obsessed over this, everyone knows what it means (and yes I’m an educated woman). Being so ‘technical’ doesn’t mean you’re a superior being, it’s just cringey.
