Anyone watching?

I sort of like it - adore Gillian Anderson, like the main boy and his best mate. Quite like the nice mean girl too.

But it's weird. Setting isn't right - no uk school is like that surely and the messaging is very heavy handed (although I did like the Spartacus like 'my vagina').

I am about 30 years too old for it I suspect

It was filmed in my Welsh village so I can confirm the location is definitely UK based.

fatpatsthong · 13/01/2019 23:19

Is it the Wye Valley Johnny? Looks beautiful.

It's the swimming pool/letterman jacket/American high school look I feel grating....

No, it's not far from Newport. It's called Caerleon.

iwantavuvezela · 13/01/2019 23:22

I really loved it, much more than I thought I would. Hope they make a second series.
If you google sex education there are a few articles on the fact that It is set in UK but with an american feel

GoJohnnyGoGoGoGo · 13/01/2019 23:24

It's an old university (Newport/Uni of South Wales) they shut down a few years ago. It's been used for a few films/tv programs as it's sat empty while they fight the locals to build a housing estate on it.

CreakyBlinder · 14/01/2019 12:16

I'm watching the first episode now; I don't get when it's meant to be set. Some of it seems current but some of the homes and outfits are very 70s?

CreakyBlinder · 14/01/2019 12:18

Also some of the teenagers are about 26 Grin

AllGoodDogs · 14/01/2019 22:12

It's confusing me... Clothes and cars and home decor off of the 70s but they have mobile phones and porn hub??!

CreakyBlinder · 15/01/2019 07:34

I didn't finish Episode 2. It felt awful confused. Otis looks a good decade younger than his classmates. And the 'ooh look we're talking about willies' gimmick wore thin a bit quickly.

fatpatsthong · 15/01/2019 11:35

I've reached the end now and think it got better.

Had a look at some of those articles re the setting being an aesthetic choice (plus clearly widening us appeal) and that became less of an issue.

Loved the guy who played Otis
Loved Lily and the alien sex
Loved Gillian Anderson's outfits. I apparently look like a fatter version of her so got ideas.

The last 2 episodes did work for me - clumsy Otis and the house cat thing, Eric finding his place. Poor Adam and his shit dad (and other things!) and Maeve saying she was really smart. Plus the bit on the bikes - just so sweet.

Just on the last episode now & I didn't think I'd like it but I've loved it.
I like that it was mix of American & British culture & that even though it was set in 2018 it had an old feel about it.
Not many things on tv make me laugh out loud but this did.
Oh & Mikael Persbrandt (Jakob the handyman) is seriously hot!!!!
Hope there's second season.

fatpatsthong · 17/01/2019 18:16

Chickens, as the only other person who has watched it, can I ask if you spotted the Adams 'romance' element?

By all accounts there were lots of signs but I missed them.

OP posts:
Andromeida59 · 17/01/2019 20:11

We've gone through the whole thing and enjoyed it. It was funny and emotional in places.
I picked up on Adam's "romance" in episode one.

fatpatsthong · 17/01/2019 20:29

I am clearly an emotional cul de sac! I thought it was going to go a different way!

sheepsheep · 23/01/2019 17:08

I loved this and really hope there is many more seasons. I picked up on the Adam thing in episode one, but doubted myself a bit as it went on, though it did become more obvious again at the end.

I thought Emma Mackey as Maeve really shone through, and I am excited to watch her career grow.

Nothisispatrick · 23/01/2019 19:51

We’ve just started and I feel really confused, finding it too hard to get past the weirdness with the mix of present day and 1970s. Plus it’s just so unbritish. If they want to appeal to the US just set it in the US.

Jinxsy · 24/01/2019 19:23

Love, love, loved it.

Best comedy drama I've binged since Fleabag. Best thing I've watched since Killing Eve. It's puerile and ridiculous but exactly the antidote/decompression I need at the end of a day.

I also wish I could carry off Eric's outfits. He's a Don.

Afonavon · 24/01/2019 20:40

I liked it, but hated the weird clash of UK/US. The school cheering on the swimmer as if it were US American Football. Hated all of that despite being American living in UK myself.

curlyrebel · 27/01/2019 21:18

Totally agree about how weird it is the American type school in a UK setting...It probably will appeal to a lot of UK and US teenagers. I am enjoying it so far though. Good characters you can empathise with and I do love Gillian Anderson! The girl who plays Maeve is great too.

Whisky2014 · 31/01/2019 14:15

I enjoyed it

DaisyDreaming · 15/02/2019 01:02

I really enjoyed it but was confused about the uk/American thing and thought I was going mad wondering what country it was set in and wondered if uk schools have changed that much since my day!

bakingdemon · 23/02/2019 04:24

If it was really a Welsh school, it would be the captain of the rugby team who would be the school jock and all round crush. Much more scope for entertainment - and homoerotic fumblings - too!

dairymilkmonster · 25/02/2019 21:02

Genius.
Gillian anderson is a talented, beautiful woman.

Tortadellanonna · 27/02/2019 09:18

I really like that it’s got its own style. Some of the scenes are beautifully shot too. I think the actors had to look a bit older given the subject matter.
