I feel sorry for the workers who never got paid. They don’t really have the means to sue like the wealthy guests do.

twilightcafe · 22/01/2019 11:45

I had smypathy for the Bahamian workers who didn't get paid.

The rest of them?
'A fool and his money are easily parted' springs to mind.

Fleabag123 · 22/01/2019 11:48

It is absolutely gobsmacking the mess they got themselves into. I also felt for the workers who moved heaven and earth to try to do the impossible and never got paid.
Even the ones who sued didn’t get paid - he clearly doesn’t have the money so they probably never will

staydazzling · 22/01/2019 12:28

yes that poor women who fed everyone someone set up a gofundme and it got like 130,000

Also how did Ja Rule get off so easily??

OP posts:
LittleLebowski · 22/01/2019 16:41

Oh I know! I'd read about this vaguely, but the documentary is unbelievable!
There is a crowdfunder for the poor woman, Maryann Roll, who was well and truly shafted by the 'organisers':www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-46937725 Ja Rule has apparently been mouthing off on Twitter saying he was as much taken in as anybody else, even though you hear him clearly at the final board meeting trying saying it wasn't lying but 'false advertising'! I'm glad they changed the Twitter advertising rules about including the sponsored disclaimer in hashtags.
As everyone says, my sympathy lies with the Bahamian workers who were diddled and some of those who ended up with $1000s on their credit cards because of Billy.
I couldn't believe the guy and the blow job in return for the Evian water story! Shock

LittleLebowski · 22/01/2019 16:42

Sorry staydazzling - didn't read properly you already mentioned the crowdfunder.

staydazzling · 22/01/2019 19:57

the gay events planner seemed one of the few ppl to have any remorse, i think he'd been manipulated aswell in a way

It was just so 😱
Someone said he reminded them of wolf of Wall Street and I totally agree- he believed his own hype, always
Those poor poor locals doing all the work
The poor guys having their own cards loaded
Not so much the idiots who booked without knowing anything...
And yes #Ad very relevant...

staydazzling · 23/01/2019 03:05

that wanker weeing in ppls tents!!!Angry youre all inthe same boat you moron! I do feel sorry for a lot of then though tbh we all know naiive 18 19 20 year olds are, im 30 and id be terrified in that situation , not daft enough to go though Grin

RainbowWaffles · 23/01/2019 04:50

It was hilarious until we got to the serious bit where all the people, especially the locals, weren’t paid and lost money etc. I was very pleased to read about the crowdfunding for the local cafe lady, restores your faith in humanity. Lol at the false advertising... so who’s buying tickets for this year? They have learnt from their mistakes from last year apparently...

staydazzling · 23/01/2019 10:40

yeah that was touching she must be overcome with emotion over that, bless her. I could feel so many of his employees frustration, they got rid of Keith quickly enough didnt they Hmm was he german? very efficient and to the point and they didn't like it.

Mrskeats · 23/01/2019 10:43

So glad about that nice restaurant lady: hope the other Bahamian workers get similar. The guy in prison now seemed like a psychopath to me. Delusions of grandeur.

Mrskeats · 23/01/2019 10:44

I also thought the young, tech types seemed super smart so hopefully they’ve not been damaged by it professionally.

staydazzling · 23/01/2019 11:00

That Grant was clearly off his tits on coke aswell, 'neurotic grant' , he was almost as delusional as Billy but not as culpable ,Yeah Marc,Andy and Shiyuan seem decent people.

What struck me,and glared at me throughout, and i dont wish to cause any offence is that places like the Bahamas can have high crime levels due to the poverty, the would be guests were just so vulnerable, entitled white drunk rich kids altogether on one area? if i was a local criminal id have thought every Christmas had come at once, they kids were VERRRY lucky the didnt get robbed blind or worse.

livefornaps · 23/01/2019 11:12

Special heart mention to Mark who seemed like a sweetie, who tried to warn them repeatedly by email that it was going to be a shitshow only to be told at least the guests would be greeted with his smiling face and yoga skills. He was so lovely and gangly, with kind eyes.

Also the kid who looked like a baby giraffe who was sent off to book the headline acts for twice the asking price, hahaha.

I think the doc serves as a cautionary tale about american style work culture whereby everyone becomes "a family" who looks to the leader's "vision" as if he's the messiah. It's just a job, ffs. Just do your job. Don't listen to the bullsheeeterss

Mrskeats · 23/01/2019 11:15

Yep mark was ace.
Also I’m not thinking Blink 182 would be popular with that crowd. They saw which way the wind was blowing though.

Elfinablender · 23/01/2019 11:19

Do you know, unless I misunderstood bits because I was watching while distracted, I think he would have completely got away with it with a few changes and more time?

All of the money he fraudulently took from the bank's/ financers would have been repaid if they'd have made it work/ kept it on budget and then no-one would have asked any questions. They'd have been able to keep the original island if they didn't keep referencing Pablo Escobar. They could have used the original guy's idea to have all/ most of the accommodation on the ship. Getting the drunk people to - from ship to island would have been tricky but manageable.

I mean, they had the makings of a workable scam and they fucked it up with incompetence.

KingLooieCatz · 23/01/2019 11:25

Recipe for disaster, especially when you think about Woodstock.

It's an absolute miracle there was no assaults, sexual or otherwise, fights or drug overdoses, with a massive crowd of drunken youngsters, not enough places to sleep, no security or privacy.

I found the documentary fascinating - I thought it was going to be a movie based on a true story. No need, millennials being millennials, enough original footage to put the story together from that.
