I am considering ditching my monthly payments for SKY which are really expensive and going with live TV and some sort of devise that records and pauses TV and maybe getting Netflix too to boost my choices. Has anyone done this and what do I need to do?

I'm with virgin media but only have the basic package with no extra channels. I don't miss any of the extra channels at all.

I have a now tv box which I don't currently use but will subscribe to their entertainment package when game of thrones comes back on!

Me. Got rid of Virgin TV and have broadband only, saving aboyt 40 qu8d a month. Both TVs have integral freeview, whicb i access with indoor digital HD freeview booster aerial aa ine on the roof is ancient (15 quid on amazon). Works great. Then use netflix, amazon prime etc via tv or Android box. Record on box or usb stick. No need for sky or virgin tv anymore imo.

Yes. Ditched the paid services years ago. Have not regretted it.

We have a Humax freesat pvr box but tbh we never record anything any more. We mostly consume through Apple TV: BBC iPlayer, Netflix, Amazon Prime, iTunes.

Our new TV has a built in freeview receiver and streaming over wifi but we still use the Apple TV because we already had it set up with a wired ethernet connection. We very rarely watch live TV.

Yup.... in 2007... never looked back....

somewhereovertherain · 22/01/2019 22:26

Never had sky or virgin. Feeeview, smart tv, netflicks and Amazon suit us.

TowelNumber42 · 22/01/2019 22:35

I buy a temporary subscription to NowTV for Game of Thrones too.

I feel quite excited about the prospect of getting rid of my huge Sky bill! Thank you all. so I have an LG TV with apps and stuff on it so what kit do I need to buy?

Now tv is sky at a fraction of the cost. I add and stop now throughout the year, as well as Netflix. We watch more tv in the winter and less in the summer, so we pick and choose how much we want it watch.

IWouldPreferNotTo · 22/01/2019 23:51

Yes, about six years ago but I don't bother with FreeView.

iPlayer, Netflix and Amazon Prime covers 98% of what I want and for the remaining I can force myself to use 4OD

missnevermind · 22/01/2019 23:55

January 1st we cancelled everything. We get a great broadband deal with EE so no longer pay for TV home phone and no packages at all.
Free view only through the old sky box and a laptop hooked up to the Tv as too old to be a smart telly.
No longer pay a nearly £80 per month Sky bill.

MayFayner · 22/01/2019 23:58

I got rid of Sky about two years ago and just have Netflix now. I meant to get the free channels but never got round to it. Sometimes I watch All4 etc.

So great not having to be a Sky customer 😂

ThespianTendencies · 23/01/2019 07:11

This is brilliant! Thankyou.

Sounds like your tv is modern enough to have everything built in so yiu just need to connect it at the back to a freevirw aerial - either the aerial on yiur roof, if its modern enough, or an internal booster one from Amazon. You will have to tune it in from the relevant bit in the menus. Then you need either a usb stick on the back or a freeview recorder vox or suchlike if you want to record freeview.

I have to send my sky box back but as i has integrated freeview am l correct thinking that l can link the TV to broadband and watch some channels on freeview?

MockerstheFeManist · 03/05/2019 10:39

Hi Snapes.

Freeview is a terrestrial aerial service. To watch freeview you need to plug in a suitable aerial for your location.

Your JVC is also a smart TV. This means that if you plug a LAN cable into it at one end and the router at the other, then you can watch whatever services it offers, such as BBC Iplayer, ITV Hub, All4 etc.

Many thanks

CharlieCoCo · 19/05/2019 21:01

I see to have virgin.
I now have Netflix, now tv and amazon prime

GnarlyOldGoatDude · 30/05/2019 22:03

Came on here to ask the same question about getting rid of Sky, now that GoT has finished!
We’ve been with Sky for 12 years, how does Netflix work? Is it monthly subscription?
We have amazon prime and an android box already.

calpop · 10/06/2019 09:43

Netflix is monthly sub that you can get through your android box. You so have lots of internet streaming options through it too. Freeview, Prime and Netflix should cover most things though.

HappyParent2000 · 11/08/2019 21:35

I wouldn’t touch sky with a barge pole, outdated monopoly forcing you into an old tech because it was relevant before broadband and they earnt enough money in 90s/00s to buy all the good stuff and drag more people into their backwards world.

Do they offer a 100% streamed service or do you still need a pointless dish?

peridito · 30/08/2019 14:26

If I ditched Sky would my DH miss out on football and cricket ?
